Vertex is even hiring during a time when most companies are struggling to re-enter the job market. The company now employs nearly 1,800 workers, 25 percent more than at the beginning of last year. They currently have 150 open jobs and plan to add 500 more.
"It's just a golden era right now for this company," said Matthew Emmens, 59, seen here, who took over as the chief executive and chairman of Vertex after Boger retired in 2008. He has added more than 200 people for Vertex's fledgling commercial team. "Some of the best researchers in the world are here (at Vertex), and we're building a commercial presence."
