There are two sides to every photograph-- what is in front of the camera and what is behind the camera.

I feel what is behind the camera has not be sufficiently explored. Perhaps a single photographer and his photographs can be featured along with an interview or his comments on the event being photographed.

I'm an RSS subscriber to both Big Picture and Big Picture Notes since they started. At first, I didn't like the spin off of BPNotes from the main BP site. I've since gotten used to it. Now - I'd be sad to see them joined back up.

I guess this is what happens when you solicit public advice - we all have opinions and none of them match.

First of all: I love The Big Picture, I even look at those series who wouldn't seem to interest me in the first place. And eventually, they do, most of the time.

One suggestion I'd have is a sort of classification of disturbing pictures. I totally agree with you that putting a black blanket over the picture and then showing it upon clicking into the black is a good idea, but I'd either appreciate a more clear classification of what is expecting me or a clearer description. If there is a body to be seen, in what state is that body? Is it a close-up or not? Things like that. I find most of the disturbing pictures okay to look at (because they are real and this is happening out there) but sometimes I wish that I hadn't clicked.

Other than that: Thumbs up!

My only wish is that those in newspaper management would take the time to understand why this blog is successful. Congratulations on the anniversary and for obviously caring about your "product" so much. I tend to like the features that let me know about events that I had not heard of before (like the recent cheese wheel roll in England).

The site is great as it is. More photos is always nicer than less.
One thing I would really like though is for you to upload the photos with the exif intact.
I don't know if this is possible, but if it is I would really love it.

As always, brilliant photographs. Congratulations on one year of (easily) the best photo journalism on the internet.

However, I really wish The Big Picture images had their EXIF data intact - or at least a subset of the most important EXIF data shared. (Like Camera Model, Lens, Focal Length, Exposure bias and shutter speed)

This will not only give everyone a little insight into how these brilliant pictures are taken, but also strengthen the image of this website as one that embodies the spirit of sharing.

I think many of us would like a post about Michael Jackson right now.

Very few Globe readers have heard of The Big Picture, so it is important to get its very existence much better known.

Once, discovered, of course, the excellence speaks for itself.

Request: The BP Notes blog, if going full-screen width, should get split into 2-3 columns. High-resolution displays are more common all the time, resulting in wider screens and smaller text, so columns are needed to maintain legibility.

I love the pictures. I'm a "never send links to people" type of person, and yet I've sent links to different Big Picture sets numerous times. So far I think you've done an excellent job of mixing up lighter and darker subject matters. I hope that will continue - the muddy people and lunar eclipse pictures have their place - and the Afghanistan and ethnic clashes in Chinia pictures have their place too. Kudos to you.

I would also like to see the EXIF data. Shutter speed, camera model, lens, focal length, etc are all very helpful to gain some insight into these amazing pictures.

I read the comments here as well and yes the only thing "missing" is Metdata about the pictures. Images can be sometimes be confusing to everyday readers, who might think some images are manipulated (like tilt shift photos or croped fisheye photos). Also it would be interesting to se in some cases just what F and shutter setting the photographer used to achieve the shot. Keep up the GREAT work!

The Big Picture gives learning experience to all sorts of field photographers.its a way of learning eventshapping around world,knowing culture of others, happy or sad - in any other way .As a News Photographer i learn alot whats happing around world.some time i feel its not enough but thats human nature.CONGRATES and keep doing your KARMA, THANKS TO THE BIG PICTURE.......

This is definitely one of my favorite sites on the internet. I believe it is the best photojournalism site. I am awed, inspired, thankful, disgusted, teary-eyed, and laughing every two days. I would not change a thing. I do agree with #12 though, that if one thing can be improved, are the black overlay over disturbing pictures. Maybe a small summary of what we are going to find would be helpful. There have been a few times where I clicked it and it was no big deal, but other times, I would rather have not seen the image. So, I pretty much don't click on them anymore. THANK YOU SO MUCH, fantastic work!
