2010 Tour de France - part II

The 2010 Tour de France cycling race is now over, with Spain's Alberto Contador claiming his third win in Paris yesterday. Andy Schleck of Luxembourg finished 39 seconds back, and seven-time tour winner Lance Armstrong finished 23rd in his final Tour de France. This 97th running of the iconic race started in Rotterdam with 198 riders in 22 teams of nine, and finished yesterday, 3,642 km (2,263 mi) later in Paris, France on the Champs-Elysees. Collected here are a handful of images from the second half of the race - see part I for earlier photos. (41 photos total)

great photos! omg the little dogs in # 24 think they're part of the match!!! no little doggies you're not part of the french tour!!! and people please don't confuse this with the french open, lol. people always confuse the french open with the tour of france. one is a bike thing and the other is a tennis. one is a sport and the other is a different kind of sport where there is no defense part to it. anyway, great pics and viva la radio shack!!!

@Dogsaren'tSheeps lol i can't believe i thought that was a dog! now that i look at it closer you are most probably right. BUT, how do you explain the blue dots? maybe they are witches?

Also, maybe you can help me find out what is in the man's hands in the 28? i thought it was a javelin but it looks to be all wood and he has on almost no armor. so then i say maybe it's a pool stick, but why? so then i just say i don't know and that i hope it doesn't jab that pony.

Photo 30 : yet again the caption writers get it wrong. Mark Cavendish is NOT ENGLISH, he is Manx - from the Isle of Man. This is a small island, it is NOT part of England, nor is it part of the United Kingdom, it has it's own Parliament, legal system and currency (that happens to have parity with UK Sterling).

STOP CALLING CAVENDISH ENGLISH!!

ben - the isle of man relies on the UK military for its defense.

It is not technically part of the UK, but the UK effectively controls it.

the isle of man is cute, but doesn't have any real sovereign power.

it also uses the British Pound as currency.

in light of the above facts, it's not that big of a deal.

Great, great pictures. A superb mix of action and landscapes.

By the way, as well as Cav' being Manx (not English), the "coach" in picture 30 is Erik Zabel, one of the all-time great sprinters and one of the greatest ever German cyclists. He won the Green jersey six times and took 12 stage victories in the tour.

Cav' has already won 15 stages of the Tour. He will already be remembered as possibly the best pure sprinter ever - and he is still young.

PS As the Isle of Man is a Crown Protectorate, you can call him British if you prefer.

Just as well you are anonymous, or you'd be sued for libel. Pity you can't also be sued just for being full of sh*t. Where is your evidence? Nowhere, because there isn't any. I suspect you're French.
I love Le Tour. My only argument with it is with the Green Jersey - they need to chaneg teh way that is done - there is no doubt that Mark Cavendish is the best sprinter int eh world - by far - and that jersey should be his by rights.

Great photos, thanks for posting. Reading the comments about doping, why so bitter? (Simone)...and (Anonymous) there is a consistency of optimal ages for endurance athletes, something Lance is well past. What goes on iside the pro peleton is likely pretty consitent among riders/teams. Let the sport governing body deal with it. Meanwhile the TDF is a spectacular event!, 100 years ago, today, and probably 100 years into the future.

Outstanding pictures. Especially #38. I am sure the symbolism of Lance looking back at his last Tour is lost on very few. Regardless of how you feel about him as an individual, his contribution to the tour - overall wins, continuous battle regarding the doping controversy, comeback from cancer and his return from retirement - put him in that pantheon reserved for great athletes. Just like Diego Maradona, you don't have to like him to appreciate his contribution to his sport.

Dear David, I can't understand why you don't recognise a sheep. Unless you are making a joke. He ha.

As for those who think Armstrong did not dope check out the steroids he used for 'saddle sores' and later got a post dated certificate of exemption for. Or the epo found in his bloods taken before there were tests, but saved by the lab. You must have heard about this stuff. He has never been busted, but he has tested positive at least twice and maybe a third time in the Tour of Switzerland (covered up). I am sure you must have heard about this stuff.

No doubt he is the biggest global media personality in cycling. But also not the finest character model.

@52 (Phil): The Green Jersey is a points competition for the most consistent rider. It is not an "end-of-the-stage-sprint" competition. Cavendish wins the stage but is definitely not the most consistent rider on the course. I think there should be more points awarded for the "sprint" points spread throughout the course, and less awarded for the stage win. This would really show which rider is most consistently at the front... which is what the Green Jersey is all about.

Here Ye, Here Ye,

I thusly denounce the participants of this sport to be cheating scallywags of the highest order and will state that the sport, if it can still be called a sport, as a whole is circumspect to the point of being a sham, a production, a false endeavor or interest. Further, I pronounce it quite comical that the French have turned a beautiful tournament of champions into something resembling more the WWE [formerly WWF], a scripted "sport," than a true contest that makes proud the hearts of men.

For Lance Armstrong, undoubtedly the face of the sport and it's most respected and singularly performance enhancing drug free participant, to have the walls of what was once a dignified sport collapse around him is quite the shame.

Alas, I'll never stop watcing, such is my character: looking for hope under every rock, dignity in every shadow, and justice atop every hill.

I yearn for the cycling days of yore.
