Controversial tax breaks for Mass. projects
Somerset Self Storage
Tax breaks: Potentially $50,000 in state taxes, plus $13,500 in local tax breaks
Somerset Self Storage received a tax break to open a self-storage center in a run-down building once used as a department store. The state approved the package in 2008, even though the company had already completed the project and opened the business eight months earlier. The company, which has two full-time employees, received a five-year break on its property taxes. It also qualified for state tax credits potentially worth $50,000 based on its plans to invest $1 million in the property.
