With the cold and snowy winter season weíve had, it can be challenging to stay positive and cheerful. Fear not though, as spring is just around the corner. Just as we tend to look at January as a time for a new beginning and setting goals and plans, set goals now for spring Ė itís time to recharge!
The following are some things you can do to get into a positive spring mindset:
Stay positive, think happy thoughts, and do spring-like things
Start thinking about the warm weather, green grass, and flowers blooming. Yes - that's really coming soon! Plant some vegetable or flower seeds in a pot, put them in your kitchen window, and watch them grow, knowing you will be planting them outside soon! My husband and kids recently did this, and it is a great reminder for them.
Research spring or summer vacation possibilities, book a vacation, and view your planned destination on a daily basis to build and maintain excitement. That alone can be motivating!
Set goals and implement them
Have you been mismanaging your time? Have you been wanting to organize your house or office and haven't yet? Are you not spending the time you had hoped on a specific task such as client development or building new relationships? Maybe you set New Year's resolutions and they fell off your radar screen. Donít worry about what you havenít been doing. Think about what you can do now and move forward.
Take the time now to set personal and professional goals Ė it's important to have both. Write out your goals and a plan of action, review them every day, evaluate your progress every week, and keep moving forward. This will hold you accountable and keep you on track.
Anthony Robbins, a leader in the science of peak performance, in his book Awaken the Giant Within , states
"If you don't set a baseline standard for what you'll accept in your life, you'll find it's easy to slip into behaviors and attitudes or a quality of life that's far below what you deserve. You need to set and live by these standards no matter what happens in your life."
Research new things you have always wanted to try and try them
Maybe you've always wanted to do yoga, Pilates, boxing, or Zumba but donít know what it will be like. Perhaps you've always wondered if you would like sushi or an ethnic food you havenít tried. Maybe you've always wanted to try driving on a race track or take an art class. Get out of your comfort zone and make plans to try new things! You will never know what something is like if you donít try it and could be missing out on something you might really enjoy.
Determine what new healthy habits you can start and implement them now
Start a new fitness and healthy eating routine. It can be as easy as starting to take walks to taking a fitness class once a week. Perhaps you make a switch from a bagel to fruit every day. Make the commitment to yourself, get in a routine, and build momentum. You donít have to commit to something not manageable. Start small and you can always increase the amount of activity or focus on something. Physical activity and healthy eating is a great mood booster and energizer.
Plan to learn a new skill or enhance a current one
We can't be an expert at everything! Some people would like to get better at public speaking. Others would like to enhance their networking skills. Maybe you could build on your management or leadership skills. There's many ways to accomplish this from hiring a personal coach to participating in a workshop or attending a seminar.
Another way to build on skills is to volunteer your time and get involved. Find a non-profit organization or professional association that has a mission you are passionate about, get involved, and join a committee. That will help build public speaking, networking, leadership, and people skills and is truly rewarding.
With the start of Daylight Savings Time it's now time for you to empower yourself and change your mindset to the positive, implement good habits, try new things, and move forward!
