Is the season a failure if the Celtics don't win it all?
No. We built a legitimate contender for the next three to five years. We think. And building a contender is the first step, and then it takes luck to take it all the way. But being in genuine contention is a good definition of success.
That's your definition. But we're spoiled. What do you think the people of Boston will say if you don't go all the way?
Our goal on the court is to try and hang banner 17. Unless and until that happens, we're going to keep feeling like a job is undone.
A pressing question on the Celtics dancers. They're kind of skanky. Now that you're winning, can we get rid of them?
We'd be very superstitious about making changes during the season. We're trying to strike a balance between the NBA brand of entertainment and Boston's history and culture and values. So we're trying to get really athletic women who know how to dance and also happen to look good. Most of our season ticket holders are very happy with them.
You're a huge music fan, and a drummer. Keith Moon or Neil Peart?
I'm a Keith Moon guy. Neil is technically more skilled, but there'll never be another Keith Moon.
Now for celebrity drummers. You or Doug Flutie?
I'm just trying to keep time. Doug Flutie's a hell of a drummer.
Knicks owner James Dolan has a band. Whose is better?
Well, our team is better. I'll leave it at that.
That green pin-striped suit, which you once called one of the "ugliest" in Boston - tell me about it.
I bought it in Florence, Italy. I thought it was a lucky suit, and then I wore it to the lottery [last May], and we got the fifth pick, and I said, "Where is the luck?" But it turns out it was lucky. If we had gotten the first or second pick, we wouldn't have traded and gotten [Kevin] Garnett or [Ray] Allen.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is probably the best-known owner in the NBA. He's also a super big mouth. How do you feel about him?
He went out of his way to make me feel welcome in this league. He came up at an early game in this league and said, "Anything I can do to help." He's made sure every fan felt appreciated and every sponsor is thanked. If you're a Mavs fan, you can get to Mark, and he'll answer your question. I try to do the same thing. I try to answer every single e-mail.
Can we give out your e-mail address?
