Haiti 48 hours later

Two days after the magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck beneath Port-au-Prince, Haiti, some of the massive damage is becoming more apparent. Rescue teams are arriving, aid groups are trying their best to battle huge logistical challenges, bodies are being identified, and some medical care is being given. Rescue teams from all over the world have joined the recovery effort, as the United States pledged $100 million in relief efforts. The Red Cross ventured an estimate of up to 50,000 deaths, as bodies at the local morgues overflowed into the streets. Collected here are some more scenes from this devastated region - see yesterday's entry as well. (34 photos total)

France, Canada and the USA have failed Haiti too many times before.

This is our watershed moment; Haiti must be rebuilt, and we must foot the bill. The gains of the last 15 years will have been completely erased now, but if we repeat the same half-hearted approach we won't even reclaim those gains.

Learn about Haiti, question why it is the poorest nation in our hemisphere by FAR....

It breaks your heart. How will they ever rebuild, when they are so poor to begin with? Massive aide is required to make this situation better and I am hoping that is what the international community will provide.

Step up to the plate and do this too!

My heart is so sad with the devastation in Haiti. As a nurse, I can truly say that without the high level of staff from Haiti in nursing homes and hospitals in the U.S., esp. the Boston area, our health-care here in the U.S. would suffer greatly. I hope that all Americans who work in health-care come to the aide of their coworkers, they are in need: cover a shift for them, bring them food, babysit their children, be a friend and listen, cry with them. Donate to causes to help the earthquake victims of Haiti. Pray for them and with them. At this time in the large Haitian American community, Haiti is so close in their hearts, yet so far away at this time of tragedy, waiting for news of loved ones, praying for their safety and survival. Step up Nurses, CNA's, Social Workers, Doctors, Kitchen and Laundry workers. Lets give our Haitian coworkers love and hope.

I vote we give what is going to cash for clunkers and all the other useless programs (bailouts) created in the past two years which is in the hundreds of billions and rebuild Haiti in about 45 minutes. If only the U.S Government would allow its people to decide what to do with thier own money (AKA the fair tax)! Americans are a great people and its unfortunate that the decision makers in washington ignore us.

I feel so helpless and meaningless sitting at a computer & viewing these pictures. Please donate to help these people. We spend money so easily on such meaningless things then we question it when it helps someone else. This could've easily been us. It could've happened anywhere. As for the "looting" comment. Was he supposed to "purchase" the food? From what store? From which cashier? These people are surviving. They're beautiful because they're survivors. Please donate, $1 from each of us would make a great difference in a country that, not only lives in such poverty, but has lost even that! We tend to think we can't make a difference because we're broke, unemployed or in debt. Realize how fortunate we are, we have lights, heat, a roof and some food. What do these people have left? Please donate a dollar! To Red Cross, Salvation Army, Doctors without Borders, or any other stable, established, charitable organization. Prayer may not help but that's all they have left. God Bless the Haitian people and all those who reach out and help!

How callous we humans can be! News photographers choose to stand and take pictures of injured people reaching out from the rubble they are trapped beneath rather than drop their cameras to help their fellow man.

Too greedy for Pulitzer fame and fortune instead of desiring the Good Samaritan award of anonymity for saving a human life from the jaws of death.

American and the other nations that sent rapid response teams deserve the gratitude of people. Thank God they are quick to act and not to watch!

For those who plan on donating food or water to the red cross, they prefer monetary donations. They can get more for the money because they buy in bulk and it is also easier logistically. For those who send prayers to the victims, that is awesome, but sending prayers without donations isn't helping the people who are suffering. Make sure to donate as well as pray.

Echoing what commenter #36 and #43 said. Enough of praying. Lets help Haitians and those volunteers out there helping the Haitians. They need food, clothes, shelter, medicine and care. If you cant get on to the ground and take care of them, please contribute to the aid agencies (not the religious charities).

Haiti needs to be re-built but not without their own sacrifice.
They must re-start their rice paddies and sugarcane fields.

Haitians must step up to the bat and start contributing to their own economy and not depend on handouts from the United States.

LET"S GO HAITI!

How can the Haitian PM refer to this disaster as "Unimaginable" and how is everyone so shocked when for years the Haitian government permitted substandard building codes knowing all along that a fault line ran through their country and a large quake had been predicted. The combination of [criminal] apathy and tolerance of excessive population growth made for an "predictable" and inevitable scenario which sadly has now become a terrible reality...

#30. i call that rescuing food.
food that will otherwise spoil, rot, or get eaten by (non-human) animals and insects. not to mention the chance of further collapse or fire. that bag of grain is now most likely on its way into the bellies of a whole neighborhood.

However we all choose to care... $, prayers, supplies, our time and energy, support for others who are giving, etc. it's ALL valid and important.

La situation est vraiment horrible. Il n'y a pas de mots.....

Thank you and Blessings

First, this is the saddest thing. Words cannot describe the sadness I feel in my spirit. Praying is the just the first step in this crisis. I believe in the power of prayer, charity, and generosity. So with that, I am praying that what I am able to do will go a long way to their recovery...

Their is a difference between looting and surviving. What happened during the L.A riots was looting, what that guy in the picture is doing is surviving!

I just hope that after the initial days when the media is there taking all these photos that they don't suddenly go to the next disaster and forget about them. We need the uncensored pictures.
The rest we have all seen before, dozens of times, they do not convey the true tragedy of the Haitian misfortune.

More unscensored pictures must be shown, we western simpletons need to be abhorred in order to assist these people with money out of our pockets, and not just a vague prayer.

I wish they could come here, I would be happy to let these people into my home and care for them. We have great healthcare here in Sweden, we ought to fly these people here and tend to them. And help them make the burials dignified as well. This concerns all of us.

The sad thing is that it took an earthquake for most to remember Haití. My cousiong was there serving for the U.N and my dad vistied the Chilean troops there. The pictures they brought back were amazing, I never thought there could be so much poberty in just one place.

Unfortunatly, things are going to be worst from now on.

And also, I agree with 109 and 123, in picture #30 he's not looting. Survival is crucial under those circumstances, h's doing watever he can to keep himself and his family alive. I would do the same and not even give it a second thought.

Such total devastation! It's amazing anyone survive such carnage!
I read somewhere that the people are getting really angry because they are not getting the help fast enough. Although I sympathize with their desperation, they have to realize that their government is a joke and any help they need will have to come from foreign government. They are coming as fast as humanly possible and they will just have to wait until they get there. I hope they don't resort to mob violence because that would only make things even worse.

Haiti will forever be in need of help even after this disaster. It seems that they are incapable of having a decent government who can provide help for all the people not just the rich. Shame on the Haitian government who can't do anything for its people when disaster strikes.

Someone mentioned about how photographers stand aside and don't take part in helping out the real situation. I disagree.
What are photographers gonna do? Move rubbles that have already been capsized?
Leave the helping to the real doctors and real technicians in that field.
Photographers capture images to let the world know, to be aware and maybe to keep archives for the future. Without photographers, we would not be as sympathetic, heartbroken and sharply aware of this tragedy.
I am certain also that photographers don't take photos 24/7. I am certain they take part in helping out and aiding those who are in need.

I heard some countries have sent in Drs; I applaud them!. Let's stop saying they need help and actually DO help them. There are enough resources in the World to make this happen. Even one sole country can do it. Send doctors, medicine, water, machinery, etc. We've all heard this plea by now. If I were head of a great country, I'd have sent thousands of Dr.s and all they need by now. Forget the beaurocracy of diplomacy, forget past tensions, forget any self-imposed barriers we've set through time and let's DO SOMETHING. It all boils down to one basic fact: We are ALL human beings!

This is horrible, my prayers are with everyone in Haiti. And I agree, just praying will not help these people! We need to get out there and donate money and supplies - I'm not sure if the US and other countries have this yet but in Canada, if you're with Bell or Rogers, then you can text 'HAITI' to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army.

It would be appropriate to change the caption of photo 30. As said above, this is not looting, this is surviving. "Looting", no matter the official definition of the word, gives a negative and undeserved portrait of the person in the picture.

email the white house, and request that the United States grant TPS status to all Haitians here. This doesn't cost a dime, and is the least we can do as a country. You can read more about TPS here; http://chrisblattman.com/2010/01/13/haiti-partners/ and you can email the white house here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

Comment #116. No matter how dire the situation, looting is looting, stealing is stealing. What about the person who owns that supermarket what if they don't have any insurance and all their life savings are vested into that supermarket? So by your definition, it's okay to steal someone else property just because there's a disaster!? I never read anything about looting in the tsunami catastrophe in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
The true character of any people is how the react and handle dire situation like this. There must be law and order no matter the situation. There's no excuse for unlawful behavior. It's this type of behavior that permeates Haiti's society, lawlessness and never ending corruption. It's no wonder they are the poorest country in this hemisphere.

After we all do everything we can to help ease the pain of the Haitian people and restore as much of the damage as possible, this is a great opportunity to talk about why Haiti is as poor as it is. I live in Northern California, and we had a similar (a little smaller) earthquake just days before the one that hit Port-au-Prince. There was no significant property damage or injuries, much less deaths.
The culprit in these deaths is not Pat Robertson's god or even the earthquake, but the horrific poverty in which the Haitian people live.

re #117. It only takes a moment to snap a picture, while also helping the wounded. You dont know that these photographers were just standing there as detached observers. I highly doubt they were. besides, images like these serve a vital role portraying to the world how terrible this tragedy is and hopefully encouraging them to give generously of their resources to help. I think it is short sighted to think that the photographers and other journalists who put themselves in these situations are in it for the glory and are not emotionally attached and doing what they can to help. In some cases, a journalist needs to remain objective and detached. This is not one of those cases.

My thoughts are with all of those who are affected by this earth quake. I have already given to Doctors Without Borders, and I would encourage you all to do the same (or to red cross, etc).

I'm glad someone decided to change the word 'loot' on Photo #30.

Its a shame Alan has not admitted the mistake, rather than being defensive and touchy about it.

It is hardly appropriate to use this word, and for someone to then put in brackets (in a rather sarcastic tone) a list of other words rather than simply edit the caption is very childish. Its not a percieved connotation Alan, it is the definition of the word loot that people ahve a problem with, especially when written amonst such emotive pictures.

Loot: booty, dirty money, pillage, plunder, prize, swag

It is hardly appropriate,

It's a crying shame that it took this horrific tragedy to bring the People of the World together to aid and assist Haiti. Instead of all the senseless fighting in the Middle East we should be fighting poverty. Right now these people do not need religion they need food and medical attention - then religion will follow. I can't go there and help but I can send money - which I urge everyone to do - the Red Cross is the way to go. Prayers may help but a checkbook works a whole lot better. Please send any amount.

We must consider why Haiti is ultimately so poor and ill-equipped to deal with problems of this type. Haiti is almost totally controlled (economically speaking) by foreign power, especially US-run agribusiness. All of Haiti's man-hours and natural resources, therefore, go into growing e.g. your coffee and your mangoes, none of them reinvested into her own needs.

For those of you who are mad at God or blame him, there's a big difference between causing something and permitting it to happen. He warned our first parents that things would be tragic for us if our first parents rebelled. If you warned your child that he would get shocked if he grabbed an electrical wire, and he ignored you, could you be blamed for it? God has assured us in his Word that he will not permit this evil and suffering to go on indefinitely. Here's the short answer for "WHY?" - 1 John 5:19 - "...the whole world is under the control of the evil one" - Today's New International Version. That situation is soon to change. In the meantime here's what we need to do - James 2:16 - "If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." Practical help in any form shows the genuine love of neighbor the Christ taught.

Evangelical are weird. And the only the reason they were in Haiti on "missions" before the earthquake is because Haiti is 80% Catholic. Evangelicals want to convert the Catholics. I have worked in international development. The evangelical groups spend more on hotels, fancy dinners, and bibles for the masses than they do on relief. Donate to the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders. Those are the real miracle workers.

Why are there a lot of people here blaming God for letting this happen? I pretty much doubt God had anything to do with this disaster. This is just a natural calamity that just happened in Haiti, it could just easily happen in California or Japan. This is to be expected of all countries on top of geologic fault lines.
After all is said and done, the contributing factors in such a high death rate is because of shoddy construction, bad materials, no building codes, and just plain poverty. I was looking at the first pictures that came out of Haiti and I failed to see any re-bars in most of the building. What do you expect would happened to any building that doesn't have any structural support. Obviously, it will easily collapse.
Perhaps when they start rebuilding, they will use re-bars and good cement to build their houses otherwise this will happen again and again.
Maybe the United Nations should imposed a temporary guardianship of Haiti until such a time that the Haitian can better manage themselves. It pretty obvious that they can't do it.

These threads depress me for the number of people who seem to think the most important thing to say right now is how much they hate religion, and how stupid it is to pray.

People have died. People are still dying. Those who don't die are suffering tremendously. People who are thousands of miles away are feeling the pain, giving money, and have nothing else they can do to help, so some of them pray. If that bothers anyone, I'm sorry. We'll try to be quiet. But I hope you will all at least allow us to express our sympathy in what few vehicles we have, such as this blog. (Pat Robertson, however, can go jump in a lake for all I care. I'd call him an ass, except that I wouldn't want to insult donkeys.)

For those wishing to help, find a reputable charity or aid organization already involved in Haiti and give money. Unless you are attached to such an organization, there is probably nothing you can do yourself, so the best thing is to help fund those who are in the right position to assist. Secular or religious, it really doesn't matter, as long as you take the time to check them out and see if it's a legit charity. There are websites such as http://www.charitynavigator.org/ which can help you see if they spend their money wisely or not, and also has posted a list of charities particularly well-placed to assist in Haiti, and tips for how to decide where to give. (And whatever you do, do NOT give to the Haitian government. Their track-record in that department is especially poor.) Don't respond to telephone solicitations; those are usually run by third-party telemarketers who charge the charity a ridiculous amount. (Note, however, that the text message deal is legit, set up by the White House and the American Red Cross. I find it more efficient to give directly to ARC, though, as text message donation rules require that the money be held for a period of time. That's okay; they'll still need donations in a couple of months. But they also need donations now.)

Oh god, if only your infinite mercy and wisdom which everyone seems to mention so often would have shined on these people you know, before such a disaster struck, cause that's where they really could have used it. But once again you seem to exist before and after a disaster, just not during.

Seriously, enough of this after-the-fact god posturing. your prayers are meaningless: donate food, water, money, your time, your clothing now!

I feels sorry for the massive loss of life and I hope the surviving people get all the help they need. Unfortunately, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars, Euros, Francs, will not change the average Haitians. In a few months when things starts to go back to normal, the majority of Haitian will still be poor with no option to get a better life. Just pouring massive amount of money without accountability is the same as pouring water in a bucket with a hole at the bottom.
If this is the time for a drastic change in Haiti, someone should oversee the reconstruction of the devastated areas with an oversight committee to insure that all the donated money goes to what it was intended for not to somebody's pocket who knows how to manipulate the Haitian social system.
It is time for the Haitian people to demand accountability, not just stand at the wayside while the country goes to hell.

As I was watching television and the current status in Haiti, I heard how the people are getting really angry because help is getting to them fast enough.
Well, first of all, the Haitian government is crap! There's is no infrastructure set up to deal with calamity such as this. No emergency protocol to follow, nor equipment to deal with it. There seems to be a lot of able bodied men just loitering, walking past dead bodies without doing anything about it. I fail to see why someone at the grass root level doesn't organize these men to clean up the street so that emergency aid can come through Do they need to be told what to do before they do it? Seems ludicrous to me when they know perfectly well that they have to help themselves first until foreign help arrives. They can't just stand by and be told what to do. Now there are reports of rioting in some parts of Haiti. Really, these people want to add more misery to an already miserable existence. The whole world is watching and this type of lawlessness does not agree with civilize society no matter situation.
One other thing, leave God out of these! He neither cause this to happen nor let it happen. Praying will heal the soul but it will not heal a broken body. Do something!

Saying someone is in your prayers is often used as an expression of compassion, which is fine, but you have to understand why earthquakes happen, and it has to do with science and the composition of the Earth-- not anything prayers can help.

Then you have hateful people like Pat Roberston saying the people of Haiti "deserve this" for "making a pact with the devil". How can you just condemn the lives of tens of thousands like that? He has no idea what these individuals did in their lives. Anyone who can look at these photos and not feel compassion is a sick individual.

If you want to do something to truly help then donate to the Red Cross. Even $10 will do more than you think to help lessen the devastation of this tragedy for the people of Haiti, and certainly more than a prayer.

I lived through the L'Aquila (Italy) earthquake on April 6, 2009. The rescue response was immediate and immense. People in poor countries cannot survive calamities without proper housing, medical facilities and infrastructure. The UN has asked for $500million to aid these people, money that would have given them a better chance if it had been spent to take them out of their poverty. We need to rethink our priorities and help more people to survive these terrible calamities. The Haitian people need money right now, please donate to help. I have.

a few comments are about prayer or saying, gee, i wish there was something we can do... instead of praying or wishing - go do something, pick up the phone or log into one of the organizations filtering aid to these people and give money - regardless of the amount... every penny counts and every penny helps.

Be thankful this is not your nightmare, hug those loved ones in your life even tighter and do your part as a member of the human race to help these people who need you right now.

The thing that bothers me the most is when i see those there on the news saying people are not following order, to get water and food, the Haitians are thirsty and hungry, and in need of great help. CNN and the other news stations should stop saying even a few people or being disorderly, reasoning is this. When you feed wild animals they dont follow order to eat because they are hungry, nor do they follow order to drink because they are all thirsty, so when you see people in a crisis and they dont give a Da*** about your order dont take your food or water away give it to them and let thme have it all, it will be given to all by them.

Planes can fly from Miami and deliver food and water and medical supplies in an abundant supply if they truly wanted that to happen. If a plane can fly from Miami to Los Angeles without refueling surely it can fly to Haiti and land unload and fly back to miami with refueling or waiting for the next day to leave. stop leaving planes in haiti for 4 or 5 days, it slows down the process of recovery on purpose.

The good thing, there is a lot of survivors, let's be glad for that.

The not so good thing, with all the damage, it's going to be many years before things are getting back to somewhat normal.

The sad thing, people who think prayer is going to help anyone on Haiti.

I don't mean to be cynical right now, but for everyone saying they will pray and extra 10 minutes, or God will help them, or pray for those who survived are just copping out because they can't/won't do anything real for the people of Haiti. If help comes, it won't be because of God. It will be because the decision of mankind was to send relief, doctors, and other aid to the country. If you REALLY want to help those people who need it, donate. Or if you are a Doctor, get your butt on a plane and get down there.

Puerto Rico is praying for Haiti and that everything gets better soon. I wish that we could do something more than what we are doing. We hope you keep on going and don't let your faith go away. And to all that are reading this... the thing that I've learned the most in my hole life is that we get together to do something great or to prey... everything will come true. That it doesn't mater were we came from, together we are powerful. So lets all get together and prey for this innocent people that are suffering.

If you don;t believe in God that is your business but we are all part of the global community and need to do what ever we can for our fellow human beings. Whether it is going there to help, sending money, praying to a higher power or sending good thoughts. Remember the butterfly effect.

Please be practical, just praying will not help, Lets all do something tangible to help these people in need and distress. Remember mother natures fury can strike anywhere anytime, who knows whose turn it may be tomorrow ? So lets all do a good turn today for those in need of our help and compassion.

P.S:- I think people like Rush Limburger, need to be jailed for a very long time for uttering total non-sense on Radio. Does freedom of speech mean one can say anything anywhere ? Mentally sick people do not have any right, Rush Limburger should remember that !! Was Hurricane Catrina in the USA also a result of the American people having made a pact with the Devil and having sold there sole to him ? Why don't Republicans remember such good logic when there own people are suffering ? No wounder today America is perceived as a hypocrate and self serving nation world wide, So much for American morality.

No culpes a Dios.

What happened to Haiti gives another vital meaning to preparedness. We all tend to prepare after each disaster as if we always have to learn from sad experiences before we understand the ill effects of our laxity and complacency. Lets all preprare now as the climate change brought about by our neglect and abuse of our environment will surely bring us worse disasters ahead. It brings us pain to see people suffer like this and we can only pray to GOD to ease up these sufferings that the haitians may peacefully and joyfully live life after this tragedy.

It is time for this world to come together...it does not matter which faith you have, drop your swords and come to the aid of these people who are the poorest in the world and yet they have been handed this terrible happening. Drop to your knees and pray and renew your faith. Donate what you can and help if you are able. The Haitian people are our brothers and sisters and this is not the time to forsake them. In the name of Jesus I pray that we the people learn to live and share with our fellow man.

it is very sad to see what is happening to man kind. there is a tragedy happening and what i have read are people going back and for with yes we must do some but unfortunately it is not possible for all. if praying is what you can do and what you believe then please pray if you can be there and help then be there, if you have the money to send then please send i'm sure everything that can be done if grateful. let us not lose focus of what has happened and send our prayers, help, or money. do what you can.

Amen!

Tanzania is with you HAITI!

First of all, thank you for your thoughts, your support, and above all your prayers. The people in haiti really needs all the help they can get. Even though the earthquake is more than a week old, surviving over there now is a big challenge... People are sleeping on the streets, polluted water, bodies on the streets, even people alive, still trapped in the rubble... Please be compassionate. Donate what you can. And I am sure with the help of God, Haiti will survive. Haiti is a strong country. The sun will rise again over my beautiful country, HAITI CHERIE. God Bless Haiti. Thank you.

There,s no way on earth that anyone should deserve this. Please gave them the courage to carry on , and let them know that you are the only
one that can save them from this. All we as human can do is to pray with
and for them to recover from their odea. My prayers are with you people.
I know that we are all gods children and we should always love oneanother

In times like these is when I am proud to be a human. Haiti has been in devastation for ever. However, the world decided, it could not look away. We are moved by natural disasters but man made disasters seem to have a different ramification. A totally different impact. And so.....we worry because the gas bill is too high this month and the power bill is getting too expensive and we're out of a job and don't know where to find a job.
Well we better look around and thank God that we can complain about the little things that seemingly are a big deal to us at the time. Let's take a look at the basics. Do we have a place to stay out of the weather? What about water? Food? Good health?
Now the little things don't seem like such a big deal any more.

We are the world.
We all need somebody that we can lean on
when you wake up look around and see that your dreams gone
when the earth quakes we’ll help you make it through the storm
when the floor breaks a magic carpet to stand on
we are the World united by love so strong
when the radio isn’t on you can hear the songs
a guided light on the dark road your walking on
a sign post to find the dreams you thought was gone
someone to help you move the obstacles you stumbled on
someone to help you rebuild after the rubble’s gone
we are the World connected by a common bond
We love Poor Haiti.
