1,100 Local Riders Prepare for Pan-Mass Challenge

More than 1,100 bike riders from the western suburbs are registered to participate in the upcoming Pan-Massachusetts Challenge to fight cancer Aug. 5 and 6.

The Globe West region is home to an estimated 25 percent of the total participants in the 192-mile bike-a-thon, organizers said. The ride winds between Wellesley, Sturbridge, Bourne and Provincetown, and can last for one or two days.

The 26-year-old race, the most successful athletic fundraiser in the country, aims to raise $24 million this year for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund.
