Venture capital funds raised $5.5 billion in fresh capital in the third quarter, 78 percent more than in the prior quarter, prompting a warning by the head of the industry's national trade group that too much money in the system could water down returns and lead to the kind of excesses that sparked the last boom-bust cycle.
