A site (plan) to behold

Tuesday night's pivotal vote on the proposed site plan for the new Newton North High School ended with a resounding victory for the plan's backers.

Supporters of the current site design, which has been hit by some critics as too expensive and unnecessarily complex, won votes on both the approval of the site plan and the authorization of $1.1 million dollars to hire a construction manager. Opponents had conceded that they probably didn't have the votes to block the site plan, but they had been able to hold up the money for further work on the project over the last two months.

The votes clear the way for the project to move forward into the building design phase. Some Newton North neighbors and fiscal conservatives in the city are now talking about trying to put the project to a citywide referendum.
