Egypt: the wait

For 17 days, tens of thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in Tahrir Square calling for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, 30 years in power. They had been acting out of passion for their country and dedication for change. They had protested and waited for a response. The response came in an address from Mubarak to the country and his people. Mubarak would not step down. Then almost miraculously, on the eighteenth day of protests, Vice President Omar Suleiman made a very brief statement on state television. Mubarak had stepped down. The crowds erupted "Egypt is free!" "Egypt is free!" -- Paula Nelson (40 photos total)

''Egypt is free'' to be taken over by Islamists...

I'm happy for them as long as the religion doesn't take over the power and bring them back to the pyramid age.

Mubarak has done the right thing and saved his country and citizens from what could have been a difficult and dangerous time. Great photos, the ones from Day 17 where he was expected to resign but didn't show the remarkable disappointment felt by the protesters. I only hope that progression to a new government is smooth, violence free, and ends up being good for the people who have intiated this change and creates a stable government for the rest of the world to work with.

Power to the people!

No matter what happens next, whether they get a fully perfect democratic system right away or they have to wait for years, the great egyptian people, just like the tunisian, opens today a breach for light, hope and pride for the Arabs, after colonisation, then decades of dictatorship and finally 10 years of international and western stigmatization.

Hear the crowd: "we ain't slaves, we ain't terrorists, we're human beings, we're free. Now."

Rise up!

From Palestine to Morocco, Be the change you wan't to see in the world.

YES, WE CAN :)))

I don't know how I should feel about this. On one had I'm happy that people power won but I'm also concern who/what will replace Mubarak. Will they continue the peace between Egypt and Israel or will they take an belligerent stand against them. I just hope they don't have ultra-nationalist fundamentalist Muslims take over the government. That certainly would be a disaster for Egypt.

Absolut beeindruckende Bilder.

Great images.

However sadly you'd assume that based on these images there were no independent photojournalists covering the events in Egypt, you'd think based n what 's been chosen that evryone was working for Getty, AFP, AP or Reuters.

I know that this isn't the case, (I had two colleagues who were there, a stills photographer and a videographer) but the preponderance for people to only see the work of the big agencies is part of what's killing independent journalism.

When this happens we will all be the poorer.

Democracy in Egypt, Fantastic, MashaAllah..
Our Ta7reer Egyptian young men and women made us proud again for being Egyptians.
They raised Egypt name up so high, the whole world was watching them day and night, for 18 days, here in USA,every body was amazed, and they were so happy to see there first demand was met, by the departure of Mubarak.
Those heros have worked so hard, and scarified their own lives for free democratic Egypt, they truly deserve it.. Those heros, with no doubt, will bring our Egypt back to where it should be.

Strength of the Egyptian people is great!, all countries that have not applied should reflect the state of democracy in Egypt today, they have to change, make suitable for his country, which is essential in democracy should do, must be approved by representatives of the people, should be remembered, that a leaders must be 2 x periodic, one period of 5 years, after which the select again. if not, there is no comfortable state, ditaktor would appear, would damage the country. Let us all hope that the Egyptians use their power to elect fair and honest people who protect the rights of all the people. A Theocracy is no better than a dictatorship.

I never knew most (but not all) Egyptians wanted Mubarak out so badly. The western (our) media had never said anything negative about him.

Come to think of it, must be hard for Mubarak to have serve Egypt for so long, only to be out- thrown so harshly. No one is thanking him?

I think it was picture No 28 that changed everything.

Alright, Egyptians now that you've got what you wanted. Question now is, Egypt, what's your plan? I'm just so hoping Egypt wouldn't rule like Saudi Arabia.

Let Egypt be an example to other Muslim countries, of a progressive country, who is just to both Muslims and non- Muslims alike, all men and women. PLEASE.

Best wishes and Congratulations!

Former President Mubarak was still in the palace retreat in the Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh.
It was not clear until when Mubarak would choose to survive there.
According to Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, who is also a citizen of Egypt, Mubarak's resignation is an opportunity to build national consensus and the future based on democracy.
While field-Tahrir began to empty after tens of thousands of demonstrators in Cairo spent Friday night by celebrating the fall of Mubarak.

I'm happy for the Egyptians for finally having reached the first milestone, the resignation of Mubarak.
I hope that in the days, weeks and months to follow the other demands they have are met as well, and await that outcome with bated breath.
But my thoughts also go out to the scores of regular Egyptians who rose up in protest over these past 18 days but did not live to see outcome, and their families for whom this victory is made bleaker because of it.

People power! Yes sir! When repressive dictatorship don't listen to the will of the people, it's the people who must sacrifice themselves to make changes.
I hope the rest of the authoritarian regime in the middle east takes a good look at this. It's their turn next.
Who knew that Filipino's who started people power 25 years ago would spread world wide and topple corrupt officials left and right. It goes to show you that real power ultimately belongs to the people.
Way to go Egypt!

I DO hope that I'm wrong, but pics 2 and 28 carry my worst fear; Egypt will turn into an Islamic republic.
And Islam does NOT mix well with democracy, equal rights for women and the West (the U.S. foremost).
That has been proven time and again, alas.
But hey! We're not there yet, perhaps the next (real) miracle will take place, and it WILL be modern democracy.
Fingers crossed.

Egyptians specifically and Arabs generally have a very old ancient civilization that enlighted and illuminated the world.

What have been changed, is the management, or the so-called "Governments". Governments have always been dictatorships in the Arab worlds, and now, this era has been folded.

Our governments would be elected democratically and the Arabs generally and Egyptians specifically will lead the world again InShaa Allah.

You guys better hope those Generals follows civilian laws otherwise you are are in bigger trouble than when you started only this time they will shoot a lot you people should you disagree with their rule.

What a victory against a corrupted leader who only looked after himself and family while his people struggled patiently for 30 years. Congratulations and Mubarak to all Egyptians for getting this selfish leader out. NOW build Egypt soundly and sensibly - no emotions but pragmatism. Choose a leader wisely.
AND those who have stolen artifacts etc under the strong emotional states should return them and NO PUNISHMENT- they were carried away by emotions at the time. BRAVO

I fear radical Islamist take over Egypt and try and impose their beliefs and subjugate the citizens of Egypt to a Taliban interpretation of Islam. Democracy is whey everyone is treated equally and that includes the ability to disagree with the government and the majority of the population without the fear of reprisal.

Why always blaming America? America had no option other than to work with Mubarak to work for peace in the region. Would you have prefer they invaded Egypt and remove him from power?

To all the people afraid Egypt might turn into an Islamic regime , looking at the prayers they did during the protests , well , we have five prayers per day, these people being in the same place for 18 days -their prayers should be done on its time besides these prayers gave them more spiritual power to resist the unfair regime of Mubarak and don`t worry most of the Egyptian people are liberal --The Islamic Brothers contributes only about 5-7 % of the population they may appear on top because they are only more organized from now on i guess everyone we feel more patriot and do more for his country--God may bless Egypt and i am proud to be EGYPTIAN

wow soo proud of Egypt they really deserve it
just goes to show that anyone can make a difference - its sad that some people lost their lives but what Egypt has achieved is something that would make anyone smile
Islam has nothing to do with dictatorship, etc it is democratic its just misunderstood. you shouldnt judge a religion without knowing about it.
but well done Egypt :)

Awesome!... Will of the People bring down a 30 year dictator.. it gives me hope..

but how significant is military's role in the Egypt's liberation? Would it be possible to achieve the same result if military had been taken to violent measures in quelling protests?

Dawn of democracy. Problem still remains that half the population lives on $ 2 per day. Democatie that will not change 5 to 10 years. The turmoil will continue with it. It will also prove that democracy will solve all your problems.
Good luck.

Fear and hope goes very well together.
it doesn't matter what seems to be on the outside, but what is really happening?
These people actually believe that god helped them because they prayed ?
No, they want you to believe and you do, that's how.

Only people who beleive in Good and Right and hate injustice and evil can acheive such a magnifiscence. It's never been a question of religion. It would be Right to look at the human beings , not at the way they're praying.. God bless you all.

This is a perfect example of how a revolution should be done. It came at a desperate time for the nation. It was relatively peaceful, although I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the few hundred that did lose their lives to this cause. It was done in unison. It was fueled by the younger generation, who are in fact the future of Egypt. It was efficient. And most of all, it made some noise and opened some eyes all around the world.

Now build wisely. There's a lot more work to do!

And, as always, great photos!

309 posted by Omar said exactly what I wanted to say. I wish all Egyptians well on their journey to setting up a freely elected government without fear of reprisals. Choose carefully and remain vigilant to maintain your freedom. You are a wonderful example for the rest of the world. It may be difficult task setting up a new free government that will be fair for all the people of Egypt, keep your eyes on the prize of FREEDOM AT LAST. I wish you well Egypt.
