Japan: Continuing crisis

As if conditions for survivors and emergency workers weren't bad enough after the massive earthquake and tsunami, snow fell today in chilly Northern Japan. The dire situation prompted the first-ever televised address to the nation from Emperor Akihito, who made no such speech even after the Kobe earthquake in 1995. As aid and personnel poured into Japan, the nuclear crisis prompted neighboring countries to step up inspections of Japanese foods, and prompted governments worldwide to study their own nuclear energy policies. Meanwhile the grim work of recovery continued. -- Lane Turner (28 photos total)

It's just incredible how tragedy is heaping upon tragedy - the earthquake, then tsunami, then reactor problems, volcano - and now frigid weather. Love and strength to the people of Japan - your grace through fire is an inspiration to all.

Empty shelves in Tokyo is a half-true, I would call it even half-lie! Only the product which are possible to store for long time and/or easy to transport are missing - like rice, cookies, etc. These are sent to the damaged areas. As for the shelves with fruits, meets, fish, milk, etc. - these are as full as always!
Why can't the press try to be less neurotic?!

we don't realize how quickly our lives can be sent into complete chaos. all of our modern comforts and conveniences that we take for granted can disappear in minutes or even faster. looking at these pictures i feel guilty about being bothered by the fact that my hot water heater was on the fritz for a day. people are resilient, and Japan will get through this, and if there's anything positive about this it's that lessons will be learned from it, whether they're about improving the safety / stability of nuclear plants, predicting earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. something will be learned.

Japan Our Family
Your absence has left me full of endless days.
Like the much dreaded heat and the Eastern Shore haze.
The toying, the strings; on this ride, I remain.
Leaves me feeling at times, that I’m going insane.
It’s the ride from Hell, where I feel I will stay.
But, it was all in the cards and to Jesus, I pray.
That this strength and this grace that so few possess.
Will help carry me through this difficult process.
The love that we have is boundless and strong.
Your wisdom is by far the most one could imagine.
For your keen eye could always see beyond the horizon.
You taught us all how to love and be happy.
It doesn’t take much, live it simple, live it free!
We’re all here for a while, or a lifetime, a season.
And we both know Everything Happens For a Reason.
God Bless japan

Just how do you remove a 4,700 tons freighter ship from the sea dock where the sea left off?. The human lives cost is the most important, of course, but how much it will cost to Japan this disaster?. Good luck and courage.

#14 is a bit of a journalistic cliche, we see the 'doll in the rubble' picture after every kind of disaster. To add insult to injury this one looks like it's subsequently been run over by a car.

Having said that, it's still incredibly sad, and one hopes with all ones heart that the child who owned it lived to buy another one.

Pic #6 and #11 - If ships of that size and weight (4,700 tonne) come crashing into your house, into the city, and on the roads - Just imagine the force that hit the people walking by, the cars on the roads, the earth-quake resistant light-weight houses on the coast.

I don't see any way of preparing for such intensity of a catastrophe. I mean, how much can one prepare - one can be ready for one calamity at a time - not all of them at the same time. Earthquake followed by tsunami, followed by houses on fire, followed by radiation leaks, followed by snow...what else is left...a break-out of an epidemic!

But, HATS OFF to the fighters, to the rescue workers, to the victims, to the people trying to limit the human loss and loss of resources - a big big salute to all of you out there trying to survive, trying to help others, trying to make things work...The human spirit and will to survive is never-ending. I am sure this phase passes quickly and better things come to all of you there.

We can only watch and probably take solace in the fact that it did not happen to us today...but for how long...your plight makes our hearts heavy and sad with grief and a sense of pain... Stay strong, stay strong, stay strong is all we can say sitting here.

Hope this pain ends here...!

With love and concern from India and the globe over...Please Stay strong, stay strong, stay strong!

Through this devastation and sorrow, I pray that God will watch over those who survived and keep them safe, to those who died, may they rest in peace and to those who are alive and can help, financially or in prayers, may we as one humanity be one in extending our hands because no matter where we are, who we are, we have children, men and women who needs us in that part of the world. God bless you Japan.....

Thanks a lot of your kindness...I'm a Japanese guy living in Tokyo.
Certainly, We, Japanese people have faced any hard problems, but we have lived with nature, sometimes brute, or sometime delicate. And so, about nuclear power, we have been attacked twice by nuclear power, but we built peaceful and affluent society. Please look at us. We shall overcome someday.
Thank you.
