Their perfect season thus far has been defined by unselfish and determined play, strong senior leadership and dogged defense. Tonight, the Bentley men's basketball team wraps up its regular season in Worcester, taking on Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption shooting for its 26th straight victory.
In the teams' first meeting on Dec. 2, Bentley rallied in the second half for a 72-65 victory in Waltham.
If the Falcons (25-0) complete the regular season unbeaten, it would tie the longest winning streak in school and New England Division 2 history, set 35 years ago. Ironically, that run of 26 consecutive wins was snapped by Assumption at Laska Gym, 109-103, in the NCAA regional. Bentley, ranked second nationally in Division 2, is one of only two remaining unbeaten men's college basketball teams.
Assumption, which will be playing just its third home game in its last 10 games, is 11-15 overall. After tonight's game, Bentley will be off until hosting a NE-10 quarterfinal game on Monday night.
Also on tap:
* The unbeaten Westborough High girls' basketball team (18-0) shoots for its 19th straight win, hosting St. Bernard's in the first round of the Westborough Invitational.
* In a pair of sectional wrestling dual meet semifinals, Watertown hosts Weston (Division 3 Central) while Natick welcomes in Reading (Division 2 Metro), both with 7 p.m. starts.
