National Geographic's Photography Contest 2010
National Geographic is once again holding their annual Photo Contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30th. For the past eight weeks, they have been gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to rate them as well. National Geographic was again kind enough to let me choose some of their entries from 2010 for display here on The Big Picture. Collected below are 47 images from the three categories of People, Places and Nature. Captions were written by the individual photographers. (47 photos total)
Kanana Camp, Botswana. Pulling over by the side of the road to watch a grazing giraffe, we spotted an amber head lurking behind a small mound. A hungry lioness. Watching, waiting, camera to my eye, she eventually chose her moment and pounced just as the giraffe sensed danger. The lioness gave chase, but failed. Hungry, she lay down, invisible, in the grass not ten feet from us and waited again. (Photo and caption by Alex Tan)

I love the picture taken in Guizhou China. So quiet, so intimate, that's the image of our lost home. Now China is experiencing tremendous change. Construction and demolishing everywhere. We need respect the nature, cherish the tradition, most of all, care about all the living things. The destructive growth philosophy will destroy this country and this world.

#21 is a mantispid, they typically have a short adult life, and thus aren't often spotted. It's a relative of the lacewing, in the same family: mantispidae Order: neuroptera. Awesome shot though. They've got a really cool life cycle if you're into finding out what they do.
I love #39. For some reason the fish's mouth and eye make it look a little bit like it's pouting. I can just imagine it thinking "Bummer."

These are all obviously amazing...love how #2shows the power of mother nature. #11 is sad to see, but a great pic to promote a "greener" lifestyle!
#41 has AMAZING clarity, #46 is deeply moving by far the most memorable.
Beautiful! But am I alone in finding photos too sharp these days? With advancing technology, I feel we've lost the soft edges too much, and the crispness of photos is too unrealistic. It's sharper than what I see with the naked eye. I'd like to see in photos exactly what I see myself, not a sharpened up version. Technology has gone too far. That's just my humble opinion, anyway.
These photographs truly made my jaw drop,and the their beauty is beyond astounding. This is art at its very finest- something that moves you and makes you see the world in a completely different light.

The 5th is a tale-telling photograph. Makes for a good story. The Ganesha on the backdrop makes me think of the depths of Indian Mythology - Balinese style.

A message for Stephen Hocking. It's a "Praying mantis" that has evolved from larval stage to adulthood, itself, to the adult phase. In fact, we can find this kind of insect, above all, in Madagascar.

There are many photogrphs here but Every photograph says own story.
I would like to thanks who photographers had spent lot of time for taking picture.They spends couple of month/year even without any safty they work 24 hours.Without them support its not possible for us to see amzing photograps...

#13 - among the groups of fine pictures - even this one itself, is not bad, as a photograph - the author has to bring in politics. Well firstly, tibetan people are not the only ethnic group that lives in Tibet, there are many other ethnic groups who live there as well, and had survived well. Claiming that only tibetans can survive there is groundless. Secondly, if the Chinese government is determined to flood Tibet with Chinese migrants, it would have succeeded 30 years ago. Remember their government is far for efficient than yours, for better or worse. Yet, I wonder if the author has bothered looking at any facts about the proportion of ethnic groups in Tibet now. See this is why I've lost my sympathy to this tibetan course, be it you guys want independence or "true autonomy", whatever, I just can't trust whatever you said anymore. You have a problem with basic facts, always.

very inspiring pictures, I think a good reminder for each of us to take more notice of our surroundings. there's no shortage of picture perfect opportunities, only a lack of imagination or perspective.
I am so inspired by this set, I've decided to get into photography. Thank u Big Picture and all the photographers. What camera do I need to get to take pictures like 12, 24, 31 and 41?
The proverbial two sides of the coin. Pictures of hardships portrayed in highest definition. Revealing to our senses, the world we perceive and made is only of safe environments. Void of all flavor, no interest left in routine. While we kill ourselves for a world only fit for a theme out of "Equilibrium" the movie, life is happening out there and it's oblivious to us.
Life is either hectic and colorful, or monochromatic and repetitive.
Either way, you are consume by it.

Fascinating photos, impressive even to me who grew up as a country boy next to nature & spent many long hours in the cockpit of an airplane flying low and slow, in many parts of the world on military missions. My unrecorded sights of both weather & terrain will be forever a part of my memory. These fantastic photos bring back some of those memories. Bob

The Problem is i want them all as a wallpaper at the same time . jaw dropping .
My favourites are numbers 2, 5 ,11, 16, 22, 24, 25, 27, 33 ,34, 41, and 44.
I think National Geographic should spend more time investigating the authenticity of their photos. This is the second time in as many years where there are fully photo shopped photos in the mix, as in they DID not exist at all as taken.

Fantastic photos!! I consider #15 of the Benglasheshi woman riding between railway carriages to be most amazing. Her resolute expression in perfect focus, the blur of the ground, the cramp and danger of her determined and spiritual ride -- what a surprising image of a person's day in her life.

What can I say that the others haven't already said? Absolutely incredible pics! The only additional thing I could wish for are technical details - type of camera used, film or digital, darkroom techniques used in printing, etc.
I don't have the superlatives to describe these. Number 12 stood out for me, as it made me feel so small and absolutely insignificant. Thank you all for capturing these moments that remind us of the bigger picture.

Browsing the net I come across many so called outstanding pictures, and somehow they always dissapoint.

Pic. 21 Mantispidae is a family of small to moderate-sized net-winged insects, known as mantidflies, mantispids, mantid lacewings or mantis-flies
Superb...each photo have a story...
The insect belongs to Mantispidae, Neuroptera. Although it looks like a praying mantis, it is more closely related to lacewings.

I am in no way questioning the integrity of photographer Judy Starkman (photo #46 of her injured friend Laura), but I am curious if Laura was injured as horribly as the caption describes, why are there so few injuries visible on her body, no blood, no flesh wounds or bruises? Only her feet and ankles seem to show any injuries.
Again, this is a curiosity question, not a criticism.
As a photographer for many decades, I am mesmerized by the beauty, the creativity, the lighting and the persistance of all of the photographers here. Great job

It's not a whale but a dolphin, returning from a run to the convenience store.
Seriously, I'm as upset as the next guy about people trashing beaches, but the dolphin is not in distress and the bag probably slipped off a second after the picture was taken. Great timing by the photographer!

my first camera was a brownie hawkeye in 1953($4.75!). while not as spectacular as these pictures, i cherish the ones i made with it. the camera is truly one of the great inventions.

And don't get mislead by what the earlier "anonymous" said.
As you might have noticed, lots of comments are not in English, but in French or Russian and so on.
And in French, when you say of something that it was "terrible!!!", especially about a movie or an exhibit, it is the equivalent of "terrific", which actually leads lots of French people to make the mistake of using the words in the wrong ways. Even though on this one, i'm pretty sure he used it in his French mother tongue.

22 and 24 - both are excellent. Particularly 22, which almost makes you feel as if the gases emanating from the volcano are feeding the moon or sun (whatever). It is a nice feeling that planet earth is helping the survival of another heavenly body!
It is not to say that the remaining are any less fantastic. And the some of the captions are very apt and interesting to read. I will be failing if I do not appreciate the effort, time, patience and technology that has gone into bringing out all these wonderful shots. I wish all the creative artists best of luck in all their future projects!
On the eve of Thanksgiving I view these pictures and I am reminded of the grandness of creation.

The pictures are amazing - I especially enjoyed the purple praying mantis and the fly caught in the rain drops. The next to the last picture, of Laura, hit home as I was just in a car accident and broke at least 12 bones. I believe I will walk, but have not yet been able to put any weight on my legs. She is an extremely amazing woman! I know from experience that the only way to deal with extreme problems is to emphasize the positive and keep looking forward.

These pictures, moved my soul. As a photograpger, the selection is beyond takning me back. Each and every moment of life, each, frame, we must embrace. I've seen the "other side" afte child birth. The strength and feel of the spirit in these photographs, brings me back to the light that I saw when I flat lined. In 1999, I passed, came back 8 blood tranfusions ater, still nursed for 16 months.
On May 26, 2009, I was hit by a truck while in a crosswalk, on a green walk, with a co-worker. Major injuries, then December 3, 2009, I was rearended while driving, totally re-injured. Now after my 3rd shoulder surgery, I'm headed back to surgery to have 3 vert. in my cervical spine fused, then we shall address the lumbar region, and fuse 2-4 areas.
I feel the strenght of these photographs, can see and feel major weight of the light.

I met Thomas Abercrombie, and Bill Garrett and I were classroom friends in the photojournalism sequence at the Univ. of Missouri many years past in the time of film and the transition from large to small formats. Wow! Breathtaking. Each and every photo. I must say however, that while I looked at each one at length, inspecting every detail, there is only one photo that I did double take on; And in the end, it's the only one that stands out in my mind. It's number 35, Children Playing With Roosters. The color, the lighting; How the green leaves catch the sunlight while the sun rays streaming down are captured behind them. It is perfect.
On another note, number 46 is absolutely amazing. We should all take a lesson from her, especially number 23, Bicycle Crash.

Amazing photos--perhaps the one that resinates with me the most is #11--WE are killing our earth, this beautiful planet, the beautiful creatures that are trying to live here with our plastic bags and plastic bottles. Plastic and the toxins released from plastic are killing our marine life and utilmately us. Recycling is NOT the answer--Deducing is. We all need to just say no to plastic bottles and bags--please use reusable bottles and bags--it is a super simple answer and it makes a huge difference.

Every year for many many years such a collection of photos is chosen to marvel at. Keep your words such as "miracle" or "god" or "unmatchable", I just call them amazing pictures caught by skill or accident. It's okay to rank them according to your favorites or call them all perfection -- even the tragic human or natural subjects. That's what they're there for.
Stunning images. A story of 1/60th of a second of light. And just to be there out of luck or the knowledge to recognize it. Each one is a credit to itself.

The photos - amazing, I hope everyone with internet stumbles upon these. So many elements of life, earth, and love in each picture tell magnificent stories.
It saddens me, though, to read through the comments and see how many people say these are the creations of 'God', that these are examples of 'God's' beauty. Go outside! These photographers didn't take these pictures because God told them to! They just got up off their asses and brought a (really) good camera. Think about what should really be appreciated in each picture, and if you still believe it can be reduced to God's effort in making beauty, then go read the bible and stop wasting your time on these pictures.

Every picture was absolutely marvelous!
The one with the kid fallen off the bike when the cameraman should be picking him up reminds me of the Sam Kinnison routine where a cameraman is there with a obviously starving African child. Sam says,"you know the camera crew could have given him a sandwich". Kinda what I think of when I see stars who must we worth 100's of millions soliciting donations from the middle class. They donate their time? What I wanna know is what percentage of their assets are they donating?

Wonderful photos...all of them! Numbers 17, 28 and 33 especially stand out for me: #17 has that wonderful combo of colours plus the mist creating a golden light reminiscent of some of Rembrandt's paintings... # 28 is a fantasy version of a city scape but in actuality its real and 33 again reminds me of an old master painting: the Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegal

Beautiful and profound photos! Could you please comment on model releases...Did these photographers really manage to get releases from all of these subjects (e.g. the Indian woman riding the train?) (Lack of photo releases has kept me from entering photo contests but I know National Geographic requires them.)

It's a praying mantis with its arms folded.
I'm fairly certain that the insect in Photo 21 is of the Order Neuroptera and the Family Mantispidae.
Best I've seen in a long time. I was impressed by the cloud/storm pictures, never happen again, serendipity to get them sometimes. Never seen it all, always something to make you glad to be alive.

These photos are incredible. My favorites are the ones that show nature just dominating over man, like the lightning bolt next to the Statue of Liberty; our "huge" monument to justice, is completely dwarfed by a single bolt of lightning, a single, effortless moment of nature. Our ships look like ants compared to a single storm cloud, and that's really what we are, ants.
A lot of people like to have an anthropocentric view of nature, ie., god made all this great stuff for us, but they've got it wrong. None of this was made for us, none of this NEEDS us, the animal kingdom, life in general, has existed for far longer than we have, and will exist for far longer than we will. While mankind was once in balance with nature, our inability to do so currently will soon be the death of us. Soon enough, we will snuff ourselves out, and the universe won't skip a beat, the only change will be a return to a natural, balanced biosphere and the end of the planet-wide human caused mass extinction. Personally, I think an indifferent universe is much more meaningful than the idea that the Earth is just a colorful playpen designed by a control freak to stimulate and entertain us.
SEE, OBSERVE, REMEMBER. These three words were burned into my memory and were often repeated in a Art correspondence course I took while in high school 45 years ago . These photographs have brought these words to the surface once again and will renew my vision and observations on life.

The beauty of each photo is astounding. Earth's scenes and animal inhabitants are my faves.
Sad to see the young boys treating roosters as toys. One day, eons from now, when we have spiritualized our view of life, creatures will no longer be considered the property of humans and will no longer need to eat one another to survive. Isaiah's lion-and-lamb prophecy will be fulfilled: predation will be non-existent, and the pure childlike thought will have dominion (righteous thinking, feeling, acting).
Hey, we can start living in that Peaceable Kingdom now--by loving our divine creator & His beautiful creation. Being grateful for these evidences of Life and Love is a good place to begin!

All are without question exceptional photographs. While I love the nature pictures - 1 (Giraffes) 2 (Supercell Tornado) 4 (Pyramids) 28 (Lightening Crashes) and 29 (Oasis) I must confess I am drawn to those that express humanity. Of these, I think the following stand out. 9 (Wrinkle in Time), 15 (Unsafe Journey), 26 (Fallen Angel) and... my favorite 13 (Child in us)

No matter how good of a photography equipment you have, how many photography classes you've taken and how many photography books you've read, if you don't have the artistic "eye" to compose a picture like these photographers have, which I think is a gift you're are born with, no picture is going to match any of these gems. God bless man for inventing digital photography too! for which without it, we probably wouldn't have as many chances to see such incredible creations. Thank you National Geographic!

And at the same time pictures pointing the ecological imbalances created by the human negligence thats posing several challanges back not only to the humans but also to the whole and whole of the ecosystem. So what I plead everyone is to develop an ecobalancing attitude to save our own mother nature in order to hand over it to the generations coming. Saving the mother nature is nothing but saving our own generation and saving the future generations also.

I am captivated by the lynx (34). I cannot conceive of a more perfect shot of this felidae species, eyes straight on! What a privilege, as the photographer acknowledges. The colors and composition could not have been better designed by Velasquez. The eye goes down, walled off to the left by the tree trunk,then along the right bottom and back up by the out-of-focus branch slanting back to the center, and directly back to the cat, and we are firmly in his gaze. What? No twigs obscuring his face? How can this photo be so perfect? But you cannot pose this cat -- it has to be genuine. I am in awe.
