Another installment in our ongoing series to help innovative MassChallenge companies get the word out about what they offer and get connected with what they need to thrive.
How did Ubiqi Health get started?
Prior to founding Ubiqi Health, CEO Jacqueline Thong worked in the clinical research field implementing hand-held patient data collection systems for pharmaceutical phase II and III studies. Through that experience, she saw how patients seemed to gain more control over their conditions by regularly reporting their symptoms. Even more interesting was that some patients asked if they could have access to the summary reports that were provided to their physicians. Unfortunately, in a controlled clinical trial setting, Jacqueline and her colleagues were unable to oblige with this request, but that got her thinking about how patient self-reporting tools could be adapted for a consumer market to help people manage their chronic conditions.
While doing her MBA at INSEAD in France a few years ago, Jacqueline further researched the idea and sketched out a business plan. While at school, she met one of her co-founders, designer William Tang, and soon after, met Anshuman Sharma, who drives the product development efforts.
As a starting point, the team wanted to test the idea out by focusing on a particular condition, and started by addressing those with migraines. The first version of that application was launched publicly about 20 months ago, and so far Ubiqi has seen that their platform has been able to improve the health or care of approximately 60% of their users.
What does Ubiqi Health do?
Ubiqi Health is a mobile-enabled personal discovery platform that serves the millions with chronic conditions like migraines, asthma, or diabetes. By combining an engaging data-gathering framework manifested through mobile applications and a sophisticated data aggregation engine, Ubiqi Health empowers people to do their own investigations to identify which treatments or lifestyle changes positively impact their health. The platform makes it easy for people to drive their own personal experiments by guiding them through the scientific process.
Through the data amassed through users, the Ubiqi Health platform also creates a store of clinical evidence that is leveraged by healthcare organizations to ensure that people are getting the most appropriate treatment for their individual needs.
