Westborough reaches agreement with teachers

The Westborough School Committee and the Westborough Teachers Association reached an agreement in their year-long contract talks on Monday night.

The settlement would give teachers a one percent retroactive pay hike for the past school year, when they worked without a contract, and another half-percent increase on June 30. For each of the next two school years, teachers would receive three percent salary increases.

Under union rules, the teachers can't officially accept the contract immediately. Teachers need to wait 10 school days from when the proposed contract is presented to them before they can hold a vote, said union President Bonnie Ross. Town Meeting also has to approve the contract in October.

Because the last day of school for teachers is Tuesday, June 17, they don't have a sufficient amount of days under the union constitution to hold a vote. That means they will have to wait until the beginning of the next school year in September before being able to accept the settlement.

Town officials and union representatives said the settlement was a compromise between the two sides' positions. "I think it's a very fair contract for everyone involved, for teachers, for citizens of Westborough, for everyone" said School Committee Chair Craig Harris.

On Tuesday, the union held a general meeting to discuss the settlement. Ross said members had a few questions about details, but on the whole welcomed the proposed agreement. "I thought it was a positive meeting," said Ross.
