Ever wonder what would happen if the creek really did rise? You can find out through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the city.
FEMA maps show whether a given property is in a zone that is likely or unlikely to flood in a 100-year-storm event. The agency has a website that allows you to find out what your level of flood risk is. (Let's hope they're better at predicting floods than responding to them.)
Construction in Newton, meanwhile, is governed by the city floodplain map, which is different from the FEMA map. Both Newton and FEMA maps are available for viewing at City Hall in the Engineering and Inspectional Services departments.
