Democracy lost one of its most thoughtful champions with the recent death of Vaclav Havel. The loss was particularly felt in Budapest, where the international university Havel helped found two decades ago is again on the front lines of a struggle over democracy. The year opened with alarming signs that democracy is eroding in Europe and the United States.
