Earth Day 2010

Yesterday was Earth Day, since 1970 it's been a day set aside to remember and appreciate the Earth's environment, and all of our roles within it. As a way to help appreciate and observe our environment, I've collected 39 recent images here, each a glimpse into some aspect of the world around us, how it affects and sustains us, and how we affect it. Here's hoping everyone had a great Earth Day yesterday. (39 photos total)

The most detailed true-color image of the entire Earth created to date. Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and visualizers stitched together months of observations of the land surface, oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer of our planet. Much of the information contained in this image came from a single remote-sensing device-NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS. Flying over 700 km above the Earth onboard the Terra satellite. (NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center)

It's not hard to get. Planes fly in almost exact the same lanes over Frankfurt. Just point the camera up at the correct direction and such a photo is no problem

very nice gallery, although the frog is not a dendrobates species, it might be a epipedobates, but i dont think so either due to the shape if the body, i dont think is a poison dart frog at all...

One suggestion that would make The Big Picture even better: If someone typed e.g. "photo #32 is great" - could your blog software change the "#32" bit to a hyperlink, so that it contained a hyperlink to the internal anchor for photo 32 (#photo32). I'm always scrolling back up the page to look at the photos people comment about. If the comment contained a link to the photo they were commenting about, it would make it a lot more usable.

The woman sitting in the rough surf, in the rain, collecting rust, was the most shocking to me. Looks like a miserable way to make a living. It was good of the photographer to catch that moment of desperation.

is India only about garbage? while rest of the places are shown in good light - landmarks, satellite images, technological developments, scenic and the likes, India has been shown only in bad light. why show plastic dump? because it's earth day? or is it to portray that India is the biggest contributor to global pollution? they could have easily taken aerial shots of the wetlands of manipur & meghalaya. or of the many palaces in the deserts of Rajasthan. you know, India is pretty incredible like that. ;)

on an ending note - the pics above are pretty neat! keep up the good work, Boston. and try exploring a bit more ;) a little more. :)

Have to agree with JAR. loved the photos, but the frog is most certainly not a Dendrobate, or any other poison dart frog. Looks more like a spring or tree frog to me, but I can't begin to guess at the true species.

Of course India isn't all about garbage, and the Big Picture doesn't present it as such. Look through the archives. I've seen numerous Big Picture articles that focus exclusively on the beauty of India. Just because the one photo of India in this particular article features a dump - which exist in every culture in every country - does not mean anyone thinks India is "just about garbage".

I liked the pic of Banglore (India),because it was the legal dumping area and according to latest news Indian goverment had introduce a technology borrowed from Japan to convert solid garbage in to coal and then into electricity. So guys dont take the wrong meaning ,of gathering the garbage.

The captions are incorrect in one regard. These are wind turbines, not windmills. A windmill uses wind to grind grains. Whereas wind turbines use wind to generate electricity.

Fotos que si no fuera por ustedes no podriamos apreciar, desgaciadamente son pocas las personas que las ven y que valoran lo que dia a dia nos es entregado, el maravilloso tesoro de la naturaleza, la creacion divina que millones y millones de años tomo construir, pero.... nos estamos acabando toda esa belleza.

todos nos cuestionamos el porque no hacemos nada para cuidar el planeta, la mayoria le echa la culpa a los gobiernos, a los vecinos y a quien sabe quien, alguno que otro mas sensato se incliye en el paquete de los culpables. pero lo que si es seguro, q todo se va ensuciando mas y mas. deshielos, talas de bosques, depredaciones de especies y lo muy sonado ahora, la fuga del Golfo de Mexico.
amigos, dejenme decirles que a pesar de que hay mucho que hacer, nada se va hacer, por intereses $$$ y es necesario que así sea para lo que tenga que cuplirse se cumpla. el mundo se tiene que limpiar, se tiene que purificar y para purificar algo, primero tiene que estar sucio.

Fotos de un alto impacto visual. la que mas me llamo la atención fue la foto de la tormenta, la numero 28. Es realmente bello nuestro planeta, pero es lamentable el nivel de destrucción al que podemos llegar. A este ritmo nuestros nietos no podrán ver nada........
