Just in time for the flood of college students, Shanghai Social Club debuted over the weekend in Allston. The restaurant serves classic Chinese food with some daring twists courtesy Bob Botchie, who used to work at Myers + Chang.

The Improper previewed the menu a few weeks back. Highlights: cold Asian lobster rolls, lion’s head meatballs, and salt-and-pepper chicken skin buns. Wash 'em back with potent mai tais and scorpion bowls. (This is a college neighborhood, after all.)

The Niemitz Design Group, the artistes behind swanky spots like Clio, styled the restaurant in buddhas and gold — ensuring that boozing students won't rely on it solely for nocturnal egg roll binges. It actually looks downright date-worthy.
