7. Sales tax on alcohol repealed
When Massachusetts officials approved a sales tax hike last year - from 5 percent to 6.25 percent - the measure also made alcohol subject to the sales tax, which increased the sales tax on alcohol from 0 to 6.25 percent.
However, the inclusion of alcohol in the sales tax hike proved to be unpopular with consumers, who voted to repeal the sales tax on alcohol in the November elections. The repeal effort was also helped by a huge marketing blitz by a committee that was supported primarily by the alcohol industry, which spent more than $2 million advertising for the repeal.
