Should we be cynical here? The Emmy producers certainly did, when they teased Sheen’s appearance during a commercial break. (The announcer purred something like, “You’ll never guess who’s presenting next!”) An upstanding, calm public Charlie Sheen appearance is a newsworthy thing, and Sheen does have an incentive to make news. He has tonight’s Comedy Central Roast to promote, and I imagine that the proceedings therein will not be classy in the least.
But since the TV industry is not known for kindness or contrition — and our culture, these days, is woefully short on both — I’m inclined to take some good-heartedness at face value. So, wow, thanks, Charlie. In the midst of a lackluster telecast, you really made my night.
