Opening weekend - 2010 World Cup

The 2010 FIFA World Cup opened last Friday in South Africa, after years of preparation, with an Opening Ceremony at Soccer City Stadium - the first matches taking place over the weekend. Thousands attended the opening concerts and matches in person, while tens of millions watched events unfold on screens large and small across the world. Collected here are some scenes from the opening ceremonies, the first several matches, and fans young and old around the world riding emotional rollercoasters while watching the 2010 World Cup. (42 photos total)

I like Football, I like the motion you feel seeing your country giving all its strong in a game.
But after seeing other pictures of oil, war, earthquake.... we must remember we are living in one world, we must remember we are together in the problems of the earth.
Congratulations for the pictures!!

Most American people do not appreciate the game of Football. The American sport Psyche, like everything else American, is instant gratification. It does not mean if there is no score on the board, that the game is any less enthralling and captivating.

Stick to your World Series that, surprisingly, does not involve the World and the rest of us will enjoy football.

The beauty of football is its simplicity. You only need a ball, nothing more. No expensive equipment, no special field, no complicated rules (ok, maybe off-side.). What you see in this tournament is exactly the same game played by children and adults all around the world, from the poorest villages to the fanciest country clubs. That's why we all love the World Cup, because we all play the game, and it's a hell of a lot of fun!

I played soccer for 3 years when I was a kid and I still consider soccer to be an unwatchable sport. Nothing is worse than watching a scoreless game, with a bunch of guys grabbing their knee in agony when someone brushed up against them, then standing back up. The over acted fouls makes soccer look 3rd world and stupid. I'll stick to hockey, hockey is basically a faster pace soccer game on ice, where the guys get absolutely crushed and get right back up and play.

I love the fact that the sport unites nations, but wow...is it ever boring to watch. It's ping-pong with a 1-0 or 0-1 final score. That's all it is.

to John Starks (#135),

the World Cup is the final stage of a global qualification tournament that takes two years, where countries from each continent compete for a limited number of spots. You can check the details here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_qualification

Posted by JM June 15, 10 12:14 PM

john starks - there are qualifying events to get to the world cup, thats why there are only 30 some teams. why do you have to get down on something so wonderful. - at least its bringing those 30 some countries together, and many more are watching and feeling the emotions and joy even if their country is not playing. its amazing that people cant see the beauty in the world cup. im not even a huge soccer fan but i think it is really really neat. stop being a crab and smile

Soccer? Really? Soccer? I understand that there are [allegedly] a lot of people who like this, but come on.

The difference between soccer and a foot race is that the foot race has lead changes. The difference between watching a foot race and taking a nap is that there are at least benefits to taking a nap.

It's an excuse to drink for an entire day [or weeks] though so you know the Brits love it.

Soccer? Pass.

That aside, the pictures are great, just like every other gallery. Your photographers truly are talented. More so than soccer players. Too much?

@ john stark, the world cup has qualifications being played to earn your ticket to the biggest sport event in the world. Its the only sport that involves ALL country's off the world.
So to your question, yes the whole world contests for the biggest price to be won off all sports. Its not like the world series, where people pretend it involves the world. Instead, with soccer, like it or not, you truly are the best in the world.

on topic, amazing pics that shows how big the sport is through the entire world

There's nothing like a World Cup to bring out the soccer haters.

We know you don't like it and you think it's boring. Hey, isn't there a four-hour baseball game on with 10 minutes of action in it you can watch instead of commenting on a soccer thread?

#135 - john starks:
205 teams have taken part in this world cup, what you are seeing now is the finals. For reference there are 192 countries in the UN, it it fair to say this is truly a 'world' cup.

Great pictures as ever.

@ #50

Yes I did play the game. Quite fun to play, but the most boring game ever to watch on TV. Games that are played in the central zone, with about 5 shots on goal and way to often with an end result of 0-0 are garbage to me.

Hockey beat Soccer any days and nights in greatness and emotions. But what ever flot your boat.

All this commenting about soccer being boring and not involving the whole world is just silly you guys! Everyone knows there's not much action in soccer, and that the same could maybe be said for baseball. Everyone in the world has to qualify for the cup so it involves everyone.

all the best wishes to every team! but most best wishes to USA!!! how cool would it be if we won??? sadly, nobody would really care i don't think. i would!

Wonderful photos, just spectacular. Really great idea to include fans watching in nations all over the world, they may have no idea just how similar they all are, huddled around the television, cheering! It's a touching sight, thanks for posting these.

P.S. Love the photo some photographer took of all the *other* photographers busily snapping photos of the action, what a sense of humour!

I don't exactly understand how people think that every game is going to end with a definite winner. These teams have gone through an extensive qualification period, which means that their teams should have not only offense skills but defense skills as well. Sure, it's frustrating to watch 90 minutes and not having anyone score but unless a team has an utterly sloppy defense or a supremely stellar offense that is generally the way the game is supposed to go. It's definitely no fun watching a game where one team is getting swept, because you begin to think that the team is of poor caliber and that is definitely not what the World Cup basis itself on. These teams, and players are supposed to be the world's best in Football. And frankly, I think 0-0 games or 0-1 games are a good representation of that. Personally I watch to see the way players handle the ball, the way a team's defense works, the way a team's striker interacts with the rest of their team to gain a victory, a player's interpretation of ball placement, the way they've been coached in terms of where they should be on the field in relation to the ball. Wins are spectacular, but I find seeing a team use every ounce of their knowledge of the sport to fight back and not lose their place stunning.

Excellent photos and presentation!!! Even though this is not Champions League level football, it is truly a magical moment to see excitement and all those powerfull emotions in the eyes of people from all over the world. Truly a world united!

The quality of the football played so far seems to be above that of other World Cups. The low scores and spirit of the players on the field stand as testimony.

And low scoring is sooooooooo exhilarating..and far from boring: 1 goal makes the difference most of the time between losing and winning.. and that goal can come at any moment during the game.. everyone is waiting for it to come.. hence the energy and madness of anticipation. these are truly human emotions.... you cannot understand that unless you grow up with it, so I can understand the Americans somewhat :)

Peace and long live the game!!!!! Vamos Espana!

Living in the USA, there is very little interest in the World Cup, so it's great to be reminded that those watching it here are not alone. Not many people here believe that the rest of the world stops for World Cup matches.

So thank you. It made me feel very emotional.

However, being English, I am mortified by the fighting and the litter depicting England supporters. How utterly, utterly shameful. At this moment, I am so glad I am not from Manchester.

To the guy of post #144. First of all Soccer or better known as Football in 99.99% of the world but in USA, is the most popular sport in the world. The whole world (since 99.99% is very close to 100%) is watching this sport event right now. Now if you don't like it don't watch it nor comment on it and go back to your favorite sport.

I wish the Americans would stop posting criticisms of the sport.

They clearly don't 'get' it.

The pure emotion of scoring a goal in football (soccer) is better than any touchdown, basket or home-run as they don't happen every 5 minutes.

The USA will never understand, nor experience, the passion that so many countries experience during a World Cup.

In the US, you won't get 90% of the population watching a make-or-break game which involves your nation in a tournament which is every four years. You only have the Superbowl which is absolutely nothing in comparison and involves two US teams every year.

So I suggest you stick to commenting on your own sports (which no one else watches/plays) whilst the rest of the world watch the greatest tournament on Earth :-)

John, you said most people don't pay much attention to 'soccer' but I'm afraid it's the most played/watch sport in the entire world. The World Cup does involve all countries unlike the baseball 'WORLD' series involving only two.

There are 32 teams in the World Cup because they qualified for the finals after playing various other countries from around the world. If all 196 countries competed in the finals it would be rather long tournament.

Also, yes John, the USA does have a team.

Your country plays 2 years of qualifying games and then makes the biggest world event and you dont have a clue ??
As for Daniel ... you can change your tv settings to not allow the drone of the Vuvuzela to affect your game on tv. if you dont like Vuvuzela rather sell your ticket to 1 of the millions of others that love it. Oh and the new vuvuzela's are designed to be less harsh on ear !!!

This is the REAL FOOTBALL! Nothing wrong with American "football" (which I think should be appropriately called "Handball") but football or soccer as Americans call it is the real football. It's a sport of skill, endurance and teamwork. It's a sport which anyone can relate to irregardless of race, religion, rich or poor. It crosses all sorts of differences. Everyone understands it. It's an even playing field for all nations. I'm really sorry for those who don't understand it. It shows that they have not been to parts of the world, witnessed the beauty of this sport when played with other nationalilties. It's a sport which can be played anywhere with just 2 pairs of legs-barefoot or with shoes, a ball, an open space or just a street (where you develop the skill of ball control or else you'll be breaking windows or flower pots). I have played since I was 9. And at 45 I still love and can still play it with much enthusiasm. Long Live FOOTBALL! Long Live the World Cup! Long live the soccer moms and dads! This 1-1/2 hour sport when played can burn that fat from donuts, hamburgers, enchilladas, and grilled steaks. I thank God for such a sport.

To some of the comments about the vuvuzelas. Remember, it is a much different vibe at the actual game. Given the the controversy surrounding vuvuzelas it's interesting to see how many tourists and fans have adopted it.
To really experience it though, you must come and watch a local match between two teams such as Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. There you will witness the true atmosphere and rhthym teh crowds generate with vuvuzelas. There are a number of anthems the supporters have, and one can witness one section of the crowd taking the lead and the rest following of in concert.
Vastly different from the inane 'buzzing' that can at times be found at the world cup matches currently being hosted.

As usual, stunning imagery here. Always expect to see some of the greatest photo-journalism at boston.com. Hands down!

We don't hold up much hope of winning this afternoon when we play at our time 16.00 but that's not the point, everyone in South Africa is behind our team and thankful that the World Cup 2010 was hosted for the first time ever in Africa. To the dumbwit Ryan - it is the World Cup 2010 not some championship. Get your facts right before commenting.

Proudly South African and loving the vuvuzela.

Very Intense! Thank You for sharing the excitement, beauty and drama of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. I only wish I could be there to here the shouts of joy and the thrill of victory. I loved the intense reactions on the fans faces and the excitement of the teams. South Africa has much to offer the world. One day I hope to experience the beauty of its people and land. I now have a hunger to learn more about football (soccer) and plan to attend some games. God bless!

Amazing compilation of pictures.

Irony. When you see picture #40, the Palestinians and foreigners have to see a unifying sport and world event against a wall designated to keep people from unifying.

I'm sitting in Johannesburg today after my team won their game last night. While they may not have done enough for the World Cup, they did enough for us. What a game, what a team, what a country! What an amazing encapsulation of the sport, the energy, the unity and the spirit. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I hope to see the fans coming back even if the world cup is finish. I live in a beautifull country and I am so priviledged and blessed to share it with the world...........to see all the well-known soccer teams is breath-taking for us.......South African's love their football esp the English. The biggest rivals here is Man United and Liverpool. Lol I think Chelsea was added to the list this year.

Obama (president of the United States) said:
"Everybody's going to be rooting for you" he said.

Mr. Obama mentioned that while soccer is not as hugely popular in the US as it is around the world, the World Cup is one of the world's biggest stages. He said he would be following the games on ESPN to make sure they were doing well.

"Wish you all the best," Mr. Obama told the team.
Obama know it very well. The worl cup is the king in the world.
In USA the football (soccer for americans citizens) is growing up and they are making good the things in the football. Greetins for everybody. let's enjoy the world cup 2010.

Thanks for sharing. The pictures are stunning. Brought tears to my eyes. I have NEVER been so proud to be South African - not even in 1995 when the rugby WC was hosted here. Probably because football is just so much bigger. To our visitors - we KNOW you are enjoying our beautiful country.....and that there are no lions in our backyards. The rest of you watching on TV....you're missing out - the atmosphere in SA is unbelievable. Come here for a holiday in the future. Bafana made us proud!! It doesn't matter that they are out - they inspired us, they gave us hope. What matters is that SA is hosting the BEST WC ever!! Vuvuzelas & all - it's unique. Show some appreciation. To ITALIA, my dad's country, - my heart broke on Thursday with the teams exit. I feel your pain. (I have relatives there & met them in 2007 - belpaese - beautiful country too.) THUS: VIVA SOUTH AFRICA, VIVA BAFANA BAFANA, VIVA ITALIA.....Italy 4ever.....no matter what. The only thing missing in 2010...is the TELEVISION referee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
