David J. Israel of Newton, founder of the Trouvailles furniture stores, has died. He was 81.
Mr. Israel realized the best antiques are too pricey even for many affluent people, so he had the idea of making reproductions and selling them for a fraction of the originals' cost, the Globe reports today in an obituary.
The Watertown business, which grew to include showrooms across the country and in Europe, allowed him to "satisfy his passions about art and achitecture," said his daughter, Susan, of Newton. She also remembered him as a "highly intellectual, voracious reader" who was "curious about the big wide world."
