National Geographic's International Photography Contest 2009

National Geographic's International Photography Contest attracts thousands of entries from photographers of all skill levels around the world every year. While this year's entry deadline has passed, there is still time to view and vote for your favorites in the Viewer's Choice competition. National Geographic was kind enough to let me choose a few of their entries from 2009 for display here on The Big Picture. Collected below are 25 images from the three categories of People, Places and Nature. Captions were written by the individual photographers. (25 photos total)

Nazroo, a mahout (elephant driver), poses for a portrait while taking his elephant, Rajan, out for a swim in front of Radha Nagar Beach in Havelock, Andaman Islands. Rajan is one of the few elephants in Havelock that can swim, so when he is not dragging timber in the forest he is used as a tourist attraction. The relationship between the mahout and his elephant usually lasts for their entire lives, creating an extremely strong tie between the animal and the human being. (Photo and caption by Cesare Naldi)

10, 13 18 were my personal favorites. However, #10 really stood out to me. Other photos show the world in its natural beauty and i would expect to see them in this collection. However, the image of the farmer and his wife seemed to represent a lot that going on in the world. Losing that older generation, the love between two people, clouds on the horizon, and a field after harvest. It reminds me of how much we are intertwined which our environment and how we change it to to suit our needs and to provide a bounty. However, in the end nature, outlives us all, individually. Such a bittersweet portrait.

This is a wonderful compilation. #23 looks like a scene from Jurassic Park!

I also submitted one of my images to the National Geographic International Photo Contest, but the image in #18 is clearly the winner under the heading of "Spectacular Waves" (compared to my submission here: http://elbelbelb2000.blogtog.com/archives/6297_1579073640/320023 )

Thanks for this compilation! All of these are wonderful photos that tell a story.

Surprising disrespect for #21. National Geo often explores human beings and their relationship and interaction with nature. This photo is as masterful as the rest. Human innocence on a seemingly endless roadway. The boy's features provide both a contrast to, and a perfect blend with the natural environment around him. Note his eyes and the scene over his left shoulder. This is a beautiful photo.

Many very good/great shots, but I go along with the poster doofus:

"However, #10 really stood out to me. Other photos show the world in its natural beauty and i would expect to see them in this collection. However, the image of the farmer and his wife seemed to represent a lot that going on in the world. Great selections. The fireflies juxtaposed with the star-patterns (13) is an amazing study in movement and illustrates something both beautiful and educational. A great use of the open shutter.

Not disrespect for 21, just not liking it. The child has been photoshopped (airbrushed) too much. What does the child have to do with innocence (dbamagnet)? The photo hardly explores humans and nature, just looks like a typical family portrait. Boring and out of place among the other fantastic photos here.

#25 is GREAT. As someone who lives around seagulls (Superior, WI), I really love how beautifully the photographer captured both the stark black and white beauty we normally see, as well as the colorful inner soul of these birds when you're able to get close. It's so immediately startling that it forces the viewer to give renewed thought and attention to something that's considered otherwise common.

Regarding the lovely smiling whale photo, I read on the getyodinolove blog:

''August 11, 2009 : Andrew saved this young sperm whale's life when some false killer whales attacked it. The sperm whale, now a seven-year-old adolescent male, is called Scar. I was lucky enough to witness the two of them playing together. Scar has been known to come to Andrew when called. He has been very gentle with people in the water with him, but is reaching the time when he will leave his pod and travel to other locations, looking for food and a mate."

To post #117 - a good lens and that shot can be straight from the camera. Have some respect for the art and science of photography.

As for shot #9 - the converse applies - the camera itself is a photo editor if you shoot jpeg.

These images collectively are great.

To post #117, re. photo 21 -- you really obviously over-rate what photoshop can do, either that, or you can't tell the difference between the genuine gem from a fake. The early-sunset lighting and overcast clouds made for the amazingly even lighting; the photog set the camera to produce very narrow field of depth and focused right on the boy's face. Sometimes, the simplest is the most telling and the most difficult. Being able to see this moment makes the photog an artist. As is #18. the patience and the diligence made the shot, but the photog knew there was the slanted backlight to highlight the color of the water. Understanding it let him capture the shot as he did, otherwise it'd been a flat foamy splashy picture at best. Two most telling examples of the craft and the art of photography -- knowing what the light is doing!

François, the answer to your question was discovered some years ago. When it rains in such places, which it rarely does, the clay becomes like a lubricant. Winds will then push the stones along randomly until either the clay dries to a certain degree, or the wind becomes to weak to move the stones.

# 21 qualifies because of contrast, composition, quality, color, content, simplicity, symmetry...
It is as much or more prolific than # 10 in the reflection of the sarcasm, determination, and self-awareness of our youth today. National Geographic has always presented people in places and their relevance to one another. It is not a exclusively a nature magazine. # 10 is great for some of the same reasons, and did tug at my "heartstrings" for a moment but, I would re-examine all before disqualifying any.

# 20 is really cool! Nicely composed. Lucky photographer to catch the man standing.

#18 is beautiful in the sense of motion and soft color.

I like all of them, but number 10 is my favourite.

The mood in the picture is really something. The dark skies, two old people in the middle of this endless field. I kinda felt a bit sad, yet i smiled. I think the dark skies symbolises for me atleast, that something comes to an end, and the endless fields makes these two people seem so small. The old woman lovingly reaching out to her husband she married so long ago. Love until the end of time.. This picture touched me. Amazing.

No. 25 would be my runner up. Crazy shot and interesting angle!

I like photo 21, however it looks to me as though it has been photoshopped. If you look above and to the left of the child's left ear the hair finishes too smoothly - it looks like a blur tool has been used - the depth of focus is too instant.
It's harder to say without a more close up version of the picture but it's enough to make me suspicious - a shame as even without blurring the background it would have been a great photo!

WOw. some amazing photos.

#1: beautiful portrait and a unique perspective. I initially only sore the top half of this photo but when i scrolled down and sore the elephant it took my breath away. Such beautiful clear tropical water and such a large majestic animal. I think the portrait showed the relationship between the two nicely.

#8 - again, another wow image. Just the shear size and power of these falls is enough but this power is contrasted sharply against the group of school kids. They are so dwarfed by the the falls. They are standing out thee and it feels as though they could be swept away at any moment.

#10: a touching story to an otherwise ordinary picture...i thought. I can see the affection from the old lady but thats about all the emotion i can gather from it. The clouds and the field and the light i dont think are anything special. Just a touching story ppl are reacting to.

#12: The light highlights the colour of this orang-utan so perfectly. Great moment and good perspective. I realy feel like im in the forest watching this moment.

#14 - a magnificent abstract photo. The colour, the patterns and the light are all so perfect and clear.

#18 - The colour of the water is a beautiful turquoise, and the light captures this perfectly. A great moment captured well.

#19 - The trees look so tall and beautiful. The mist in the forest adds great atmosphere and the hiker adds a nice reference to this great image.

#20: Just a great image. Nice colour and monotony of all the people. And of course the one unique individual. love it.

#25: Sea gulls dont usually make interesting photos. They are such common subject matter. However, this image has captured them so well. The photographer has really captured the character in this animal as well as a great perspective with the other birds in the background.

#10 by far. The photo is ... Real. Its captured the moment between moments. Try not only to look at the photo, but see it. It is truly amazing. I Love the fact of the woman being up on her tiptoes because even-thou she cannot full extend and reach, her soul-mate is worth strain and effort, and he leaning into her and lovingly watching her as she assists him. Watching only. ..... (sigh) ... so much this photo tells and shares... the trimmed maintained land even not at its prime is still a labour of love.... enjoying life thou the skies are not blue... pride, joy, struggle.... Home is Where you make it. Where the Heart is.

Life is good

to #329

maybe the blur on pic 21 was photoshopped. But using a super bright lens like a F 1.4 with a full frame format ("24x36") offers nice narrow depth of field. Or even a regular F 3.5 on medium format (6x6 for instance) will do the same. The bigger the size of the sensor or film, the narrower the depth of field. That's why most compacts nowadays always look sharp from 1m to infinity. A tiny tiny sensor, that's it...
and remember that the same blurring job could be done in a regular film lab by masking your subject to stay sharp and defocussing the head while light is on. ...not so precise as photoshop but...

I have one I want to list and then keep going back and falling in love with other photos.
# 18 took my breath away: the vivid colors, sharp fanning of the water and light illuminating the droplets is extremely difficult to capture all at once, technically speaking. #25: I don't know how many times I have tried to take a close up of a seagull like that. Wonderful job. #15 and #19 also have great angles. #23 closeup of the reptile is so freshly prehistoric. I had to look twice before I understood what the photographer had done. All of these photos are stellar, capturing my admiration and imagination.

Pict 15-The many water drops surrounding the hippos makes me feel like I need to sheild my eyes from this fight for dominance. i enjoyed studying this picture- most interesting, awe struck.

Of course everyone loves #10 (me too) but, only because it's so gosh darn sentimental. I'll vote for the once in a lifetime, action capture of # 15. And, by contrast, I find the simplicity of Cary's photo, #21, is absolutely captivating.

Posted by Gayla Yates November 30, 09 10:30 PM

In looking at #2 it struck me that the ACLU is obviously derelict in their duty. The cross in the center is wonderful, but did anyone notice the long row of "crosses" along the left side? Beautiful unintended comparison (I assume).

What's the ACLU gonna do about that?

Posted by Tom M December 1, 09 12:36 AM

Totally agree with Gayla Yates. 10 looks good cuz of the sentimental factor. I would go for:
14: Makes u want for more!!!
15: Truly unique
21: Sheer simplicity of the pic.

Think about the people taking the pictures... some were just there and go lucky while others such as #1 had to get in the water with the guy and the elephant and 1/2 submerge the camera, that takes imagination and physically demanding stuff.

No. 15 (Hippos fighting) reminds me of the time I was taking pictures at our local zoo with my new 200 mm Nikkor lens back in the '70s...Using a tripod (we didn't have stabilizers back then) I had trained my lens on a pool of water in which a hippo was lazing...Several people gathered around me and stared at the pool to see what I was shooting...Suddenly the pool erupted and the hippo came up, mouth gapping wide, splashing water in all directions at which time I snapped the shutter and cried, "I've got it!" And with that...the crowd cried in unison,"He's got it!"

And we all laughed...

Absolutely breathtaking! How can people wonder if there is a God?

Posted by Anonymous January 16, 10 10:19 PM
1111.

Oh Pleeze! Why do religious people have to attribute these beautiful pictures to a god? The Earth's systems are very complex and these pictures are not fully representational of that complexity. Can you thank god for the bloody gore that is created when animals slaughter animals to eat them? We just don't send THOSE images out for awards

Posted by Tanya Henrich January 17, 10 02:00 PM
1112.

How can you look at these pictures and not believe in a Higher Being. The
blood and gore is a part of an animal's rites of survival. No one can
reproduce anything as beautiful as the beautiful (and seemingly) perfect
yellow flower.

The power of a storm and surging water falls; with highest heights of trees, mountains, and icebergs on a sea of azure blue, sparkling beauty of a ring of fire, firefly's and the desert sand; the "gift" of a sea shell formed by the wave of sea water. The survival of the fittest, those "pampering" others, the complexity of a flower or the simplicity of a dry cracked desert floor and the animal' s busy at work, play or survival of the fittest all beautifully depicted by the photographer's, including the sage 'ness' of a young man, Godzilla and The Birds.( Hitchcock would be proud.) AWESOME PIX

To post #279. I don’t speak Turkmen but if I understand it correctly, the locals in the proximity of the crater call it “The Door to Hell.” I think Darvaza means ‘gate’ in Turkmen. Turkmen is a Turkic language. It’s very old so I’m not surprised that it’s similar to some Indian languages if you’re talking about the Indian languages in India, not native American Indians. The silk road history might explain this similarity.

Posted by Natalja Silver May 11, 10 03:53 PM

To post # 390. About #17: Even though many websites mention that the Darvaza gas crater was burning since 1971, the info I got here in Turkmenistan points at the 1950s. As I understand it, the Soviets vigorously explored the natural gas possibilities in Turkmenistan in the 50s and because of that several craters had formed during that time. Various websites mention the 1950s, 1971, and even 1986 as a date when this particular crater started to burn. It's hard to find a legitimate info on this subject on the Internet. Scholarly work as far as the dates go is also limited. Here in Turkmenistan this kind of info is even more difficult to obtain as the government holds a tight control over all sorts of information. Honestly, many locals I spoke to didn't even know that the crater exists. After showing the photos to them, they still wouldn't believe it. The most important thing here is not the date, but the fact that it does exist and that it is burning. It's a fascinating spectacle!

Leaves one speechless and with a profound sense of humility. So many spend so much time preoccupied with themselves and their own appearance, unaware that the real and lasting beauty in this world is largely that which man has not touched. Praise be the photographer who is always looking outside him or herself to discover the sheer natural beauty and amazement in oh-so-many places that most never would expect, bother or think to look for it. To capture prize shots such as these, a photographer has to be superbly gifted int blocking out all the surroundings that would otherwise catch most everyone else's attention and distract them from ever zooming in on the rare gems within these photos.
