The XIX Commonwealth Games

After much worry and criticism before the start, the nineteenth Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India have now reached a successful conclusion without any of the disastrous events that had been predicted. Of the 71 participating countries, Australia topped the medal chart, taking home 177 medals, 74 of them gold. Host nation India also fared well, coming in second overall with 101 medals. The games were held from October 3rd through the 14th, ending with a closing ceremony in New Delhi yesterday. Collected here are photographs of the XIX Commonwealth Games from around India over the past couple of weeks. (51 photos total)

not good effort from boston.com in covering CWG ... opening and ending ceremony were too good and should have been covered in a separate gallery.. you people make 4-5 photo stories for worldcup , olympics and even sometimes for tour de france and not even 2 for covering '11' days for cwg

Kapil,

This a website run by a United States newspaper. The US does not compete in the Commonwealth Games and yet the Big Picture has dedicated two photo stories regarding the games. That's surprisingly good.

Will Asian newspaper websites provide 4 or 5 photo stories on the Pan American Games in Mexico in 2011?

great effort to show the glimpse of Common Wealth Games 2010 although I was expecting 3-4 rounds of pics from the games. Anyways it depends on author. No wonder Big Picture is quiet a popular photo blog which I wait for every alternate day.

Looking forward for more pics...from all over world.

magicians.

@squats, great idea. Until poverty is eradicated, third word countries should not conduct any sporting events. That privilege should be left to a select few.

These games are an excuse to build up infrastructure, create employment, invoke passion and more importantly a can do attitude across the country that goes way beyond sports.

Interesting how this points out that India finished second in total gold medals yet there is no photo of the women's 4 x 400 relay team that came from behind to win gold, or the final badminton match which secured India's place above England on the medal board. Or all the Indian wrestlers, boxers and shooters who won medals...

Instead we get a shot of a woman sweeping the track and a stray dog being chased off the road by a policeman. Because those are the stereotypical images of poor dirty Indian people that everyone expects to see (eg Marge's "toilet" comment #43).

Also, comment #29 is right in that boston.com can hardly be criticized for only having two photo galleries on the Commonwealth Games when the US doesn't even compete, but it would have been nice to see more photos of the opening ceremony, as it was really impressive. For anyone who hasn't seen it, check out photo galleries elsewhere or videos on youtube.

Slightly disappointed to find only a very few Indian athletes' pics inspite of giving a spectacular performance. The Indian contingent could sadly not make use of the games infrastructure for practicing, else the result might have been a lot better.

I also think India's winning team of 4x400 (women) was a spectacular moment. It was a highlight for me and my friends when we made it to the Games athletics last week. We captured video of the final lap (sorry 'tis a bit wobbly as we were cheering) and images of the winners here, the crowd was deafening...http://conservedelhi2010.wordpress.com/2010/10/16/closing-ceremony-exclusive/

I'm disappointed that there are no pictures of Indian women athletes. This was a landmark event for them. The 4 x 400 meters relay women's gold. The women's discus gold, silver and bronze. Women wrestlers, shooters, weightlifters, tennis, table tennis and badminton players ... so many won medals. A great story given that many South Asian nations do not even include women in their sporting contingents. But you only feature pictures of male Indian athletes ...

thank you boston for an excellent collection of pictures of an event that is very low in the worlds interest. i'm sure very few people from the US, asia, russia or europe would know what you are talking about when you say "commonwealth games." as for "india rocks" (126) in every picture there is nobody in the stadiums. in pic 37 there is probably only 50 people in 1/3 of the stadium. shame on you . why didn't you give the tickets away, to schoolkids or anyone remotely involved in any sporting club. just anyone ! then india would have rocked.

hey! there should have been more pics of the opening and closing ceremony which was truly spectacular.and why there are no Indian winner athletes captured in their glorious moments.real shame that you're posting news in pics about the Games in India yet there are just 4-5 pics about it.no pics depicting the great country of INDIA.

Sorry, not a good selection. From this set it would appear that India won 101 medals without competing - where are they in this lot?

I thought there be many orchards in India. Or some corn orchards?

Gimme the real stuff please.

As usual, great collection of pictures capturing the spirit. However, I was disheartened to see a one-sided view. India was second in the medals tally but you do not see any images of its athletes competing. Instead the only Indian images are of the woman sweeping the track and a policeman chasing a dog. Even in victory, the media refuses to portray beyond the stereotypes.

You Indians are an ungrateful lot aren't you, Alan doesn't owe you guys pictures of the opening and/or closing ceremonies. Its pretty much only the media and the competing athletes that care about these games, which is very evident by the lack of spectators. I'm in Australia and yeah our media gave it to you guys for your shoddy preparation, but it was deserved as far as I am concerned. I am happy that it ended up being a good event, but hopefully if you are given another event of this scale, you will get your act together. Nonetheless, these are a great set of pics. Love your work!! What I love about the Commonwealth games the best, is there is no separation of disabled and able-bodied athletes, the events are run concurrently!!! Fingers crossed we don't come out on top of the medal tally in Glasgow, so our media can quit harping on about our greatness...pffft :)

The CWG are a glowing tribute to the thousands of competitors from far and near; even people with handicaps. So ea rly in the 21st century, India put forth here a memorable kaleidoscope of very gifted people enriching our senses. The whole ensemble is breathtakingly superb, and surpasses all expectations. We are deeply indebted also to the people behind the limelight who brought this landmark phenomenon to fruition.

what started like a disaster, ended well!
what was all that about?
does anyone know the true story,'behind the lines'?
why was there so much exposure on the nagitive side?
The whole event seemed to be a great sucess. The players and the partisipants were all happy and enjoyed themselves; or am I mistaken?
