Poland in Mourning

On the morning of Saturday, April 10th, Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria, and 94 other members of Poland's government and clergy were on a flight to Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. Their airplane, a Polish Air Force Tupolev Tu-154M, crashed in apparently heavy fog, clipping an antenna and breaking apart in a forest less than a mile from the airfield, killing all passengers and crew. Although observances took place around the world over the weekend, Poland today begins an official week-long period of mourning for the victims. President Lech Kaczynski will be buried alongside his wife on Saturday, according to Polish state television. (33 photos total)

Mourners arrive to light candles under a giant cross at Pilsudski Square in Warsaw, Poland, in memory of late Polish President Lech Kaczynski on April 11, 2010. Kaczynski, his wife Maria and leading members of the Polish military and government were killed when the presidential plane they were traveling in crashed while attempting to land at Smolensk, Russia on April 10th. The delegation was on its way to attend memorial services for the thousands of Polish military officers murdered by the Soviets during World War II at Katyn. (Sean Gallup/Getty Images)

pardon my crudeness on this one, but from the title paragraph, why are they mourning a handful of people? planes crash all the time, and this is the first time i have ever seen a country mourn a plane crash for this length of time.

Could someone explain the candles to us? There's probably many like me who are not familiar with the culture.

Regardless of the reasons, that many candles placed in mourning is very stunning.

Not with every plane crash a nation looses so many elite people at the same time - including President, his wife, members of goverment, nearly all major military leaders and president of central bank.

It's polish tradition to light candles on graves, to memorialize those who have died - as a symbol of eternal light. During one of our holidays - All Saints' Day on 1st November, literally millions of candles are being lit on polish cementaries.

Thank you for your support

Posted by Bart April 12, 10 02:10 PM

Im from Poland. Some asked why the Poles lit candles. Well, it is an expression of our sorrow, but also a symbol of remembrance and prayers for these people. We always light candles on the graves of our dead. And its a big tragedy for us. We lose a lot of good people.. President always wanted world to know a truth of what happened 70 years ago in Katyn. We will remember what happened 70 years ago and what happened on Saturday. And I think, now He did it. I don't know what will be with Poland without this people. But I hope, that it learned us something and that Poland is a strong national. Thank You all for Your support and prayers it means a lot for us. God bless!

What a tremendous shock and what a terrible tragedy for the people of Poland!

When I try to imagine what it must be like for you, I think about how we felt in the US when the planes crashed into the towers in New York on September 11, 2001; I think losing so much of Poland's elite in one plane crash must feel similar. The shock and sadness from that event lasted for a long time, and unfortunately, I think Poland's will, too.

My hugs and condolences to all Polish people. May your pain soon be healed.

(I didn't used to know anyone in Poland, but then I started playing a game called "The Witcher" that was made in Poland, and now I know several Polish people. Strange that something like a game can bring people together.)

Well, maybe it's difficult to understand-but in one mement we've lost a lot of people who were ruling our country. Of course- lots od people die anymously every day on roads at homes-but this what we've suffered cannot be compared to anything.
to Doug
traditionally we light candles to show the dead the light of eternal life-it's our custom which we repeat every year, especially on All Saints' Day and on major holidays such as Christmas, Easter, birthdays.
and, that's my personal opinion is such-that we show our dead that we remember and care
Thanks for being with us

Poland lost their president, his wife, former president, 6 army leaders, head of central bank, ministers, the total of 88 government people and a few other people on board. It was not just an ordinary plane crash.
And they flew to Katyń, the place where over 20,000 Polish people were murdered by the Russians. Now this is a 'second 'Katyń' for the Polish people.

Dear ~kino, all people who died in this tragedy were political elite: The President of Poland and his wife and other very important people from Polish government, army and Church.

They were flying to Russia, in order to commemorate 22 000 people who were killed by soviet army during Second World War (1940) ( this year was 70th anniversary of that genocide ). That's why it is so staggering and tragic.

A huge loss, a huge blow for Polish democracy. Laczymy sie wszyscy w zalobie.
The pictures are beautiful and outstanding.
Why Poles use candles? In Polish culture it’s a symbol of rebirth or resurrection. In the Slavic tradition, on the Halloweens Eve (polish ‘Zaduszki’, spelled ‘Sadushki’) in the old times Poles used to light fire and stay with it all night, they believed it will summon and worm up the souls of their died relatives and ancestors. In Christianity fire was the symbol of, again, resurrection, it was helping people to look in the future with hope, but as I said, it's a far older practice than Chistianity in Poland. In Poland there is a special kind of candles in glass containers, often with cross (it’s called ‘znicz’ which you pronounce similar to ‘snitch’) which are used only on occasions connected with death.

70 years ago, Joseph Stalin and Soviets decided to arrest and kill moreover than 20 000 polish military commanders... People from that plane were flying to Katyn, to commemorate it, to pay tribute to these soldiers. 70 years ago, Poland has lost its elite. On last saturday, Poland has lost its elite again...

In 1940 over 20 000 officers had been murdered by Russian fulfilling Stalins orders. In that group of Poles were - doctors, professors, teachers, politicians and members of polish army. A big part of inteligent people witch were able to fight against communism and Stalins Russia. Thank YOU. We won't forget

From what I read the President is to blame for putting pressure on the pilot of the plane to land during foggy weather against the advice of air traffic control. He tried to overrule a pilot previously in Tiblisi and the pilot refused. He also got his motorcade shot at in Georgia, putting lives at risk just for a political charade. He was a nationalist, Catholic fanatic digging up the past to stir up hatred between Poles and Russians. Still it was a tragedy no doubt.

Even though the death of these people is tragic, I do not get why people feel so sad because their president died. I'm not trying to be sarcastic I'm just genuinely wondering from where does this emotion comes from. If the prime minister in my country (Belgium) would die with some other people from the gov, I don't think I would sad at all. Was this president someone exceptional ? If Lech Waleza died, i wojuld understand because he's someone exceptional...

Can someone start to explain.

We, Poles, will survive another tragedy in our history. It may be never known if Russians have had anything to do with this accident - similarly to the death of general Sikorski while he was investigating Katyn murders. In our long history of struggle for freedom the Russians have committed unspeakable crimes against our Nation. The crimes they have been denying for decades. It is this irony that more Polish patriots died on the Russian soil while traveling to attend the ceremony to honor more than 20.000 murdered Polish officers in Katyn in 1940, by Russians on the Russian soil. I salute all those who died defending Poland and those who live to protect her freedom. Maciej z Warszawy currently in California

Thomas: It wasn't just the President. There were people from all political options - current government, their oposition, ppl who were building Solidarnosc (Anna Walentynowicz) together with Lech Walesa, representants of famililes of polish officers who were murdered in Katyn. All of them were invited by President to fly to Smolensk and show respect to victims of Katyn.

I don't think polish gov is exceptional, I even think they are not too good. But the whole situation is so ironic, so unbelievable, that it's just very sad.

Maybe it's cruel what I will say - I think that not everybody will miss the president. But I think that everybody in Poland can find at least one person who died out there and will be missed.

Posted by sneakie April 13, 10 10:53 AM

@ thomas (comment #163):

Regardless of any criticism that was ever outspoken towards the presidency of Lech Kaczyński he was elected in free voting in a democratic country, which might be quite natural for the citizens of western, well-established democracies but is not necessarily the case in Poland.
Brief history lesson: Poland celebrated it's 1000th anniversary as a State in 1966 and is one of the oldest nations in Europe. Sometimes stretching from Baltic to the Black Sea and being one of the top players in world politics, sometimes wiped out from the maps for as long as 123 years, sometimes loosing but never defeated.
In April 1940 the upper layers of Polish society was mercilessly executed as POW in the forest near Katyń - one Polish generation was deprived of its future leaders, scientists, officers, lawyers, politicians and so on. The flight there was carrying officials and families to conmemorate the victims.
You don't have to be Slavic and have a Polish soul to realize such a tragic and ironic coincidence. At least the Katyń lie (i.e. Stalin's USSR was not responsible for this genocide) will now end but for what price!

What we are mourning in fact is the tragic and painful fate that has and apparently continues to be part of Polish history. For the first time ever I am decorating my house with national flag, because apart of the (sometimes very bitter) dissapointment that my coutnry gave my since 1989 when the communism collapsed deep inside I am and will be Proudly Polish.

Thank you, people from all over the world, for your sympathy. We need it so much and it helps us finally believe that we are not surrounded by hostile people but by friends all around.

Our friends in Poland have kept us updated about what is occuring in Poland, the country of my parents and where I still have relatives. The tragedy is in the totality of the Katyn event. How the lies of a Soviet dictatorship prolonged the thuth from being told and in this final act of confession or telling the truth. Perhaps this would have been avioded if the truth were told at the commencement of the Katyn event.

No 163 - the answer to why do Polish people mourn so badly after politicians?
Its not that the Preseident was a well liked person - many people (including myself) did not like his politics. But, as all the other people of the plane, these were nevertheless fairly elected representatives of our country flying on duty on this Saturday morning to commemorate Polish history in at Katyn Massacre 70-th Aniversary. Waht is more, these people -the President, all military staff, head of National Bank of Poland were involved in day-to-day running of the country for the last 30 years or so, since the fall of communism so we came to trust them as our leaders. So despite the politics and opinions, loosing people from across higest position in our country is a great loss. The crash came as a shock to everyone, as Walesa rightly pointed out - our head was cut off....

To Sansy Hendry: HE WAS NOT A NATIONALIST. That's is an insult. If what you said was true he wouldn't be mourned by the Jewish elite. See :
"Kaczynski was a staunch friend of Israel and actively supported Jewish causes in Poland. As mayor of Warsaw, he played a key role in the decision to found a Museum of the History of Polish Jewry, currently under construction on land donated by the city, and he was the honorary patron of the annual Festival of Jewish Culture in Krakow."
Now that's what you call nationalism and Catholic fanatism?

Sad pictures!
Of all the planes in Poland, you would think that the presidential plane would be the best maintained and with the best flight crew flying it.
The media is insinuating that the pilot ignored warning from the control tower and was told to divert to another airport due to weather conditions. Maybe the foggy weather contributed to the disaster. Could be pilot error. It's not the first time a pilot made an error in judgment and crashed a plane. Or it could be that flying death trap that Tupolev manufactures.
Hopefully they buy Boeing airplane for their next presidential plane. Better buy two. You can't have all VIP's flying on only one plane.

Thanks for all Your good words and thoughts... :)
It's really unbeliveable. That it happens that day and there!!!.........
We lost so many great people in one moment...!
But it's not only about mr President and other very important and great people...
Their death is like touching this terrbile wound of Katyn... Again.
And it wakes up us, all Nation to remember who we are, to remember our history - so full of blood and sadness but also greatness...
To remember about our heros and those who died 70 years ago in discusting, inhuman way!
And about pain of our, their families who were waiting for them for years and don't know anything about them... They were our elite, best people, soldiers and intelligence, murdered in this Katyn forest... And hurts still when comunism have been denying this crimes for decades!
It hurts still...! They died for our country, for us, for our freedom and our identity as a Nation.
For me... ech... it's now a lot of emotions... But it remindes me that I'm Polish. And Poland should be for me like Mother, Mother who hurts with her children... And it's MY country and my history not others, someone! My and my responsibility for it. And besides all bad things that I can see I love my country and I'm so proud of our history and of many our brave, great people!!! :) And - as it was the reason for Mr President and rest of our elite going' to Katyn - I want to salut them and say thank You....!
Maybe now we see that many times we were not worth this... And maybe now we are standing with tears in our eyes, 'cos we couldn't look into eyes of those who died there few days and 70 years ago - our brothers murdered there, in the same april days...
And in this black color of mourning is small white color of Hope - for those who believes in God and not - that their death wasn't worthless! Because now all world would hear about Katyn - that what they wanted too...!
As it was said last Sunday: "They were going there for world could hear about so big hurm that has happend 70 years ago. Could it be more loud scream for memory of this crime than sacrifice of own life?"...........

Ps. English in progress... ;)

Our President - Lech Kaczynski - wasn't the prettiest man on Earth but he had the prettiest spirit on Earth: great wisdom, honest soul, strong vision of unity and solidarity. In the times when everything is fake - He wasn't faking anything: He had a vision and He strongly followed it. Postcommunist's media in Poland hate him. Why? Because He was the true Polish Patriot. He knew that evil from the east still exist and had courage to fight it. He knew that postcommunists on Kreml still dream 'bout great empire. It was His idea to bring hope to Georgia during Russian agression and perhaps He even saved Tblilisi from those KGB agents rulling now in Russia! He then acted like a true Hero when European Union and US did almost nothing... How sad.

The true Patriot died when he flew to commemorate the other greatest 22000 patriots murdered in Katyn in 1940 by NKWD (the former KGB). He died so You could learn about it I guess...

I will miss You Little Big Man.. like the others from this plane, the Elite of My Nation!

Lech Kaczynski was one of the BEST presidents Poland had. He was a patriot, he fought for our freedom in the 1970's and he was not afraid to state his opinion even though it wasn't politically correct (although it was the best option for our country)
The only reason people say that he wasn't the best president is because he wasn't a PR personality. He did not need to be one. He did what needed to be done and didn't make a big fuss around it.
Poles will understand this now because he is gone.

Of course we will deal with this and we will survive. We just need time to mourn because this is indeed a tragic loss.

Skladam kondolencje wszystkim Polakom.

Mo deepest condolences to ALL people who died in this horrible crash.

To Ossowski: Here we go again.....Russians are at fault. Great. Let's don't forget how Poland occupied Belarus for years and how they treated Belarussians. You obviously don't talk about it..... or don't even know. Unthinkable crimes.....Stalin (Georgian, from Georgia which Poland supports) killed millions of Russians, Ukrainians and so on. Every ass talking about its own... just like Jews do. Nobody mentions that Russian front pulled 75% of all German troops and it was main reason Germany failed. Who do you think was fighting....Poles? If you are such a patriot why do you live in US? Pathetic....

I belong to a group on Facebook who are asking to air the Oscar nominated film "Katyn" on TV stations worldwide. Please consider joining at to honor Poland, Kaczynski and the other 95 who perished near the forests of Katyn where 70 years ago, over 20, 000 Polish officers were brutally murdered.
The movie and the event it portrays explains why this is all so extra painful for the Polish nation and Polonia.

Mój Boże

Mój Boże, dlaczego wezwałeś do siebie

a ból i tragedia nas wreszcie jednoczy.

Żałosny wiatr przycichł, wśród drzew z cicha kona,
choć mgła już opadła, las szumi inaczej.
Miast rosy upadła na trawę łza słona.
Spójrz Panie jak polski Twój naród dziś płacze…

Thank you world for your support. Their death wasn't meaningless as it helped to promote the truth about II World War massacre in Katyn. For all these communist years many governments knew about it and knew who was responsible but fearing the migth of the Soviet Union, and having in mind good relations with the Soviets they didn't care about the truth. Now the truth is exposed. The whole world will be aware of the tragedy in Katyn through last Sunday's events. So no, that death , as much as it is painful, is not futile. those lives have not been lost in vain. Let's pray for all these Poles_ those who had died 70 years ago and those who wanted to commemorate them last Saturday.

Posted by Margo April 15, 10 04:51 PM

I wrote this to a friend on Facebook who inquired about this situation: the Polish President's plane carrying him, his wife, top military leaders, and other high-level government officials crashed uexpectedly on Saturday, April 10, 2010, as they were preparing to land and attend the 70th Anniversary Ceremony in western Russia observing the massacre of 22,000 of best of Polish leaders and thinkers of that era at a place called Katyn Woods. In effect, the crash of this plane was like a "decapitation" of the current Polish national and military leadership, and considered to be "the second Katyn." I love Poland passionately, and have spent every Christmas and New Year's Holiday there since 2000 - a total of more than 25 weeks in this amazing country that has always been a friend of the U.S., since before the birth of our country. So my heart aches with all the Polish people of the world over this unbelievable tragedy.

Who do you want to cheat? History Kaczynski caused gift. It was the worst president. In a few months had to be new elections. He had the support of 10-15% of the vote.
What deserves to be buried among kings. Unless its pressure on the pilots led to the death of nearly 100 people?. What effect such a death.

At the beginning, I didn't know what to think about it, I was absolutely traumatized and couldn't believe but now I'm getting used to it and start thinking about future. Nonetheless I didn't vote on Lech Kaczyński on last elections I have respected my President a lot beacuse the majority of my brothers and sisters chose him.

Of course tragic plane crash. Nobody told that there was not special permission and invitation for this flight. Kaczynski organize this flight against diplomatic rules...He was not my president! he was nationalist . Now is strange bad mood in Poland mainly hysteria. Church has more to decide than government! This is in not democracy now,. it's it tragic and stupid. Mainly are mob rules in media. Poor country with manipulated people. Hope that's next weeks start to be normal.

National kind of sadness - terrifing but unifing.
On saturday, maybe for the first time in my life, I saw a politic speaking on tv and really believed that every word he said is truth and spoken from the heart.
This tragedy reminded us of many things we tend to forget in everyday life. I don't know how long this atmosphere and attitudes will last. But I know I will remember. And I know there are others who will. And even when one day everything goes back to 'normal' this mixture of grief and pride will remind me what kind of person I want to and should be. I am proud to be Polish.
You have changed me. Rest in peace.

Sincerest Sympathy to the Polish people!!

Your president sounds like Bush- did what needed to be done- a true statesman! Very unlike our current President Obama, who has an enormous ego-wants the worship of the world, yet does not have a good side---still is just a politician after the money too. Thankfully there are leaders like your President who give us hope!!!

There are many amongst us, Polish people, who know and understand what happened and what has been going on in our country for recent 20 years. This tragedy is the symbol of the power that evil people within our country have. They manipulate through the media and oppress our nation using different means than before 1989. This is more dangerous since their activity is hidden now. They are the same people and families with their roots in communistic mind. They are organized well like masons and hide all their cruelty. We do not have a democracy in Poland. This is a fake. This country is still ruled from behind the scene by the same people. They went for big business after changes in 1989 and they created this illusion for us. Polish people, after wars and communism, have to learn how the normal society should work. This 20-year period did nothing about it. We just got familiar with diversity of products that western world have had for years, our cities become colorful because of billboards, we started to have more channels on TV. But this is still ill organism just having nice make-up.

I find it ironic that the president was on his way to mourn past victims and he and his entourage were to become victims as well.

I have friends in Poland that are very upset about this and even friends in the Polish communities I know in North America feel heart broken at another tragedy in the lives of the Polish people.

I understand the pilot was tode to divert to another airfield to land the plane and he did not. This raises the question in the mind of any reasonable person why would he as a responsible pilot do such a thing?

It makes you wonder but then we would only be adding to the tragedy
and I for one will not.

Things happen and we are not meant to understand the question WHY

Because there was and is no answer to WHY and there never will be.

Prezydent Lech Kaczyński dążył do silnego państwa, chciał by duży kraj w centrum Europy był niezależny, bogaty, prawy. Głupcy Mu przeszkadzali, ośmieszali Go, aferzyści chcieli mieć spokój w okradaniu nas. Dziś jesteśmy biedni i pozbawieni mądrego Opiekuna. Fundują nam głupka na prezydenta, człowieka dużego wzrostem, ale malutkiego klasą i rozumem, lenia, gbura, ciecia, nieuka. Cóż to za satysfakcja oszustwami, oszczerstwami zdobywać władzę? Ano dla prostaków jest to bez znaczenia.

Having been overwhelmed by the recent flood in our country I dare to say nothing is done in order to explain the mysterious crash in Smolensk. I call it the mysterious as we do not know much about it in spite of the fact that so much time has passed since the incident. The incoming presidential election, the flood, both have overridden the tragedy, and, no one knows when the crucial facts for the matter will see the light again. I am so embarrassed to read about our country as a weak partner among other powerful leaders.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up - for you the flag is flung - for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths - for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Hear Captain! dear father!
The arm beneath your head!
It is some dream your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shore, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead."

To Poland
I have no words to express because if I would have been there, then I would have crashed down on my knees and cried. He was wonderful personality and a great honorable leader of the nation. It was not his time. However I believe it was GOD's WILL and NEED for a person like him to be with him and keep the proper work up there.

Sometime good people are required to be taken away by GOD to his palace of heaven. I am sure he and his family is safe out there in the heavenly parliamentary palace.
