Kicking it

Local soccer fans dispirited by the poor US showing in the World Cup -- our lads didn't win a game and one of their two goals of the tournament was actually scored by the other team -- may find some solace in the performances of three Newton Girls Soccer teams at the recent state tournament.

The under-18 "Newton Magic" squad capped an undefeated season by beating Nashoba Valley United 2-1 to take the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions trophy.

The under-12 "Newton Lightning" side, meanwhile, won four straight tournament games and made it to the finals before falling to Shrewsbury, 3-nil. [We have to say nil instead of zero. It's a soccer thing.]

Even the under-16 "Newton Renegades" squad outdid Claudio Reyna and Co., going 1-1-1 before bowing out in the semifinal round.
