To quote Kool Keith of the Ultramagnetic MC's (old-skool readers know what I'm talking about), "I’m back — back to smack attack."

Back for a week, anyway, filling in for the talented Brainiac blogger-columnist Josh Rothman, who — like too many Ideas staffers and writers before him — has departed for a New York media gig.

Blogging for the Ideas section back in 2006–08 was a lot of fun. I explored my interest in, among many other phenomena, comics and text-based forms of literature ("We are Iron Man!," the New Skrullicism, hookers in classic novels), memes (The dark side of Scrabble, "Keeping my baby", smart unapproachable girls in Boston rock), graphic design, and science fiction (non-human-caused global warming, Mitt Romney's appreciation of Battlefield Earth). And early on, when the Mooninite scare of January 31, 2007 happened in Boston, I was able to scoop the Boston Globe — thus making Brainiac a footnote to the sorry and embarrassing local history of post-9/11 hysteria. (Poor Star Simpson!)

This week, I'll do exactly what I used to do in the early days of this blog — take note of whatever it is that happens to interest me, and hope that it interests Brainiac's readers!

I probably won't actually smack attack... sorry for raising your hopes.
