3. Fallout from Madoff's Ponzi scheme
Bernard Madoff is serving a 150-year prison term, but the legal and financial fallout from his $50 billion Ponzi scheme continues. In February, a New York judge dismissed criminal fraud charges against Boston broker Robert Jaffe, who funneled clients to Madoff. Jaffe later agreed to settle a charge of recklessness brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission. This month, investor and philanthropist Carl Shapiro (pictured, with his wife Ruth) agreed to return $625 million received from Madoff to help repay other Ponzi victims.
