Your reference may be underwhelming
Before you list someone as a reference, pause, contemplate carefully and do a sanity check. How will these people come across?
You may believe a former manager thinks youre a star, but in reality he or she could think your performance is lacking and feels compelled to share his or her views with your potential employers. On the other hand, you may have a reference that can give a rave review, but his or her quiet voice, slow speech and unenthusiastic manner may give the caller the impression that he or she was unimpressed or uninspired by your work.
