One year ago, I set out on this long crazy journey, not knowing where it would go, but certainly having high hopes. things have gone amazingly - if hectic, but it's been a very rich experience that I will continue with as long as I can. Many thanks again to the photographers and supporters out there, you have all been very generous. If you are interested in a more personal take on the past year, I wrote about it in my personal blog (the first entry there since I started Big Picture last year - heh). If there's anything you'd like to see different in The Big Picture, or more of (or less of), feel free to let me know. And please, feel free to be critical - comments like "too many photos", "too sad" or "not enough celebrities" or "not enough kittens" are all welcome. Oh, and I do plan to revise the layout of BP Notes, this blog, soon. Going to make it go 990px wide, just like the regular site. I'm not happy with the compromise, so will figure out another method to have a linkblog sidebar.

My favorite part of The Big Picture, are the faces. News is relevant because fellow humans are involved. Keep up the good work, and keep showing the human side of all conflicts, achievements and memories.
Only compliments. Many thanks to you and all photographers.
Only compliments too. In this case, from Brasil.
Not any kittens at all, so not enough kittens. Or dogs for that matter...
One of my favorite blogs around, no question...
There are two sides to every photograph-- what is in front of the camera and what is behind the camera.
I feel what is behind the camera has not be sufficiently explored. Perhaps a single photographer and his photographs can be featured along with an interview or his comments on the event being photographed.
Again, compliments.
If you wish to put in some photos in a slightly better resolution, you don't have to hésitate...
Thanks from Paris, France.
I love the Big Picture -- and I find I'm often recommending it to others when the topic of the photos might be of interest -- from 4th graders studying astronomy to adults who care about a particular part of the world -- THANK you.
Thank you so much for having the Big Picture. I have been so inspired by what I see and have been so touched by the struggles of people all over the world. Each week I look forward to an entry because I know I'll learn something so much more valuable than what I could ever learn from a textbook. Thank you so much
Happy Anniversary!
I'm an RSS subscriber to both Big Picture and Big Picture Notes since they started. At first, I didn't like the spin off of BPNotes from the main BP site. I've since gotten used to it. Now - I'd be sad to see them joined back up.
I guess this is what happens when you solicit public advice - we all have opinions and none of them match.
Good luck, and I'll be here no matter how you choose to design this place.
Thank you, your website is a treasure!
First of all: I love The Big Picture, I even look at those series who wouldn't seem to interest me in the first place. And eventually, they do, most of the time.
One suggestion I'd have is a sort of classification of disturbing pictures. I totally agree with you that putting a black blanket over the picture and then showing it upon clicking into the black is a good idea, but I'd either appreciate a more clear classification of what is expecting me or a clearer description. If there is a body to be seen, in what state is that body? Is it a close-up or not? Things like that. I find most of the disturbing pictures okay to look at (because they are real and this is happening out there) but sometimes I wish that I hadn't clicked.
Other than that: Thumbs up!
congratulations on one of the most entertaining, thought provoching blogs keep up the good work every time my rss beeps i know i am going to see some wonderful images
ps i have the same suggestion,a bit more resolution so we can at least put some pictures on our desktops
thanks again

Excellent site, I really enjoy watching your point of view. The photos are amazing and make me think abut.
I find myself sending the link to family and friends
(Israel)
I really appreciate The Big Picture for bringing to my attention things that aren't covered in the "sound bite". Whether it be some forgotten conflict, a religious celebration, or repairing Hubble.
Please keep up the eclectic mix.
cheers
Dan
The Big Picture STILL the best blog after a year. THANK YOU.
Happy B-day Big Picture! Hope you a long anf joyful life!
I don't know what could I criticize... All the subjects are interesting, even if I sometimes have doubts BEFORE looking at the pics...
Anyway, your success can be measured by the new photo-blogs other newspapers have built since you started (WSJ, NYT...)
And as Dan says just up here, keep on eclectic matters!
Cheers,
Heimana
Hi,
first of all, congrats for your B-Day, and for the job that you are doing.
I follow all kind of motor sports, and wil be great more photos of differents kinds of motor sports, but i apreciate a lot your job showing differents themes in each entry.
Sorry for my bad english, regards from Barcelona, Spain.
read it as soon as i see it in my google reader. keep it going. keep it real. use it for the power of good - by keeping it real.
I love it, aside from the "too many photos" and the lack of kittens thing.
I'm afraid that my selfish concern when the Globe was in trouble was "What will happen to The Big Picture"? Happy birthday, I hope it continues for many years to come. Thanks for the work and the always excellent pictures, rb
You are doing GREAT! And that so many other papers and cites are copying your model in one measure or another speaks volumes!
Thanks and Keep up the Good (GREAT!) Work.
Your friends at www.nocaptionneeded.com
I'm always passing links to the Big Picture along to my friends. Thank you for your work. Thanks for covering stories that get little attention.
My only wish is that those in newspaper management would take the time to understand why this blog is successful. Congratulations on the anniversary and for obviously caring about your "product" so much. I tend to like the features that let me know about events that I had not heard of before (like the recent cheese wheel roll in England).
The site is great as it is. More photos is always nicer than less.
One thing I would really like though is for you to upload the photos with the exif intact.
I don't know if this is possible, but if it is I would really love it.
(photo geek here)
Congratulations to you and your team on completing one successful year.
Each visit to the Big Picture offers the pleasure to look at the photos and to reflect on the developped topic. A great visual and journalistic work!!!
Keep on goin'
No criticism - still by far one of my favorite ways to "read" the news. Very compelling, keep up the great work.
i like news in africa and i hope to see the wood world i mean the animals and every thing related to it .. thank u The Big Picture
Thanks for a great feature. The pictures are always amazing.
As always, brilliant photographs. Congratulations on one year of (easily) the best photo journalism on the internet.
However, I really wish The Big Picture images had their EXIF data intact - or at least a subset of the most important EXIF data shared. (Like Camera Model, Lens, Focal Length, Exposure bias and shutter speed)
This will not only give everyone a little insight into how these brilliant pictures are taken, but also strengthen the image of this website as one that embodies the spirit of sharing.
I think many of us would like a post about Michael Jackson right now.
Can't you collect pictures about michael jacksons sorrow around the world?
Would love to see them....Plz
Excellent work. At least once a week i find myself forwarding the link onto friends.
Irishman in NZ.
As a Geography teacher this is one of the best sources for EXCELLENT photographs.
Has anyone found any sites/blogs with anything even close to this quality? Please share if you know of others like this!
Thanks
What can I say, I love this site more than any other. I check it twice every day at least for an update. Please, do not ever stop. Some of us appreciate your work so much.
Great project! keep on spinning it further!
I dislike watching news on tv or listening to the radio as it is quite depressing everyday. however only in The Big Picture I find what I love: superb quality photos and short description. This helps me to be up to date and what is more important enjoy!
best of luck and many years!
1st year is a test 2nd year is full steady GO AHEAD!:)
Very few Globe readers have heard of The Big Picture, so it is important to get its very existence much better known.
Once, discovered, of course, the excellence speaks for itself.
Request: The BP Notes blog, if going full-screen width, should get split into 2-3 columns. High-resolution displays are more common all the time, resulting in wider screens and smaller text, so columns are needed to maintain legibility.
Absolutely fantastic...It seems like whenever there is something going on in the world that I want to know about you've covered it with AMAZING photographs. Brilliant work.
they were GREAT pictures I LOVED THEM I LOVE YOUR PICTURES AS BACKGROUND there are great
Would like to see more war and natural disaster pics. War War 2 & the Tsunami that killed 250,000 would be interesting.
Hope you are being compensated nicely for this. You deserve it.
Wow! The Big Picture blows my socks off with every story. The pictures are always fantastic. Each one takes me to a whole new world. Thank you.
I just can't stop watching you "The Big Picture" since a blogger linked it to his website. From that moment I loved photography and the beautiful way in which it can be used to tell the story. Thank you very much for your hard work.
My best RSS... Thanks a lot for all these pictures.
I love this blog because there is only pictures. No too many texts or a colorfull template.
Be simple.
Thank you.
Thanks a lot from Tel Aviv. Already sent the link to my many friends here in Israel and in Russia.
Truly stunning work! Marvelous! I don't know enough superlative to describe my love and appreciation for the work you do! No complaints! Thank you thank you thank you for publishing pictures that are daring and wondrous. You (and the great contributing photographers) have managed to capture the human condition, both great and tragic, in a narrative not easily attained.
Don't stop!!!
I love the pictures. I'm a "never send links to people" type of person, and yet I've sent links to different Big Picture sets numerous times. So far I think you've done an excellent job of mixing up lighter and darker subject matters. I hope that will continue - the muddy people and lunar eclipse pictures have their place - and the Afghanistan and ethnic clashes in Chinia pictures have their place too. Kudos to you.
I would also like to see the EXIF data. Shutter speed, camera model, lens, focal length, etc are all very helpful to gain some insight into these amazing pictures.
Thank you and Happy Anniversary! Keep up the good work!
From Thailand.
Thank you fot this amazing blog from Slovenia. I have it RSSed adn every time a new post lights up its like Christmas.
I read the comments here as well and yes the only thing "missing" is Metdata about the pictures. Images can be sometimes be confusing to everyday readers, who might think some images are manipulated (like tilt shift photos or croped fisheye photos). Also it would be interesting to se in some cases just what F and shutter setting the photographer used to achieve the shot. Keep up the GREAT work!

All the photographs are beyond fantastic, with just enough copy to appreciate what is being viewed. Top notch job - keep up the incredible work. My favorite site (thanks to my son who turned me on to it).
The Big Picture gives learning experience to all sorts of field photographers.its a way of learning eventshapping around world, knowing culture of others, happy or sad - in any other way .As a News Photographer i learn alot whats happing around world.some time i feel its not enough but thats human nature.CONGRATES and keep doing your KARMA, THANKS TO THE BIG PICTURE.......
This is definitely one of my favorite sites on the internet. I believe it is the best photojournalism site. I am awed, inspired, thankful, disgusted, teary-eyed, and laughing every two days. I would not change a thing. I do agree with #12 though, that if one thing can be improved, are the black overlay over disturbing pictures. Maybe a small summary of what we are going to find would be helpful. There have been a few times where I clicked it and it was no big deal, but other times, I would rather have not seen the image. So, I pretty much don't click on them anymore. THANK YOU SO MUCH, fantastic work!
