Missoni and Target
Target underestimated how much online demand there would be for high-end designer Missoni's cheap and chic new line in September. So when customers bombarded the site, it bottlenecked and dramatically failed.
"It's totally embarrassing," Jim Cain, a Canadian-based Web analyst, told the Globe at the time. "It was just a badly done deployment. Normally, this doesn't happen with the really big companies. The site being down for that many hours must have cost them a lot of money. That's millions and millions of dollars."
