"I don't want to be someone's butler," Dave Becker tells me. The jovial Becker says that his new Wellesley restaurant will be as casual and welcoming as Needham's Sweet Basil. Expect new twists on Greek, Lebanese, Israeli, and eastern Mediterranean food, with his own special cubed cous cous recipe. "I'm not trying to follow two thousand years of history," he tells me. "I'm just borrowing flavor profiles." The unnamed restaurant will replace Milestone at 13 Central St., run by Charlie Papakonstantinou. His family will continue to run Wellesley's Maugus restaurant. (No hard feelings: "I'm delighted to pass the torch," Papakonstantinou says.)
Until March, Becker (who's also a potter) says he plans to keep busy making custom plates for chef Juan Pedrosa, the former sous chef at Trade. Pedrosa is opening a high-end restaurant, the Glenville Stops, in Allston.
The Improper notes that the restaurant has 100 seats and a full liquor license. Hat-tip to Eater, who noted that Shake Shack's Danny Meyer dined recently at Sweet Basil, for the heads up.
