A new helmet design for the Patriots?

Ken Carbone, a graphic designer and blogger for Fast Company, has pronounced the look of the New England Patriots' helmets the bottom of the barrel in a league teeming with bad design work. And he's not just criticizing: he's devised a replacement.

In general, Carbone writes, NFL helmet design is in a rut, "usually involving slapping the team's primary logo on both sides." This works when there's a certain logic to the approach, he thinks, as with the St. Louis Rams (two ram horns) or Philadelphia Eagles (wings).

But when teams like the Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers stamp their "visually complicated logos" on the side of their headgear, he writes, the result is "a graphic mess when televised and, I imagine, even if you're sitting on the fifty-yard line."

"At the very the bottom of the list are the New England Patriots. The Patriots' helmet is plastered with their logo, which comes dangerously close to looking like a wind-swept John Kerry dressed up like a Minute Man."

The ugliest helmet in the NFL?

There has been an upwelling of nostalgia for the Patriots' old helmet insignia this year, provoked by seeing the team play in its "throwback," AFL uniform. But Carbone goes in a different direction, bypassing the dual-logo approach in order to use the entire helmet to make a single statement (as the Cincinnati Bengals do with their tiger stripes).

"A team as legendary as the New England Patriots deserves a more celebratory helmet," he writes. His mock-up includes bold red and white stripes running front-to-back on the top of the helmet; on the sides, bright white stars stand out against a blue background.

A possible replacement?

UPDATE: Lots of Evel Knievel references in the comments.

UPDATE 2: And "Easy Rider."

UPDATE 3: Okay, the new Patriots design is bombing. What about the proposals for the Redskins and Buccaneers (scroll down)?

  1. Then they can employ Peter Fonda to motor through the endzone in full Easy Rider regalia after every touchdown.

  1. Not sure how, but he came up with one worse than the flying Elvis.
    Bring Pat back !

Looks like a 1970s rollerderby helmet.

  1. Hell NO!

Posted by PatriotsFan November 19, 09 03:00 PM
  1. It looks like something from Easy Rider. Not sure if it works. WHy not go back to the numbers underneath the Revolutionary War hat and go with tan pants/navy shirts a la Notre Dame? Try to mimick what the actual soldiers would have worn. This is too cheesy of a logo. Too polarizing with the design.

  1. Are they kidding? The helmet they designed looks like a bad throwback helmet. Hideous!

  1. Lame. It looks like something Evil Knievel would wear.

Posted by Jmoney November 19, 09 03:03 PM
  1. No. No. NO! He says the current helmet is ugly and he comes up, with that abomination, to replace it? His design proposal is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. The Patriots play football; they don't jump their Sky Cycle over Snake River Canyon.

  1. The proposed replacement helmet is U-G-L-Y!
Look's like something a third grader would draw.
Patriots ranked 6th in 2008-09 in merchandise sales so I dont know what this guy is talking about. Get a job!

Posted by Sean November 19, 09 03:05 PM
  1. OK I'm all prepared to entertain replacements, but -- that's just silly. Did he steal that from Evel Kenieval? Did he actually put time and effort into that?

Posted by Jeffski November 19, 09 03:05 PM
  1. Stars and stripes look OK, but we need to see the PATRIOT emblem somewhere on there.

  1. That's as ugly as SIN itself!

  1. Would this be in honor of Evel Knievel?

Posted by john November 19, 09 03:17 PM
  1. The "Flying Elvis" design DOES NOT look like John Kerry... not even close. YOUR design on the other hand looks like something Evil Kenieval wouldn't even be buried in.

    Posted by DI$CO November 19, 09 03:17 PM
  1. Suggestion: Use the Old Pat the Patriot Helmet logo on the side of our new Helmet. But update the colors to the Silver, Darker blue, and red we use now. So i would suggest to use the same color scheme we have now but instead of flying Elvis, use Pat the Patriot w/ updated colors
Silver Helmet, Red Face Mask, Pat The Patriot on the sides w/ updated colors

    Posted by Pat P November 19, 09 03:17 PM
  1. As Much as i would love to see Pat the Patriot return they have won 3 Super bowls with this logo they won't change it.......maybe wear Pat the Patriot and the red uniforms once a year at home

    Posted by jomot3 November 19, 09 03:18 PM

  1. Before we go changing anything we should have a vote.
Let the fans vote on the change at one of the home games just like
they did the last time the helmets were changed.I know because i was
    at the game.

    Posted by RMS,Foxborough Ma November 19, 09 03:21 PM
  1. Patriots? Looks more like a league of Evel Knievels if they wore these.

Nice try but maybe a but too simplified.

I actually like the wind-swept face look of the current. It is a major improvement from the cartoonish full bodied guy they originally had. It's modern, angular and graphicaly simple. No need to improve for a good long time.

Posted by Andy November 19, 09 03:21 PM
  1. Fail.

Posted by Jimbo November 19, 09 03:21 PM
  1. Either this article is a Spoof, or Mr. Carbone is mentally unfit. Loved it on Peter Fonda, and the almighty Evel Kenievel. On the Pats??? uhhh, not so much...

    Posted by dgk666 November 19, 09 03:21 PM
  1. Keep it just the way it is. That new design is horrible & the old Pat the Patriot reminds me of the bad old days.

Posted by Kris November 19, 09 03:23 PM
  1. Looks like something Wonder Woman would wear.

Posted by sam November 19, 09 03:23 PM
  1. I think we need to change the helmet design completely, and take some notes from the hockey helmets now-a-days.

    That thing is SICK!

Posted by Mike November 19, 09 03:24 PM
  1. The "new" design looks like a bad Captain Dave Osborn helmet! I say no to the stuntman style!

Posted by Darsen November 19, 09 03:35 PM
  1. Do you honestly think football fans care if helmet designs are in a "rut"? Can you picture a Pats fan with a beer in his hand saying "the Pats really need a more "celebratory" helmet". Are you for real? Keep your "trendy" ideas out of sports. Maybe you should grow a pair before your next attempt.

Posted by JB November 19, 09 03:39 PM

  1. how about a silver helmet (Paul Revere was a silversmith) with the old Pat Patriot on it- no stripes-get rid of any red shirts from here on out - The British wore red, what was Billy Sullivan thinking?

Posted by Needs November 19, 09 03:48 PM
  1. I like the work he did on the Tampa and Redskins helmets. Stars and stripes are meant for the flag though.

  1. Imagine the scene when the Patriots play the Jets IN NEW YORK wearing those ugly things. The laughter will be so loud you'll hear the Jets fans guffawing all the way to Connecticut. That design is so ugly we need a new word for it. Better yet... just capitalize the letter U and pronounce it "Yoo Glee."

  1. This designer is nuts. Some of the best helmets are simple. This one is hideous!

Posted by Mike November 19, 09 04:51 PM
  1. Horrible! Though I understand where he's headed with a universal type of look that stands the test of time. One other point ....it indirectly infinges on the Dallas Cowboy design.

My opinion. Let the original (flying Elvis) stand as is and it will soon stand the test of time. The original Pat Patriot simply is retired for good. They don't look as fierce as they do with the current uniforms.

Posted by schwank November 19, 09 04:53 PM
  1. Nooooooooo!!! It reminds me of some lame super hero or an awful wrestlers costume. The current helmet is fine. The throwback uniforms look good too.

  1. That has to be the WORST mock-up for a pro football helmet I've ever seen. How is this even news? Has this individual been contracted to design something for the Patriots? How much is this Carbone fellow paying the Globe to publish an advertisement for his company? Frankly, I think the Bengals helmet has to be one of the WORST in the NFL. What a waste of newsprint.

Posted by Brian November 19, 09 05:31 PM

Another slow day at the Globe...

  1. Leave it to New Englanders to always like the past more than the present. "That's the way it was and we liked it! We loved it!!"

Evil Kinevel silliness aside, a grittier version of Elvis would be cool. Pat is awesome but lets keep him in the past.

  1. I noticed a lot of people like our current color scheme but want to ditch "Elvis" for "Pat Patriot". I couldn't agree more. Pat Patriot is a classic logo. I know it was the only logo to feature a full human (instead of just a head) and I believe it was the only logo to feature a football.

Really hope they put Elvis on waivers and bring in Pat Patriot. Keep the color scheme and everything else as is.

I think if you took the idea and made it look more "millenial" it might be better.... I still like Pat Patriot the best, the most original idea/logo ever put on a helmet.

  1. OK, Elvis Patriot may not be perfect, but I would be willing to stick with it. I don't understand what it is with this town's obsession to hold on to old things. Pat Patriot to me signifies the bad old days of the Patsies of the 70's and 80's. Every time they wear that old uniform, I almost expect to see Tony Eason and Zeke Mowatt come running out of the tunnel and to look up to the owners box and see Billy and Pat Sullivan, or even Victor Kiam sitting up there instead of the Krafts.

Come to think of it, this redesigned helmet would have been perfect for those old teams. Those old Patriot teams were basically the NFL equivalent of Evel Knievel's jump over the fountains at Caesars Palace.

  1. KBOSR22, EXACTLY. I will never understand New England's obsession with Pat Patriot, a logo that symbolizes decades of futility and failure. The Flying Elvis may not exactly be high art, but it's a logo that is instantly associated with success.

I think the proposed design is way too busy and does have too many references to Easy Rider and Evil Knievel. I think you should hire Apple to come up with a design seeing that they're the best at creating effective and memorable Iconic logos and designs.

I envision my old wonderful aunt Patsy with her beaming smile, bun of shimmering grey hair, and flowered house coat shuffling through the kitchen with apple pie in hand..............not what I want to think of when it comes to our dominating hero’s of the grid iron. Focus should be on the game and not so much the design. I'm all for change, but I think a much more minimalist approach. That goes for Redskins and Browns as well.

Keep the silver pants and blue jerseys (white jerseys and blue pants) like they have now. include the 'FLying Elvi' logo on the shoulder patches and as a possible thigh patch. But instead of the Elvis logo on the helmet, change the helmet to Pat Patriot. Keep the Helmet the way it is, but put the old MEAN Pat Patriot on the Helmet. No red/white strips down the middle, just the old Pats Logo on the helmet sides, silver helmet base and red facemask.

Carbone did do a nice makeover of Tampa Bay's helmet, but that Redskins redesign is almost as bad as what he thought up for the Patriots.

When the NFL announced the throwback AFL jerseys for this year, I first thought that were would get to see the original Pats uniforms-- helmets with the tricolor cap and a number on them-- instead of Pat Patriot again. I would love to see the Pats dust off the real original AFL uniforms for at least one game.

  1. The Bucs design is not only good, its obvious. Looking at it, I can't figure out why its not the design except that someone might have felt it read too scary. The Redskins design is inspired. I actually prefer the Redskins throwback helmets by a wide margin over their current look, but this evokes some of the best features of the Eagles/Rams/Vikings helmets he cites.

But man, did he ever miss on the Pats. I'm not saying the current helmet is great, but he tossed the color scheme aside because it didn't work with his concept and that concept looks more more suited to the USFL if the USFL was founded in the early 70's.

  1. The original Patriots helmet with the white throwback uniform is arguably the classiest uni in the NFL. However, it is the Flying Elvis version that inspires the most confidence among the fans. The Pats have won 3 Super bowls wearing the Flying Elvis. (I get nervous when I see the pats play in the red jersey throwback unis.)

  1. The Pats helmet looks like it would be a gimmicky alternative helmet. I wouldn't mind seeing it once for Veterans day or something.

The Redskins is the best new design, replacing the logo with a cool design like the Eagles or Vikings. The Bucs helmet is cooler but it really just recreates the logo and nothing else.

  1. "In a rut"? There's no deeper rut than "slapping" the stars and stripes on something. This guy has the imagination of a newt. The current helmet shows a helluva lot more imagination and creativity than his abomination. Moreover, it "fits" with the current jerseys and pants. Imagine his helmet with the current uniform >GAG

The designer, Ken Carbone is supposed to be some big shot graphic designer, but this is not design at work. It's terribly executed and seems more like blind, wannabe, amateur crap. I actually find this Pats remake offensive and a mockery of American pride.

Or move the team to Las Vegas. They'd get run out of town with that helmet.

Posted by catchrick November 21, 09 10:43 AM
  1. A laughably poor replacement mock-up. If the current design is a "graphic mess" what would anyone be able to make out of stars of various sizes? Surely, it is even more untidy.
There are reasons why NFL helmets have their logos "slapped" on their sides: design continuity, marketability and brand recognition. I presume Mr. Carbone has some new logos in mind to go with these helmets. I would like to see them, I need a few laughs lately.
It's worth noting that football fans are emotionally invested in their favorite team. And the helmet itself plays a strong part in that emotion as so many have commented here. Their emotional link transcends the simple aesthetics.

  1. Oh Ken Carbone has pronounced the current Patriots helmet to be the bottom of the barrel! Well that makes all the difference in the world. Who on Earth is Ken Carbone and who proclaimed him to be the final arbiter on what looks good and what doesn't. Matter of fact, the helmet that he thinks is the best, the Bengals, I have always considered to be the ugliest helmet in the league.
I hope the Patriots are not even considering giving this guy the light of day with this ridiculous looking design. Let him go and design stupid looking uniforms for the new UFL. They could change the leagues' name from United Football League to Ugly Football Logos.

Posted by honestrick November 22, 09 08:04 AM
  1. The current helmet is genius. It's Elvis, Stars and Stripes and it has an attitude. This is pure Americana and the best helmet design in the NFL.

Posted by Ted November 22, 09 08:07 AM
  1. As a designer myself, I can see that this Carbone guy skipped marketing 101. Icons and logos sell merchandise, and to try to market this helmet that looks like a bad 4th of july party dress would be a huge mistake. Maybe he should try to watch some football once in a while and get educated on how to sell a product.

  1. Just because something make your eyes bleed doesn't make it bad. Good design can be clean and simple. I love the newer Pats helmets. The Flying Elvis is the symbol of dynasty... which is why it was so important to switch from Pat the "two decades of losing" Logo. I'm not saying i don't like the idea of Americana in the uniform but are you kidding me. Does it come with a little red cape and a flair for the dramatic?

Posted by PatsDawg November 22, 09 09:13 AM
  1. Bring back "Pat Patriot" helmet & the classic uniforms (the ones from the eighties & not sixties). Too many teams have gone with the trendy look (stripes down the side of uniforms and/or flares designs) - not apealing at all. (trendy examples include Arizona, Denver, Buffalo, Seattle, & to a lesser degree - the Patriots) vs. (the classic look of Green Bay, Chicago, Pttsburgh, Cleveland - looks stand the test of time). Pats could switch between White, Red, & Blue uniforms. Flying elvis and corresponing uniforms are look fad-like. I applaud the Krafts for the success they've brought to the orgaization but they should not changed the uniforms.

Posted by Sal November 22, 09 09:56 AM
  1. Please bring back the classic uniforms (the ones from the eighties not the current sixties ones). Ditch the Flying elvis and dark blue uniform for classic look. This newly proposed helmet is joke - don't even think about it.

  1. If Brady were to wear this helmet, I GUARANTEE that Gisele will be filing for divorce soon after...

  1. I always loved "Pat Patriot." Bring that logo back, this time with royal blue jerseys, with red and white trim.

  1. Current helmets are AWESOME. Proposed design looks like a 6 year old did it. Skip it.

  1. I like the existing helmets. The proposed new design is hideous!

  1. we need to think about this before we get all up in arms, look if there will be new helmet it will not be this

  1. pat patriot or flying tri corner sans the elvis face. think about it.

Posted by cdeco November 24, 09 10:34 PM
  1. the patriots helmet looks fine the way it is...but the redskins and the bucs ones should be adopted right away !!

  1. I like the reasoning behind the helmet revolution proposed here.

But i dont like the Patriots helmet.

I honestly wouldnt want an NFL helmet to have the power of getting me head-shotted in Afghanistan.

And FYI: the Patriots wear NAVY blue... NOT light blue.

And i like the Elvis logo more than pat patriot, but thats just me.

  1. I like the new one so much better than the old one but the oldest one was the best ever and the Pats should switch back to the oldest one

Posted by mike November 25, 09 01:52 PM
  1. The suggested replacement design looks like a USFL nightmare.

Posted by Jerry November 25, 09 01:57 PM
  1. ken, you may be a graphic designer, but you don't know crap about marketing. Ever hear of branding?? We have a long team history, and changing logo every ten years hurts that and dilutes the brand.

Also, that new design is just bad. The flying Elvis may not be the best in the NFL, but it is a known, established, and RECOGNIZED logo, which is much more important than avoiding a "visually complicated" scene you get when two teams of clashing colors and logos play each other.

Posted by Erin November 25, 09 02:13 PM
  1. That thing is hideous.....Bring back Pat Patriot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Posted by Reggie S. November 25, 09 03:32 PM

the throw back pat & the current pat on the helmet too???

  1. Had the Patriots in 1776 worn that helmet, we'd be England right now!!!

Posted by Derek November 26, 09 01:46 AM
  1. I preferrrrrrrrrr Pat Patriot myself!!! Lets just use the throwbacks all the time

Posted by Lee November 26, 09 06:50 AM
  1. this looks like something worn by Captain America...

    Bring back Pat!

Posted by jdnkn November 26, 09 08:06 AM
  1. The proposed helmet is awful; stick with the flying elvis or Pat Patriot

Posted by Mike November 26, 09 08:10 AM
  1. The new design is awful. Three Super Bowls with the Flying Elvis, don't change it.

Posted by JIm November 26, 09 08:16 AM
  1. That is silly. The PATRIOTS Helmet is one of the BEST out in the NFL. These artsy fartsy guys are ridiculous some times.

Posted by George November 26, 09 09:10 AM
  1. Stay with what we have....the mock up is ugly!!!!

Posted by dk November 26, 09 10:41 AM
  1. are you joking me?? this is so ugly and so 60s!!!

Posted by liangj November 26, 09 12:02 PM
  1. Forgettabout it ! No to the old cartoonish Pat and Double No to the cannon clown helmet !! The windswept Elvis has grown on me..

Posted by Babalouie from Lakefield November 26, 09 06:54 PM
  1. WTF!!! Are you kidding me? That hekmet looks like something from a Japanese Scifi horror movie from the sixties!

Posted by Mario November 26, 09 07:57 PM
  1. It looks like the very bad motorcycle helmet and inaccurate uniform worn by Reb Brown when he played Captain America for the equally poor quality made-for-television movie in the late 1970's. In a word; Craptastic.

If the team had to change the helmet, I'd go back to the classic Pat the Patriot. But since this is the one that has seen virtually nothing but winning- don't hold your breath.

Posted by bleujayone November 26, 09 10:13 PM
  1. It looks like a USFL of College helmet.

Posted by Henry November 27, 09 12:11 PM
