Shanghai apartment fire

One week ago, on November 15th, in Shanghai, China, a fire erupted, apparently within construction materials and scaffolding surrounding an occupied 30-story apartment building under renovation. The flames quickly spread to the building itself and soon engulfed the entire structure. Workers and residents scattered down scaffolding, or climbed to the roof, attempting to escape the smoke and flames. Unfortunately, 58 people were unable to escape, losing their lives, and 70 more were injured in the blaze, which was contained within four hours. A number of individuals are now in custody, including some unlicensed welders. The Shanghai government has also taken responsibility for the fire and lax safety oversight, and China has just ordered a nationwide overhaul of fire-control measures. Yesterday was the seventh day after the fire, an important day in China's traditional mourning process. (32 photos total)

Such a coincidence I was listening to 'Burn it Down' by Alter Bridge as I stumbled across this article..

.. What a tragedy though, brings a tear to the eye. Rest in Peace everyone who lost their lives November 15th in Shanghai.

I enjoy the photo's on Big Picture. They are emotional and often breath taking. Why does it have to focus so much on the tragedy and hardship of the world. There is so much good and wonderful things that go unnoticed in the world. I wish it could dig these small wonders up and reveal them to the world to celebrate MORE of the positive things in the world.

爱 to the families, departed and injured. Very sad. Many people around the world, especially governments, don't take fire safety seriously. I hope that more is done to ensure fire safety.

One wonders what the "Shanghai government taking responsibility" will turn out to mean exactly, beyond saying those words.

This apartment building's units are sold between 25000-3000 RMB per square meter, or 370-450 USD per square foot.

#9 Those who calling this is a cheap building have never been to China. Read comment #8. A unit of that building is easily 400K-800K USD.
Shanghai's real estate price is almost comparable to Manhattan, definitely much higher than most of the U.S cities.

#9 Sorry but I felt compelled to reply to this, firstly because it is disrespectful to make such crude comparisons. Secondly, because if you know vaguely anything about how buildings are constructed, you'll know that building failure methods are a lot more complex than just how 'cheap' the building is. The twin towers used a fairly innovative exoskeleton structural system that permitted larger open floor plans. It failed because heat reduced the stiffness of each storey's floor beams, causing them to deflect and pull out of their connections. Each floor then 'pancaked' as they fell. The Shanghai tower is most likely of a more traditional construction - from the images it seems to be a reinforced concrete structure which is generally less prone to such deflections.

@9 @20

Also, the Chinese building did not have a plane loaded with jet fuel stike the building causing the fire to burn at higher temperatures and, most likely, compromising the insulating foam off the structure.

consider this event and then read about "WTC 7" (not wtc 1 and 2)

------

@25 - yes, those buildings of course had jets hit them and were of unconventional design. However WTC 7 is a different situation altogether; the first ever recorded occurrence of large concrete and steel building to fall due to only fire. Sure makes ya wonder how the heck that happened.

yes, there's an official explanation... but common... what are the odds of such an unprecedented event would happen on the same day as that other terrible unprecedented event....

sure the official explanation is possibly true... but unlikely...

This is why people keep bringing up this issue... its not that they all want to believe the 'inside job' stuff.... they just examined the situation closely (more closely then the main stream media did) and were left with a nagging concern that something other then the official explanation took place that day.

The building was under renovation project which is undertaken by a company chaired by a Shanghai government official's wife. Surely she made a fortune out of it by using cheap materials and unqualified workers, but at the cost of more than 50 lives. However, there is no punishment on the official or his wife up to now. That is the another tragedy in China.

Disasters do occur everywhere in the world - on the very same day the Shanghai apt caught fire, a four story building collapsed in Delhi, India, kill 66 people, and injured hundreds more. Of course, this should not give Shanghai authority any excuse for their incompetents of handling rescue efforts and enforcing building codes. But name calling and curse do not solve any problem!

This is such a huge tragedy. My aunt and her family lived in this building. Thankfully she was at work. Her husband was in the building at the time. Thankfully someone in the neighbouring buildings saw the fire and rang him. He got out on time.

I can see the building from where I'm staying right now. Everytime I look over there, it makes me want to weep. All those innocent lives lost from this disaster. But we can't blame it on the welders... It's not like they did it on purpose... It was a freak accident. the government shouldn't be blaming this on the construction workers. If the government had better fire control they would've been able to control the blaze in a shorter amount of time. This is a main problem with high rises. Lack of access to put out fires etc.

That Shanghai Gov quickly arrested eight lowly paid welders as scapegoat for the fire proves that, "China's principal contradiction at this stage the growing intelligence of the people and the declining morality of (Gov)officials." migrant workers(from china villages) doing the most bitter-tiring work, getting a minuscule wage, and in the eyes of (Gov) officials, bear the additional function as "scapegoats."
Welders, migrant workers, temporary workers, earn the money of selling cabbage, yet get the sins of selling drugs.

Shanghai authorities made the 250 venues, 6 months, 7300 people to promote the "City Better Life"(world Expo), and a building, 4 hours, 53 souls later proved this to be merely a slogan.
The degree of civilization of a country, is not the ability to hold Olympic Games, World Expos, Asia Games, nor the number of junk U.S. Gov bonds to buy, nor to get the tens of billions of billions international factory orders, but rather to allow citizens sit at home and will not be burned to death, street stall sellars will not be slapped around, walking will not be hit by a car BMW of Mr Gang (richman's son who hit and kill someone w his BMW and got away easy), not have to worry about poisonous food.
The world is full of, (ppl) not smoking but get lung cancer, the bosses need not work, when high officials that are not patriotic; true love cannot happen, fair thing can not do, cannot be a real human; can not afford to read (University), you need the housing you can never afford, you need to get married but cannot afford; those with culture can never study oversea, those with (real) ability cannot make a living, (those) with a conscience can not earn money.
Melamine harm so many children, and finally (officials) caught a few cows farmers; CCTV 10 (building) fire burned hundreds of millions of RMB, they captured several laborers who transported the fireworks; Shanghai Jingan fire burned to death 53 people, (yet) is the responsibility of four welders! As with the (novel) "Journey to the West", the monsters with background (high ranked gov officials, the rich etc) have been taken away (free of blame), monsters with no background are beaten to death with sticks.
Leopard organized a bath house, contracted out to the fox, fox (sub) contracted to squirrel, squirrel hired a few ants to work. One day, the lion to take a bath, and drowned. . . . Tiger king furious, sent the police for investigation, scolded the foxes, slap the squirrels, finally, caught (jailed) eight ants. . . . Because the ants, did not have bathhouse permit.
