Taco Liberty Bell
Taco Bell, 1996
Taco Bell took out ads in a handful of major newspapers, saying the company had purchased the Liberty Bell to help reduce the national debt, according to the Museum of Hoaxes. The company said the bell would split its time between Philadelphia and Taco Bell headquarters in Irvine, Calif.
Taco Bell admitted to the hoax later that day, but not before White House press secretary Mike McCurry got in on the joke. McCurry told reporters the Lincoln Memorial had been sold as well, and would henceforth be called the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.
