Landslides strike Zhouqu County, China

At midnight on Sunday, August 8th, a temporary lake caused by a recent landslide broke loose above the town of Zhouqu, in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China. The outflow slid down the valley as a wall of mud, wiping out houses and muli-story buildings, and killing at least 1,144 residents - with over 600 still reported as missing. More than 10,000 soldiers and rescuers arrived soon to comb through the mountains of mud that buried several parts of Zhouqu County. Engineers also worked to blast the debris that had passed through the town to partially block the Bailong River, causing further flooding. Collected here are images of the landslide-affected area of northwestern China, part of a series of disasters in Asia caused by recent heavy rains. (41 photos total)

Chinese rescuers armed with little more than shovels and hoes hunted for survivors of a huge mudslide, as relatives of the missing trekked into the disaster zone to look for their loved ones. Tragic, tragic loss of life. Look in the aerial view of Photo #4 at the hills above the washed-out valley. No vegetation. A heavy rainfall is guaranteed to produce landslides.

Mudslides in China, Flooding in pakistan, wildfires in Russia. This is just not a warning signs, This is the signs of times. We must do something to stop this. The Mother Earth is wrecking havoc because we keep on consuming the earth and not replenish it by Planting more trees, reducing the carbon footprints. I hope that the people in power to change this will move faster before its too late.

Hopefully once they've recovered from this tragedy, they will engage in a tree-planting campaign to re-forest those hills.

As a photographer I love 'the big picture' always striking images, mother nature sure has handed out it's fair share of destruction this year. These images always help put me back in perspective, my heart goes out to the people of Zhouqu County

Hey Alan..
If your purpose is to inform.. I think you can do it in a way thar you may consider a more positive orientation (in your selection you may be able to include more photos from ie: people helping people, giving support between them); so, at the same time that you inform about the situation you transmit also transmit a profound sense of hope..

Very tragic.

The human population is growing ever faster. This results in living in places where we simply do not belong. That's why we hear more about the impact of mud slides and flooding. Not this mambo jumbo about planting more trees and carbon footprint, which is a money grab expression. Get real!
We're already planting more trees.

Not to quibble, but the caption for the first picture says "with little more than shovels and hoes" rescuers are helping people. There are clearly several excavators in the picture. No need to sensationalize the story.

Oh No!!! Now China!!!? First it was Russia with all that fire. Now it was Pakghistan, with all that water. Now it's Chinese with all this mud???

I'm thinking about Global Warming because seriously:

-How long does it take before the oceans heat up?
-What happens when we have to wear SPF 100... in the winter???
-What if our children don't ever get to know what snow is?

...Things to think about while we're not riding bikes everywhere but instead riding cars....

Put on your thinking caps sciencetists: this has to be solved!!!

So many natural disaster lately, with so much needless loss of life. Tragic!

I wish I could understand all the Chinese comments there. I put it into the translator to translate it to Czech but the result was not always very good.

I come from the Czech Republic (EU) and I wish I would understand all the problems over there in China - it´s a huge country and too far to receive good news here. I can only read some English media and I could find some good sources of information... but still, when I see this I have the strange feeling that the world is so complicated and different in every single step you go... and it´s so difficult to understand all the problem each nation has!

We´ve also had some floods in CZ but it is definitely not the same case - not so big and devastating. What to say... ---

Dear Heavnely Father, please bring the rescuers and the rescued strength, comfort and healing. In Jesus' Holy Name, Amen.

To Peter who thinks car emissions make floods happen, the real scientists have figured out that global warming based on human action is a scam. Instead, you might notice that solar flares affect our weather and the sun has been very busy this month. No amount of so-called carbon credits (Gore's bait-and-switch money-making scheme) can cause the sun to flare up or to calm down.

In this case, man did do something stupid by stripping the trees which are renewalable. The Chinese are noted for long-term planning; for some reason they didn't plant a tree when they took one. It's a horrible price to pay.

To the friend from CZ in #94:
Nearly all of the comments in Chinese are complaints aganist the Communist Party and Chinese Gov.
And one of them says "local gov. realized the fact that Zhouqu would be distructed if a mudslide happen due to a rainstorm after the Wenchuan quake in 2008, but the request for relocation of Zhouqu was rejected by higher gov."

Welcome to China,my friends! I feel really bad for all of this terribleness. A bird in the hand is better than a hundred in the bush. Give a little, take a little. The cup is half full. Once, twice, three times a lady.

Please remember all this next time you fill up your car with like a hundred gallons of gas and then just burn all of it in like two days.

Oh my God. People need to WAKE UP about global warming!

How long will it take until we OUTLAW oil??? The corpration profits are too high so probably we can't. That would also probably alleviate the problem of giving so much MONEY to terrorists too, and help ending the heroin.

Why can't we do this? Makes sense to me and a billion other people. If you don't think so, well, just ask the flood/landslide/katrina victims...

I'm OK with what the government has done about the rescue, but I strongly question that who should be responsible for the tragedy? Because the landslide is not only a natural disaster, and as I know, the landslide in Zhou Qu can partly be due to the deforestation of the region which used to be a very beautiful county, and a lot of plants on the mountains...
However , In China, the mass media controlled by the government only focus on the rescue, nothing was discussed about the reason of the disaster and how to avoid it. That it what I'm confused about and even angry with.

People easily jump to a conclusion of tree cutting being responsible. Tree cutting did leave the dry hills exposed but that's not the case here. If you look at the satellite pictures, you can see that trees along the landslide path were actually well preserved. Zhouqu is in an area where many dozens of landslides occur every year. While none of landslides was on such a scale, the record torrential rain in previous weeks was also extremely rare for a region of very low precipitation and high evaporation,

Would it be possible for you to check the naming conventions for the many cities, towns and locations that you mention in your captions against those used in Google Maps?
Doping so would make it far easier to find the location on a map....particularly Google's map.

Amazing photos it makes you wonder if we have any idea as to how the planet will behave when we abuse the environment like we all do, the mad rush to build and locate as cheaply as possible in locations that need sound investigation to probabilities in the future to the detriment to many.
China is not the only one, countries around the world suffer from profit and run developers.
You can only feel for those who suffer by the actions of hose who should know better, and only Governments of the day can correct this, no other.
I can only praise, commend Boston Globe for photo's such as this for public awareness, lets us hope that many will not be backward in coming forward with aid as many of these people are only inhabitants, not decision makers.

To all the Chinese and Tibetan people who have lost their lives and to the survivors of this horrific tragedy my heart is with you.

I pray that one day live in freedom and under a government that does not destroy the forests and land, a government who builds strong building only for themselves and then hides the truth from their own people. Shame on the Chinese Government!!!

I pray for all my brothers and sisters in China and Tibet.

In Beijing and around China last Saturday night at Midnight, they government issued a 24 hour entertainment blackout in remembrance for the victims of the landslide. No singing, KTV, bars, massages. Only CCTV wall to wall remembrance and rescue coverage.

Instead of taking artificial measures like this, and using the same PR playbook the National government has been employing since Wenchuan and 5.12, both local and national governments need to take serious preventative measures.

Showing you care about the rescue effort is only one half of the problem.

As an American I can only say

Wow! Lots of wumaodang-ers earning their daily mantou here. Wait until the laoban discovers you're all nailing the same board. Probably refuse to pay. Another day w/o steamed buns and soy gruel. Ohboy!!! They may even send you to live in a Tibetan area in Gansu where the surrounding mountains have been completely deforested. They still need wood for chairs in the Great Hall of the People. No leader worth his weight in gou shi is going to plop his spoiled ass down on plastic to sleep through the next session of the National People's Congress. So, cut those trees, boys! Cut those trees! Just remember that the next ones swept away may be you.

So much pain, so much suffering, so much loss.... This summer has been terrible for Asia, from Pakistan to China. So many factors coming together all at once to create a catastrophe. My heart aches for the friends and family of those killed, and for all those who were hurt or made homeless by the landslides. May you find the strength to carry on, even through your pain, and the peace to sleep and recover your strength for the next day.

For those who have lost a child -- I hope China repeals the one-child policy for victims of this disaster. It's terrible to lose a child, but to lose the only child you will ever be allowed to have would make it even worse.

Prey for all the survivals and wish victims rest in peace.
Two years ago, Lanzhou University realeased a report in local newspaper that some mountains in Zhouqu were not solid enough due to deforestation, sadly it did not arose the government' enough recognition. Economy is the overriding issue in China nowadays, " first pollute, second change" is performing in the most areas of Chinese cities.
China still has a long way to go before a new social system was established.

Natural catastrophes and mud slides occur throughout the world. When there is an excessive rain as a result of storms, no matter how much forestry there is, when the ground becomes over saturated there is erosion, sink holes and mud slides. This is not a new phenomenon, It has been occurring since the creation of the planet. Before Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism Hinduism, Sun Worship, Roman and Greek Gods, on and on and on.What is key here is perseverance, determination, sacrifice, humanity, hard work, material supplies and psychological and emotional support coupled with leadership and coordination. ,

Very unfortunate that lives have been taken and ironically by the faults of mankind himself who causes Nature to erupt beyond its control! Such calamities around the world could not occur if only human kind observes the limit of his own greeds! Will this event and those past Tsunami experiences wake up everyone's conscience and work together to reserve whatever nature 's resources that still holds in sight? or is it too late?
I wish the relatives of these victims strength and face the sad episodes without too much agony. May their souls rest in peace.
