Vancouver 2010, part 2 of 2

Seventeen days after it began, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are now complete. A total of 258 medals were awarded, with the United States, Germany, and Canada collecting the most medals. The second half of the games went much smoother than the glitchy first week, with many memorable performances by athletes from all over the world. Last night, a crowd of 60,000 filled BC Place in Vancouver for the Closing Ceremony, which took place shortly after the final event - a Gold Medal win by host nation Canada's ice hockey team over the U.S. The Olympic flame will next pass to London, England in 2012 for the Summer Games, and to Sochi, Russia in 2014 for the next Winter games. Collected here are photos from the second half of this year's events in Vancouver (see Part 1 for the first half). (45 photos total)

Phenomenal photos! As a Vancouverite, I enjoyed the Olympics immensely - it was two weeks of friendliness, competition, comraderie, national pride, and all out fun. Kudos to all the athletes and volunteers who made this happen!

Vancouver deserves praise for hosting such an awesome event! I've been glued to my television for the past 2 weeks. Congrats to all the athletes who participated, especially Canadian & American who broke some serious medal records.

As ever, your photo essay is gorgeous. Thank you for putting this wonderful collection together. Whether in person, or by television, it's very difficult to truly see and savour such moments without the help of superb photographers.
I live in Vancouver & couldn't be more proud of my city, the thousands who put the games together, the multitudes from near and far who celebrated and supported the athletes with spirit and friendly camaraderie, and the inspiring athletes from all countries who demonstrated such passion, integrity and courage.

FABULOUS pictures!!!!!!!! I live in Vancouver and the games were SO fun to participate in (well in spectating) and just being there with all the Olympic spirit and fantastic energy of so many people focused and loving every second. I enjoyed every minute of it. :) We cheered on our own as well as all the countries of the world. Now for the Paralympics :)!!! Amazing stories and moments to come with those as well.

Posted by TH March 1, 10 02:23 PM

39 feels soooo good!

Posted by mike March 1, 10 02:26 PM

USA did alright. They got a TONNE of bronze medals. What country got the most golds though? I think it might have been CANADA! That's right!! Booyah Yankees! Nice pictures too, by the way.

Posted by Alex March 1, 10 02:44 PM

Anja Huber is THE STIG!

Posted by Max March 1, 10 02:56 PM

Way to go USA????? Did you skip the hockey pictures? Way to go Canada!

Posted by William March 1, 10 02:58 PM

#13 really hurt here in the Netherlands. Kramer was by far the best speed skater at the 10 km, leaving Lee far behind. If only he'd not changed lanes at the wrong moment...

Well, that's sport, I guess.

Posted by Lars March 1, 10 03:00 PM

Excellent games, I am new in the country and I feel the emotion flowing in my body when I saw the Canadian flag every time the athletes won a medal, GO CANADA GO

Fantastic Photos. I had the chance to be in Vancouver for the games, and have never experienced anything like this before. It was also great to see lots of Americans there too. It like having an older brother, sometimes we can kick your ass, but we will never forget who's the bigger brother.
Thank you world for joining us Canadian in this Olympic experience.

cheer & merci!

Posted by CJ March 1, 10 04:54 PM

could use more saturation!!!

Posted by Deep March 1, 10 05:19 PM

Great pictures. I dont know how Cheryl Bernard (picture # 29) can do any good in the sport of curling? One would think that her hottness would melt all the ice around the curling playing field. Oh momma !

Posted by raul briseno March 1, 10 05:21 PM

wauw... you should do something with this talent... :-)

Posted by Hans March 1, 10 05:25 PM

Great pictures, great, great Olympics.
Just checked the downtown Vancouver area and there are a lot of photographers taking the "the morning after" pictures. Thanks for the pictures. Thanks for the feedback! Pity that all good things come to an end.

Posted by Derek March 1, 10 05:26 PM

Thanks to Vancouver for amazing games. You did extremely well to make it a great global event. And thanks to and Alan Taylor for the coverage.

Let's see if the IOC gives the games 2018 to Munich later this year, so Munich can become the first city to host the summer games in 1972 and the winter games in 2018.

Greetings from Munich, Germany

Posted by Marc B. March 1, 10 05:26 PM

I've enjoyed the games very much and am now stunned by the beautiful pictures. Respect for the professional eye that sees things within a frame and shares this with the world.

Posted by rowena, miss on canada March 1, 10 06:51 PM

Awesome photos ... they're 'golden' !

Posted by Holly March 1, 10 07:53 PM

I agree with #8

I got the feever, and the only rememedy for this fever is more CURLING!

Go Canada. We as Australians feel that Canada is our long lost brother or sister so any gold for Canada is a gold for Australia, and any medal that one of our Canadian born Australian citizens win's is still gold for Australia ;)

But really great games. I think they should really go for 20 days at least!

Posted by Nick March 1, 10 08:41 PM

These were the best days of our lives... till the next best days of our lives!
YEAH Vancouver!!

Great pix, and I want to thank every visitor that helped make these games, so memorable and fun. Sure they cost between 6-8 BILLION dollars, but knowing , everyone that was a part of the Games will be talking about their experiences, with enthusiasm, and bright smiles , that is priceless. Hope you return with family and friends soon.

Picture #9 is gorgeous!

Posted by Barry March 2, 10 12:40 AM

Truly majestic shots. Captures the essence of the games beautifully.

I've read many of the comments and chuckled at the comment suggesting that shots needed more "saturation". It's somewhat ironic, because there was a hyper reality to the games. Colours seemed brighter, individual efforts seemed more heroic, the Olympic ideal of surpassing the impossible truly tangilble, not only in sport, but in our lives with each other, on this planet.

Posted by Calvin from Vancouver March 2, 10 01:40 AM

Bravo, Bravo, Bravo to! The Big Picture has captured the spirit of the 2010 Games - from the torch relay to the closing ceremonies - like nobody else has.

I am in love with these photo essays - and nobody has done justice to Vancouver's Games the way you have! Canada salutes you.

Soooooo very proud to be Canadian! I think we, in this country, have FINALLY found our voice! Thank God for "Own the Podium" (actually...thank you to our federal gov't!).....been a very long time coming to see this time finally arrive for our country's athletes! They work sooooo very hard and very nice to see our country finally start to appreciate their efforts.....And these WONDERFUL shots truly capture the spirit that was ALL OVER THE PLACE in Vancouver, Whistler, and Richmond! Soooooo much national pride coupled with respectful spirit of support for all countries participating.....These shots truly do hit the spot!
I give a heartfelt thank you to all who came to share our wonderful place called the West Coast of Canada! Come and See us again.....EH!?!
from Terry Giblin, Fanny Bay, Vancouver Island, BC, CANADA!!!!!!!

#14 hottie

was this in 2009? didnt knew there where winter olympics, it was in the US right?

Posted by jawo March 2, 10 05:19 AM

A good selection of photos as usual for the site. As a resident of Vancouver I have to admit it was an amazing experience to take part in. As well, the games were an outstanding collaboration of sport, humanity and all forms of media.
To all who visited, it was great to have you in our corner of the country and we hope you'll come back again.

In Canada #39 will be the picture that will likely most be remembered for the next 50 years.

Posted by Yusuke March 2, 10 09:40 AM

@28 -
Please also mention the Dutch brought their own musicians to create some extra atmosphere during skating.

Posted by Marcel March 2, 10 09:42 AM

Action packed curling photography; bit of an oxymoron don't ya think?

If it isn't a scientifically measured sport it doesn't truly qualify as an olympic event; ice dancing and the like are more of an art form really. Beautiful to behold no doubt though.

Posted by Evan March 2, 10 09:46 AM

More curling and giant inflatable beaver pictures please!

In fact I want an entire gallery of each, thanks.

Posted by jimbo March 2, 10 10:43 AM

I know that Curling is not considered one of the big "glamour" Winter Olympic sports like figureskating, ice hockey, or downhill skiing ... but it is increasing in popularity, and it is a truly intense yet gentlemanly competition. I wish there had been more than one Curling photo. Now that the games in Vancouver are over, I'm finding myself in the grip of Curling Withdrawl. Do I have to wait until the 2014 Games in Sochi before I'm able to watch Curling again???? ARRRGHHH!

Posted by Chuck Anziulewicz March 2, 10 11:29 AM

beautiful pictures

Posted by Anonymous March 2, 10 11:43 AM

Great photos, like usual! These games were exactly what Canada needed, a chance to step up and show the world what we're made of. This will be a turning point in our nation's history.

Posted by Carl March 2, 10 12:06 PM

@lars(25): "#13 really hurt here in the Netherlands" - Yeah, it hurt here in the US, too. :( Nobody wanted to see that; felt his pain.

Great photos of Canadians celebrating their women's hockey victory! #39/#37. I don't understand why "Hockey Canada" apologized? Congrats to them, but hopefully they'll get silver in 2014...

As long as the curlers look like Cheryl Bernard I say bring 'em on!

Thank you for these wonderful photos!

Posted by Rober March 2, 10 03:23 PM

Wonderful shots!! Do you have any more of the crowds downtown? I think many people forgot about the sports (except hockey, I suppose) and just had a wild party. My one day in Vancouver was magical; it was nice to see the Average Joe and Joanne overcome corporatism, security and expensive tickets, and just enjoy themselves!

Posted by CeeWel March 2, 10 04:27 PM

They have to change the name of "winter olympics" to "Rich people olympics". It's amazing what these people do, they probably have plenty of time and money to do this.

Posted by A.P. March 2, 10 08:09 PM

Stunning ... Stupendous.... *sigh*

Posted by dmhlt March 2, 10 08:31 PM

I usually never watch TV, but for the last 2 weeks I have been glued to my TV.....amazing spirit, comraderie and fun. Thanks for sharing the amazing photos.

Posted by BLB March 2, 10 10:23 PM

Excellent Olympics. Wish someone had not broken into my car and robbed my stuff from the trunk. Unsafe place.

Posted by Bob W March 2, 10 10:40 PM

Glad you went minimal on the closing ceremonies. In what pride I have for our team Canada's medal success, I have equal embarrassment for the juvenile ceremonies we put on. I would have wished they had replaced the cheesy vegas-style stereotyped beaver blow-up dolls and showcased the world, not a phoney Canada.

Great shots.

Your photos really do capture all that was the Vancouver Olympics.
Many thanks go out to our American friends who did a wonderful job covering the Olympics in Vancouver and rekindling the friendship that exists between the USA and Canada.
We have our disagreements and political hardships but these games let us forget about all that and enjoy the comraderie our nations enjoy.
It was wonderful to see athletes from all over the world bask in glory and perform like never before.
Kudos to the photographers !!!!

Posted by John Cooper March 6, 10 11:41 AM

Great photos, but would have like to have seen a few more of that little country called USA, that, HELLO, won the most medals against countries where winter sports are part of their cultural heritage.

Maybe the IOC should remove hockey like they did womens softball, since the same country seems to win too much. But that would be stupid, wouldn't it?

Posted by Dave March 8, 10 12:44 PM

@MarketGarden (comment 29) I agree 100% #41 moved me too, it does every time I look at it, and I'm not even Canadian!! Amazing pictures, thanks for sharing x
