After a wonderful evening at a Red Sox vs. Indians game, my sister and I boarded a train filled with fans. As we pulled away, a man sang, “There she was just a walkin’ down the street,” and the rest of the riders chimed in. We sang until no one could remember the words, then other songs were started -- notably “American Pie,” and the Oscar Mayer Wiener song. A newcomer to the area, I’d been warned by my supervisor at work that “people in Boston aren’t as nice as they are in Ohio.” I want to thank our train’s song leader for an unforgettable end to our night -- and for proving my supervisor wrong.

. . . and the Song One day this rainy summer, my 5-year-old daughter was getting too close to a puddle, fascinated by it. I said, “Lara, get away from that water. It’s dirty.” She turned to me confused and said, “But Mommy, I thought you loved that dirty water.”
