Forget CGI: Nothing tugs Generation X heartstrings like puppets
The new installment of “The Muppet Movie’’ has captured parental buzz, less because of its hipster credentials than for its unabashed, unhip, analog roots. Who would thought a generation steeped in irony would so headily embrace a troupe of puppets? The Muppets were about intergenerational humor, distinct characters, and a sweet view of human nature that matched Jim Henson’s odd, nasally voice. Most pointedly, the Muppets capture something special about childhood: the way boundaries work as tools for creativity.
