Newton drops to fourth-safest city

Newton, the tony suburb just west of Boston, has been knocked off its pedestal as the safest municipality in America by a little city on the Jersey Shore.

The city of 80,000 people, which had held the title for two straight years, fell to fourth place in annual rankings released today by the Morgan Quitno Press, a private research firm in Lawrence, Kan., that specializes in national comparisons. America's new safest city is Brick, a New Jersey city 20 miles south of Asbury Park.
