YOUR AUG. 10 editorial “Three big-ticket developments would speed Boston’s recovery’’ celebrates bigness as a value for new development in Boston. One gets the impression from reading it that Dubai should serve as our model.

As a 35-year resident of the city, my vision would be quite different. I would play to the strengths of our great city: its walkability, compactness, and lively streetscape. These qualities, not the bigness of its buildings, are what make Boston so special to residents and, I might add, to tourists and conventioneers.
