NRC approves new 20-year license for Pilgrim
BOSTON—The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has voted to renew the license of the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth for another 20 years.
The agency announced Friday that it has authorized staff to renew the license before it expires on June 8.
The five-member NRC voted 3-1 in favor of relicensing, with outgoing chairman Gregory Jaczko (YAHTS'-koh) the lone dissenting vote.
Commissioner George Apostolakis did not vote, according to NRC records.
John Herron, president and CEO of Pilgrim's owner, Entergy Nuclear, said the NRC's decision will ensure that the plant can continue to generate "safe, clean, reliable and low-cost energy."
Attorney General Martha Coakley had sought additional hearings, citing unaddressed safety concerns about the facility.
