2008, the year in photographs (part 3 of 3)

2008 has been an eventful year to say the least - it is difficult to sum up the thousands of stories in just a handful of photographs. That said, I will try to do what I've done with other photo narratives here, and tell a story of 2008 in photographs. It's not the story of 2008, it's certainly not all stories, but as a collection it does show a good portion of what life has been like over the past 12 months. This is a multi-entry story, 120 photographs over three days. Look for part 1 and part 2 earlier. (40 photos total)

fantastic collection of images here over this 3 day span...the frame by James Nachtwey really yanks at the heart strings, the image of Bush walking away really displays how dejected he is...his head slumped forward as if the weight of all his mistakes and blunders have really taken their toll on him and the country....the frame of Obama engulfed by 100,000 supporters in St. Louis truly displays the momentum that carried him to the White house

one image that stands out was the frame that captured thousands of black clad Israeli Orthodox Jews attend the funeral of Arieh Levish Teitelbaum, the light hitting the coffin just blows me away visually

Sadly 2008 has been one more terrible year, a lot of people have suffered on our planet.
Hopefully the change is coming, starting from the USA then spreading to all the world to bring peace and a bit more humanity.

This is a slide show of the words of Jesus. My faith in relief is not in man but in Jesus. May God's kingdom come with Jesus our King, and save us from ourselves.

MATTHEW 24

Jesus said to them: “Look out that nobody misleads you; for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, “I am the Christ,” and will mislead many. You are going to hear of wars and reports of wars; see that you are not terrified. For these things must take place, but the end is not yet.
“‘For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress.
“‘Then people will deliver you up to tribulation and will kill you, and you will be objects of hatred by all the nations on account of my name. Then, also, many will be stumbled and will betray one another and will hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and mislead many; and because of the increasing of lawlessness the love of the greater number will cool off. But he that has endured to the end is the one that will be saved. And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.

Re: Liberal Bias

Every town probably has its opposing rags. In Boston, the Globe is the liberal paper while the Herald is the conservative paper. I'm not saying that they always follow this convention, but general trends bear this out.

These are great photos. Numbers 18 and 33 are fantastic. The wakeboarding in the city is great too. As for the "liberal agenda push," there's a great picture of McCain in there also, and the fact is, although both the "pro liberal" photos are getting to be cliche, as far as this blog goes, it really wouldn't be complete without them; they portray two quite fundamental events in world history (all liberal jargain aside) they just seem more "pro liberal" because the media lays excessive coverage on both events.

Keep up the great blog.

Your decision to show the mutilated bodies of Palestinians while at the same time showing the funeral of an Israeli both as art, disgusts me. by this collection i assume that you find the death of Palestinians as a beautiful thing that should be glorified, yet the same time you think the deaths of Israelis should be seen as sad acts of terror. its sad that this western world likes to view the death of one ethnic group as justified and the other a tragic event.

We didn't see anything about the RNC riots here in the United States, but we did see the Greek riots followed by the man who represents exactly what both are fighting against: someone who would impose tyranny.

Images by their nature are complex and can be read in many different ways, which is why we like images - they are like peepholes into our reality. We are a beautiful and terrible people, so full of freedom and rebellion, hatred and oppression.

We are all in this together and until we realize that we will simply be trapped in a self imposed cage and surrounded by our own madness.

No doubt, the collection is mind-blowing. But I am surprised as a big international website and responsible attitude how can you say that all of the terrorist in the Mumbai attacks were from Pakistan (Clearly showing in the picture who attacks on mumbai). Just think this neutrally what common sense says. How come only 10 peoples from some other country can hold the city for 3 days? How anybody can borrow that much ammunition in the high security zone if government can not help them. From my point of view, it is just like fantasy or can be really possible in bollywood films. Never in the real life.

So many complainers and whiners....
This is what happens when you have an uneducated democratic society free to express their opinions.

People have been dieing and suffering all over the world since cavemen. This year in particular is no worse and no better than any year before it, and there is no way to objectively measure the lack of something. People think they can come onto a blog and change the world with their words.

A wakeboard (#24) needs thrust (normally from being towed by a boat) to move. Where is he getting his from? This question has plagued me since first seeing this picture.

Thank you for the photos. They are beautiful and I find myself being educated by you. Thank you.
I have a suggestion for the site. Like myself above, many people refer to pictures by number. When I read the comments - which I love (even if there is much aggression; guys chill out, we're all the same underneath our clothes) - I often find myself scrolling up and down to see which photo is being discussed. Can something be done to make this easier? Please.

Long may The Big Picture continue. Peace and love for 2009.

every selection ever made is generated from a bias. if we agree with the bias then we usually don't see the bias, if we don't agree, then the bias is obvious.

bias doesn't mean good or bad. but we all have one.

I hope those who view these photos are wise enough to know that nothing should be taken at face value- it is foolish to say that commenting on the political agenda detracts from the photos. If you are closing yourself off to the message being fed to you, you are being manipulated just as much as those who watch only a certain news broadcast, who listen to only one side of the story. Think about it- the compiler of this article has a very obvious and one-sided personal viewpoint he is trying to convey, with pics such as the victorious Obama vs cowardice of Bush, and only injured Palestinians but none of the murdered Israeli children or missile ravaged towns in Israel. Hmmm....

Neither the left nor the right have an exclusive on the truth or being on the correct side of a topic so everyone get over themselves and enjoy the amazing photography for what it was. If the owner wants to have a slant left or right it's their right to do so. Make your own site with your own slant on things if you don't like this one.

Looking through the photos in the three parts of this absolutely phenomenal collection, I found that there were 3 photos regarding the Palestinians/Gaza Strip. all depicting casualties on the Palestinian side of the conflict.

Yet, not a single photo relating to the thousands and thousands of missiles, mortars and Katyusha rockets fired by the Palestinians in Gaza at Israeli civilian targets (or the results).

I believe some balance is called for.

The photographer has brought out the best and worst in humanity, without bias as to which side he belongs. The fact that some in this part accuse him of sympathising with the Palestinians, while others in the previous part glorify him for supporting US and Israel attest to this fact.

I'm sorry, but I don't think these photos are an accurate representation of 2008. Some of the photos were, indeed, excellent; some merely interesting;some sad and moving; some WAY too political (mostly leaning left). I think the presentation could have been more balanced. Surely the author could have found some good things that happened this past year. #236, if you see no bias in these selections it simply shows where your bias lies. #254, if you think there is no God you have my sympathy. One day you will know how wrong you are. I pray it will be before you leave this world. May He bless us all in the coming year. "Even so, Lord Jesus, come."

I tend to think there is no god, but if there is one, he must either be on long vacation (probably disgusted by his own creation) or either be quite different than the ones many people believe in... I wish believers of all kind were more tolerant or were to show more restraint. Does one ever hear of a guy signing 'proud atheist' for instance, as opposed to #240!
Mostly great pictures, others have limited interest or a sense of 'déjà-vu'.
Don't forget the photographer's eye or skill in these events.

Sadly, too soon to close the year. Just missing a pair of pictures from Gaza these days.

Anyway: Dont like the black warnings over some of the pictures. This world is the way it is, and everyody must see witout warning, Becase life don't makes warnings.

These blacked photos are where the "be the best" way of thinking leads us. To be the best one must be better than others, and no one is. If you teach your sons to try and be better than others they 'll end thinking that they are, and then others will be expendable.

Just a thought.

Amazing Pictures and even more amazing comments. As I read through them , I can't help but see how we view the world with our own mental filters, attaching our own judgements and expectations. Seeing political agendas and deficiencies tells me volumes about our humanity. This collection will always disappoint somebody; it is mathematically inevitable. It 's a year in review, yet there are less than 365 photos, so each photo represents about 3 days of time from our vast and complex world.
As for me, I love this collection and this blog. I will enjoy the photos that mean something to me. Really incredible photography, no matter what the agenda is. Thank you

As far as blood lust american soldiers, that ispossibly the stupidest thing i've ever heard of! @KJ:

Bloodlust of the American soldiers? In a land we shouldn't be in? Did you even read the caption? They're dropping into Afghanistan to defend a US outpost that was being attacked by Afghan troops. Afghanistan had a hand in the 911 attacks, that's not an unnecessary bloodlust on our part. What would you suggest we do?

For God's sake, people. Pacifism is not the answer. It doesn't work, we're all fallen people. How would we defend ourselves against another Hitler without fighting back?

Buenas fotos.

Good snaps ..but seems that lots of bad incidents happen in this year (2008) Hope this year 2009 we can get good life n enjoyment..... Peoples are fighting each other n making life like a hell for other peoples. This is time to stand n fight with terrorism...& against those countries who are supporting the same like Pakistan, Syria, Iran,Bangladesh...Etc... Why not other developed countries are not stopping this n not forming the democracy ?????

For Ben #245: There is most definitely a God, and I'm sure He is very disappointed in where we all are right now, but be assured He will not allow this to go on forever. He promises that if you seek Him you will find Him. I pray you will begin seeking.
For Jennifer #249: Call it brainwashing if you will, but it is true whether you choose to believe it or not. My prayer for you is that something or someone will come into your life that will allow your eyes to be opened.

well, this is a picture of what life is about on Earth. What a shame. Again, everybody to realize that all the hope, pain, happiness, desappointment, starvation, wars, as well as the best and the worst that human beings are about happens on a small planet, 6400 km diameter, lost in the univers... Are we free ? no, stuck on this rock... how come cannot we live together and look forward all together to make our dreams real ? Is it so difficult ?

These amazing photos give us insite to what is happening everyday that we would otherwise be blind to. Let us learn from them and grow so that in 2009 we will see more love in the world and less devastation. So many feel so free to be burdened by being human... we must learn from the mistakes we make and not judge others becuase they do not agree with our beliefs. Enjoy these gorgeous photos and take from the experience of viewing them what you will. Allow us all to do the same without criticism. God Bless. Peace, love and health in 2009

Aron Safran said, "Yet, not a single photo relating to the thousands and thousands of missiles, mortars and Katyusha rockets fired by the Palestinians in Gaza at Israeli civilian targets (or the results). I believe some balance is called for."

Aron, for me, pictures of dying Palestinians are mirror images of dying Israelis a few miles over the border from this useless hate and violence.
Pain is international.

34 of the pictures have something to do with the US government and US government policies. The Boston Globe was slanted in it's coverage of the U.S. primaries and general elections, only providing coverage for it's picks.
Now, the inclusion of boring pictures of these stupid politicians alongside these world class photos just confirms the Globe's predjudices.

I'm surprised that this was frequented so much in in media worldwide. That the press just thought it was a spontaneous action from a enthusiastic wakeboarder.
The logos he's covered in reveals something else. I wouldn't be surprised if the head of PR from Red Bull in Europe is holding the other end of the rope laughing as he pulls the dutch wakeboarder across the water and the global media.

It doesn't fit in this collection of real events from the past year.

Picture of two dead and broken bodies are awful to watch; but we should remember that these were the bodies of two TERRORISTS trying to kill civilians!
I don't want to see the loss of ANY innocent persons no matter who they are; but anyone in this world who kills others for their own ideology should NOT expect others to sit and watch. We should not tolerate bullies anywhere!

Extraordinaire qualité d'image !!

Très belles images qui ne sont que le reflet de notre monde et de ce qui le compose de bien ou de mal, de beau ou de laid, de haine ou d'espoir, au travers de tous les êtres qui le peuple, donc nous.....

Extraordinary quality of image!!

Very beautiful images which are only the reflection of our world and what composes it of the good or the evil, the beautiful or the ugly, of hatred or hope, through all the beings which populates it, thus we.....

Thanks for sharing! They are really great photos but it does sadden me to think of all the violence occurring in our world. Unfortunately I believe the violence is about power and greed primarily, though those in power and getting richer by the second are not who we see on the front lines nor are they dying. The wealth in this world is infinite and no one should be homeless or hungry or sad.

to the picture nr 16. i been a couple times in visegrad, but i never been in bosnia. the picture may be was made in bosnia, but the town isn´t visegrad.
the original town is in hungary in the danubian bow and was a king residence in the XIII. century. you can still visit the ruins of the palast and the castle

For the 430 - there are two towns named Visegrad, in Bosnia and Hungary. The photo was taken in Bosnia as stated below the picture (Diving competition from the famous Visegrad bridge, July 2008). The famous Visegrad bridge - a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture, the bridge of twelve arches, 170 metres in length and over 6 metres wide, was built in 1571 by Kodža Mimar, has inspired the Nobel Prize-winning Bosnian author Ivo Andriæ to write famous novel “The Bridge over the Drina”. Apart from its historical, documentary, symbolic and ontological value, it is also of incalculable architectural and aesthetic significance.

Get the political ones OUT of the mix. The rest are so moving, spectacular, etc. The last thing to add is these thieves, present and past, to clutter up an otherwise perfect slide show.
