Open space or Astroturf?


The Community Preservation Act -- you may have heard of it.

It’s the law that allows towns to raise money through a property tax surcharge to pay for open space protection, affordable housing and historic preservation.

It also allows spending on recreation space. But that’s where things are getting controversial in some towns.

Because those towns want to use this “community preservation” money to cover playing fields with the latest in high-tech artificial turf.

Is that what voters had in mind when they passed the law?
