2009 Sumatra earthquakes

About 5:00 pm on September 30th, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck just offshore of the town of Padang in Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake toppled buildings and started many landslides, smashing homes and swallowing up entire villages. The following day, As rescue workers arrived and residents tried their best to dig out and help the survivors, another unrelated quake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck less than 1,000 km south of the original epicenter. Each of the two quakes had at least one aftershock greater than 5.0 as well. Over 1,000 people are known to have died, an additional 3,000 still missing. Today, October 5th, officials called off the search for survivors in Padang, and are focusing now on caring for the living and coordinating with international relief agencies. (40 photos total)

It's unfortunate that there has been so much natural devastation in Asia lately. My heart goes out to all of them.

Posted by Eugene October 5, 09 12:25 PM

wow #32 :o

Posted by dungdang October 5, 09 12:39 PM

Powerful and sad.

that building in # 35 must have been very impressive before the quake hit.

Posted by Ernesto Tantao October 5, 09 12:45 PM

Have there been more natural disasters in recent years or have we just been documenting them more? If it's the first then, why?

Posted by cody October 5, 09 12:47 PM

Tragic pictures.... Who is responsible for these natural disasters?? ... We, the Humans have stretched Mother Nature enough and its pay back time for us.

Posted by Chandra October 5, 09 12:55 PM

Make rescue…not war

Posted by WAYOUTWEST October 5, 09 01:00 PM

Chandra, nature happens. Why does natural tragedy have to be anyone's fault?

Asian countries just can't catch a break.

Posted by Chandra October 5, 09 01:21 PM

Nah There haven't been more disasters, we are just hearing about more because of media and the internet. Go back 20 years ago and your only source was often the news or paper, not quite so global.

Awesome pictures btw, really captures the power of nature.

I believe the answer is both Cody (#5). The world is more connected than ever, news of events like these covered by people all over the world. 30 years we might not have heard of this event, other than a small article in the paper or a quick mention on the evening news.

Today's world has news coverage every hour, reporters in places most of will never see or hear of, and there is simply more and more people. Many of them living in places that are inclined to these events. It is sad they can't move to / build up safer places to live. The number of people may even be what prompts some it, as nature finds a way to balance the strain on it.

Great picture set as always. I love this website. It is one of the best ever. I hope these people can recover from their lossess and make their part of the world better than what it was before.

Posted by Andris Andriadi October 5, 09 08:43 PM

#5, we have been documenting them more. And these have been particularly unstable times for the indonesian plate boundary, which is always pretty active anyway. But the main reason is an increased documentation.

Not only we're much more interconnected than before, we're many, many more. In the old days, the earth could shake all it wanted in remote and scarcely populated areas, and nobody knew and few were affected. Today, there are fewer and fewer truly remote areas in the planet, and many millions live in some of the most active regions.

And to top it all, we're paying more attention now. Major disasters like the Indian Ocean tsunami or, in a much smaller scale, but maybe even more "noisy", for various reasons, the New Orleans flooding, made us all pay more attention to this kind of thing. The schockwaves of those disasters were kind of a wake up call to us all. So we watch closer what the planet throws at us, and everything seems more significant than it did before.

*crying* :(

Posted by Mustamar Natsir October 6, 09 03:36 AM

For # 3 and 30 I'm sure we have been documenting natural disasters more but only because of their alarming frequency.
Probably related to over-farming and mass consumption of land which causes unstable top soil/land which causes more slips and floods ect. Maybe they (natural disasters) are not more frequent but perhaps on a larger scale because of the above?
Larger population= harder, more rigorous farming + mass consumption = soil and land that is too hard-worked.
Not to mention rain forest felling and their contribution to lifeless slip-vulnerable land...

Community Gardens and food production on a small, local scale would be a great solution to these problems, I'm not denying that natural disasters don't happen even without human intervention because they do but rather we as a population have contributed to their modern scale.

Having completed the fasting month, muslims know what is it like to go hungry for so many hours like these quake survivors. But without the definite breakfast time, without assurance of food availability, top up with stench of dead bodies, it definitely much much tougher than ramadhan. May Allah strengthen the victims to overcome this disaster.

Posted by Anonymous October 6, 09 09:38 AM

Comment 12 and 34.

Dont ask 'where is GOD?'....

Where are we when GOD needs us?...
Do we really DO what ever good-deeds which GOD wanted?
Do we really DO what ever rules which GOD set ?
..... or are we just ignoring what ever GOD wants us to do?.....
.... tragedy like this.....makes us then remember GOD....else we tend to forget the existence of GOD....and get lost in our life forever....
This is only the beginning....
Anyway....all the pictures were devastating....and really captured the hearts of everyone who saw them....

i'm an indonesian and i had through another great earthquake disaster before, in Yogyakarta 2006. i've lost many people in Yogyakarta, but thank God i'm still alive and i could still help another.
What i want to ask to you is if you really wanna help us, please don't give us a "fish", but give us a "fishhook". Or it will create a new old problem, international aid corruption.
It's really hurt when you know that someone is dancing above our suffer. So please consider what you want to give to us.
Indonesia must get up by his own power and must not lie with the international aid.

I love The Big Picture, and as a professional photographer I find it especially insightfully to my own work, but I'm always disappointed by the comments posted on photo sets. With only 90 comments so far, doing a search of this page for the word "God" returns 19 results, and when one actually reads those comments, the fact is even more shocking. Its embarrassing that a fine publishing institution like The Boston Globe is attracting so many of these feeble minded idiots with imaginary friends. For those of you that still have childish ideas of some higher being, grow up, there is no "God" and there is no meaning to anything! Human life is completely and utterly insignificant in the 13.3 billion year history of our universe, where things happen because of simple, scientific cause and effect. It's terrifyingly pathetic that so many people FEAR the unknown and the fact that life is a simple game of probability, instead believing in fairy tails that opiate them with answers to everything.

Posted by Mark Alvar Peck October 6, 09 04:11 PM

There was plenty of small earthquakes since tsunami on 2005 as recorded, those buildings, especially cement concrete structures and hill area, probably have been in crack condition, therefore easily collapse in a second of a high magnitude earthquake. The Government have to prepare a program for investigate condition of buildings, housing, soil stability at hill area etc.,after various small earthquake.

Posted by fauzy October 6, 09 05:29 PM

God blesses the rest people in Padang

Posted by dneuva October 6, 09 05:37 PM

Mark (#93), you come across as a shallow, bitter man posting such comments on a collection of photos where many people are struggling with a terrible event. These are spectacular pictures about a tragic natural disaster, not a forum for you to rant about religion. Please try to stay on topic and keep your scathing comments on religion to yourself. If folks find solace in God when looking these pictures, who are you to take that from them?

Posted by Jonathan October 6, 09 05:37 PM

May their souls rest in peace... God bless their families with strength.

Posted by Candida Ustine October 6, 09 06:50 PM

Further proof that either A) there is no God, or B) he exists, but he's a petty, tyrannical, and not-very-nice guy. (But at least he believes in equal opportunity: there are photos in here of both a shattered mosque and a crumbled Catholic church.)

The pictures again prove just how awesome is nature. We pathetic humans spend years erecting residences and offices on a piece of property, only to have them shrugged into nothingness with no more time or effort than it takes a horse to tail-whip the flies from its hindquarters.

Posted by Jim Pettit October 6, 09 07:17 PM

I grieve for these people who I will likely never know. Powerful pictures...Picture #27 breaks my heart. I can't imagine being behind the camera documenting all of this heartache and destruction.

What an incredible reminder that life is a mist and you never know what the next moment will bring. I'm also deeply reminded that there are people everywhere suffering and grieving who need our help.

#85...Thanks for bringing to light how to help someone…this is true, not just in your country! Handouts are just a band aid, but not a long-term solution. I wish more governments and non-profit service organizations would take this approach to welfare and social help. ~ “Give a man a fish, and you feed him a meal. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime!”

#93/@MarkPeck - Wow. Really? You are advocating the Boston Globe censor those people who think/believe differently than you? While I don't agree with the faith statements (or the statement of how we offended mother nature for that matter) of many of those voiced on this site, I find your statement and attack on their beliefs very narrow-minded, hopeless, and not "especially insightfully" as I’ll quote from your post. You are assaulting their faith while they grieve their fellow country-men and suffering humanity. Wow. I hope that you one day find happiness in your life and can enjoy the differences of others who don’t think just like you. Sometimes it is better to just agree to disagree.

Posted by mb October 6, 09 07:48 PM

@Mark A.P: it's indeed a great set of photographs, but it doesn't mean people cannot comment about their beliefs in this matter. Since the images that were captured are showing a disastrous time, when every living people start looking deep what's the meaning of all this and why?
The freedom of speech is for everyone, including those you called "idiots with imaginary friends". So be careful on your speech my friend, probably next time someone else will imply the same "idiot" moniker to yourself.
And about God, none can proof 100% that He is exist or not exist at the moment, it doesn't mean He's not exist and it could as well means He's exist.

Posted by feri October 6, 09 08:19 PM

I was there in padang during the earthquake, a few days without electricity and clean water and a heavy downpour right after the quakes didn't stop until the next day. Everything was in chaos, the mosques kept updating us about the victims in our neighbourhood.

Thank you so much for all international rescuer team, also volunteers that came right away to hand their support with the evacuation. Thank you for the pictures on this site, i hope by seeing these we have more heart for people in series of pain. Your help and support means a lot to us!

Posted by Lita October 7, 09 02:50 AM

#93, Mark, I quite agree with you. I guess the other people who criticise you have a point on the tough tone of your comments though. But it indeed pisses me off too to read about the use they make of their god. I don't like the patronising tone these very believers tend to use in their comments, the certainty of their beliefs that underlies everything they write, even in their signature sometimes(!!)
Not a believer myself, I respect other's choices as long as I don't feel attacked, I even have 2 friends who are priests. They would never comment the way the usual American christians do on this (otherwise wonderful) blog. You'd never know they are priests when meeting them because they respect non-believers, might feel sorry for us but would never hammer godly comments on any disaster topics. They wouldn't be my friends otherwise. So if priests can easily show restraint and respect,
other hard core believers could take a lesson, just a 'god bless them' at the end of the comment would be OK I suppose, not the usual bible explanations and judgements...
#96, that's why Mark was ranting in his post. he got exceeded, that's all, nothing bitter in there. I've done the same as him before, though showing restraint.
#100, they can't even proof a fraction of a percent that he exists. And if he does, he has a serious sense of humor, sadism, or he has gone on holiday for ages.

Oh, Mighty Allah! Are you now the hater of Palang? Again you have spat on us, your loyal servants! All we do is praise you, and worship you, and adore you! All we do is build for you the most magnificent mosques! All my brothers do is sacrifice every bits our time and our moneys to you! But Great Allah, you have once again turned your back on us! Why is this? Why must this be? Is there no love for us, your people whom you have created?

But be strong, my Palang brothers! Be strong in the name of Allah! My Palang sisters, though the Quran states that you are lesser than me, my heart yet aches for you, too. Please to keep wearing the burqa to keep your desirous parts hidden in the name of Allah!! His blessings will flow to you and upon you!

#93, you state some rather conclusive ideas but don't follow them to their inevitable conclusions, if all we are is molecules, chemicals, biological processes, protein producers, if all our impulses and emotions are simply related to meaningless evolution, none of this matters, the people dead in that earthquake have no significance, it was simply chance they were in the location at that time, human existence has no signifiance, emotions and feelings have no basis or reality. So, if you really believe that, why do you bother to continue living? Saying something like "I enjoy life", "I love so and so" they are meaningless if we base our understanding of life on your ideas, if you follow it to the logical conclusion, there is no meaning, and so you should just end it

Posted by letsbeconsistent October 7, 09 01:07 PM

How can people ask where is God? Where is Allah? These are not the acts of spiteful or vengeful deities but natural occurrences (or consequences of our own misdirected acts) but one need only see those helping in the aftermath to see the presence of God, of Allah, of whatever name you give that spirit that causes Humanity to rise to the occasion time and again.

God is the good in Man wherever and whenever evil befalls him.

To: Lailatul, Comment no 77.

So, the 9 year old girl, Indah (pic no. 29), she is not really do what ever good-deeds which GOD wanted? And therefore, God broken both of her legs?
And the 11 year olg boy, Sigon (pic no 38) he's not really do what what ever rules which GOD set? And therefore, God decided to make him injured?
How about the little girl in pic no. 27, maybe she lost her father and that is because her father ignoring what ever GOD wants him to do? And therefore God decided to kill the father?
There are approx. 700 more people killed, and God decided to sweep away those 700 people because they don't do what God wants them to do? As easy as that, huh??????????
And, this is only the beginning....???????????????
Your God is a cruel God!!!!

Why suffering exist is still a big mystery to human being. There is no easy answer and therefore, please, don't try to make is easy.

Posted by Niko October 7, 09 07:03 PM

If there is a God,then he/she/it is the most cruel thing there is...(i'm glad i don't believe in fairytales like God), what makes me angry is the unwill of governments to send enough help, much countries are spending billions of dollars for making war somewhere on this f####ng planet, but for people who need urgent help there is just a small , very small, amount of money avaible....I'm a simple working man, but from my payment i donated 500 euro, i wished i could give more.....

It is interesting. In the event like this, even Atheist is searching for the answer. God is being called upon.
If human can gain an access to God by doing good deeds, then, why we are worried when we die. The fact that we are worried and not certain how we are when we die, that indicates that having good deeds, having religion such as Hindu, Buddha, Christian, Catholic, Islam, is not good enough.

Hemm Interesting.

Sorry to say Allah will not help you nor is he to blame.

God whoever and for whatever religion gave you your own choices in life to do as you will.

Giving to Allah and God makes no difference what so ever as you have your own free will. By preying 5 times a day and wearing Hajibs you are wasting your lifes and it is not neccasary because god forgives all but does not force you to waste your life. Life is for experience not controlled by invisible force. God is nothing to do with earthquake only nature and humans building cities on Tektonic plates of the world.

These people who sacrifice themselves in the name of God is an illusion created by people in this world to control society and people for their own selfish gains and ego boosting.

All we can do is help these people in reality by sending help and machinery. Have the Arab society made donation are is it just the western world that despite being hated by the muslims still send there help unconditionally.

Perbanyak Istighfar, karena ampunan itu datang kapan saja, dimana saja, untuk siapa saja.

I deeply feel very sorry for all the living who have lost much more than their childeren, their parents, their family, their home, friends and the safety of life.

I invite all the rich national states to convert - at least 1 pro mille of - their budgets for making war to aid fellow humans who became victims of nature's violent powers.

Hi, I am Bakhtiar - Indonesian

Feel sad knowing the effects of earthquake in West Sumatra and we'll keep on helping to heal the pain. World, I want to say thank you for helping my countries. May God bless you all, amen.

Warm Regards,

I totally believe with Bob Squire comments. Believing in God or Allah is good but not over the limit. Life is for experience not controlled by invisible force. So,stop blaming the Almighty up there. Indonesian has too many anger over other people's problem, supporting Al Qeada extremist, Bendera's plan to wage war in Malaysia, Jihad and etc.

Please educate your own people for the modern era. Its all illusion created by people in this world to control society and people for their own selfish gains and ego boosting.

No matter how hateful Indonesian Muslim to other races and religions in the world, we not Muslim still send help and donation.

Are people getting any help?

I used to live in Indonesia and I must say that it is one of the best places that I have ever been to. The people are THE friendliest I have come across in my 20years of travels round the world.

But I must say... and I have been meaning to say this for sometime now...
Life is cause and effect.. when a person or a country does right for the universe the universe rewards and vice versa...

Basically... Indonesia (like some other countries) needs to dispose of it's rubbish accordingly. Thousands of people travel on the Peleni boats to and from all the islands... and thousands and thousands and ... THOUSANDS of rubbish is thrown into the sea everyday... the sea is part of mother nature.

This in turns causes a build up of bad energy flowing threw the seas and over land... you can help reduce this or even prevent it...

take action and look after your country... and like i say... many other countries need to do the same.

Stop producing plastic bags and un-necessay plastic items and those that have been produced... dispose of them the right way... or use them over and over again until they are diminished into nothing.

I send love and hope to all in Indonesia and wish you all peace.

There's always a bright side though.. Despite of all the pain & loss that we suffer, I still thank God that the disaster unifies the whole world.. It touches me to watch how it becomes a 'rescue competition' where no matter what their race, religions, and interest, the whole world is working hand in hand to rescue our brothers and sisters in Padang. Thank you!!

Do not be afraid people of Indonesia !!!!!!!!! Don't let your heart be trouble !!!!
Don't let your heart grow cold!!!

God isn't going to help them. God didn't rain help from the sky
during the tsunami that hit in 2004. God is dead.

There are only people, humans, and if we are going to survive
as a race then we need to band together and stop fighting amongst
ourselves. I hope those killed have found peace. I hope disasters
like this bring humanity together.

sebuah doa memanggil sebuah harapan baru
sebuah penghiburan menghadirkan sukacita baru,,,
sebuah memori mengukir sebuah sejarah dalam ingatan kekal
dan sejarah ingatan kekal akan menjadi tumpuan kita untuk menjadi lebih baik di masa yang akan datang
Tuhan ada dan tidak akan diam ketika kita berteriak dan berserah kepadaNya,,karena Dia tidak akan meninggalkan anakNya,, jika kita berseru dan berdoa di dalam namaNya yakinlah suatu hal baik akan dinyatakanNya, God Bless Indonesia and God Bless everyone who cares bout Indonesia and bout the world,,, and God will restore our world if we believe and surrender,,,,,

Bob & Joanne,
People are praying for the victims of the earthquake & they are doing a better job then you two. Even if you believe or don't believe in God or Allah, that doesn't mean that you have to question other peoples faith in him.
Many people believe that God exists and they get along fine in life- just because one disaster happened, why should they lose faith based on that?
Even if they have anger over other peoples problems, does that mean they should suffer? The earthquake had no relevance with them having anger over other peoples problems.
I'm sure you've made many mistakes, but no earthquakes taking your friends and family away from you are they? So don't make assumptions.
And btw, by wearing a Hijab or praying five times a day doesn't waste a persons life- if they want to do that, who are you to question them or stop them? Try taking their example and sort your own lives out =/
