Michael Schlow's Barrio Cantina has closed. The restaurant originally opened in 2012 as Happy's, a sort of upscale comfort food kitsch-en with a deli twist. He then turned it into Barrio, which served Mexican food.

"We're very sad to close Barrio. We want to thank all of our staff, our loyal guests, and our landlord. We're disappointed to be in this position, as we love being a part of the exciting, emerging Fenway neighborhood. We still believe whole-heartedly in the location, but obviously we were unable to execute the right concept to drive enough business. We are confident that as this neighborhood continues to grow as a dining and shopping destination, that the next tenant will be a great success," Schlow said in a statement.

Meanwhile, he's busy opening a branch of Tico in Washington, D.C., and he says he'll "continue to focus on the growth of Alta Strada locally here in the Boston area."

His downtown flagship, Radius, closed in June 2013. (Fans of its famous burger can enjoy it for $8.99 at Via Matta this week and next during their Schlowburger pop-up.)
