World Animal Day
World Animal Day was observed earlier this month - on October 4th. Started in Florence Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists, World Animal Day has since expanded its focus from its original intent, which was to bring attention to endangered or threatened species. The day is now set aside as a time to reflect on all of the animals we share this world with, and our involvement with them - and to spur action to commemorate that respectful relationship. Half the world's mammals are declining in population and more than a third are probably threatened with extinction, according to an update of of the Red List (an inventory of biodiversity issued by the IUCN), released on October 6, 2008. Below is a collection of recent photos of animals around the world - Happy (belated) World Animal Day. (38 photos total)

Green Sea Turtles in the waters of Bora Bora, Tahiti are seen in this undated photograph from an exhibit titled "Irreplaceable: Wildlife in a Warming World," recently shown at the Peerless building in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The exhibit showcased animals most threatened by global warming, such as green sea turtles. The gender of sea turtle eggs are determined by temperature, which means global warming would upset the natural gender balance. (Michele Westmorland)

#11+#22 wolffishes and warthogs are ugly buggers
@Dick Cheney (11): Considering the work of Manfred Delpho it wasn't luck, but rather hard work, good preparation and patience.
How come no picture of
Dennis' the manatee's
rotting carcass in the back
of the ryder truck?
Dead manatees are people too.
Amazing !!!!! I like pic 4 and 6 so much ...thanks
Awesome pics, as usual. Just a heads up, though: on picture 38, where it reads "[...]it is a fairly common site to see the unemployed and homeless animals[...]", it should read "[...]it is a fairly common sight...". Keep up the great work.
It's disheartening to think that so many of these beautiful creatures can only be found in zoos now. The fine balance of earth's diversity should be respected and protected.
Oh, when I view these photos I think of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) being dismantled by the Bush Administration. To help save these creatures, please visit my website at: http://oeacares.blogspot.com/ You can also take a Poll on your feelings toward the ESA. I'd enjoy your opinion on this issue. Robert61

For those of you who liked the Narwhal photo, you can see more of Paul Nicklen's work at www.paulnicklen.com. He's got an amazing gallery of Leopard Seal photos!

This is the best blog ever in the history of all blogs. But better.
Without words!!!!!!!! Incredible!!!!!!!!!!
These pictures are really great work! I liked them all but I was surprised when I read what is written under #28. I'm from Bulgaria and I'm grateful that my country is mentioned in such important topic. I hope people find a solution for the animal problem.
No spiders? :(
beautiful. a pleasure and honor to view them. the cat is not ugly because it has no hair, it is part of it's genetics.
Beautiful.
I love the tigers in #23
D!
Stunning. Thank you... :)
Wow, awesome, I don't have words. One of the best post I`ve seen on this blog, thanks for the fantastic images
Impressive. Was thoroughly amused until the last photo #38 which made a poignant affect on me. We've talking Man and Habitat, Man and Culture, Man and the Environment,.... It's time we highlight Man and Animals as well.
last week one elephant was killed by a drunk driver in the street of Bangkok while begging for food at night. Several elephants were killed or badly injured and it will happen again if the authority could not find any solutions to protect these magnificant creatures.
Amazing, as always
some awesome photos here. I was just at the bronx zoo last week and I think i saw that flamingo!
I'm pretty surprised at how small some of these animals are, and the life and methodology of the people that document them.
any amateur or professional zoologists with a blog out there?
Great photos!
We have to watch over out planet!

Geniales!
Prelepe su fotografije.Deluju umirujuce dok ih gledas.
Perfect!!!
Sad that most are maintained in zoos... wild animals getting hard to find, or photographers are just lazy these days.
increible una mezcla entre lo impactante, lo tierno, lo lindo y el miedo
buenas fotos
Toooooooo many animals in captivity.
WOW!! That is absolutely AMAZING!!
Awesome pics .........
WONDERFUL!!! I`d like to see more so beautiful pictures instead of weapons or wars.
"Toooooooo many animals in captivity."
That's true, but as we've seen, some animals have been reintroduced into the world after a while of being captured and locked down for breeding. As many of those pics were taken in some Zoo or otherwise in captivity. Even tho those pictures were nice and very inspiring, I'd still like to see all those animals in the wild. What we've done already, destroyed quite a bunch of different species, should be reimbursed, in a way or another. We are still brining many species near extinction. We have done it for a long time.. But amazing pictures anyhow! Thanks!
The best animal pictures I have ever seen!! Awesome Gallery!!
Any kind of animal should have the right to be free, living in peace and freedom, not as slaves or captured in zoos. Great photographers, but some sad living beings, far away from their home-nature! It was called 'World Animal Day', not 'Pet-Day', 'Fishmarket-Day' or anything. I feel sorry for these pure creatures.
26... Dogs and America, two things i love
Wonderful pictures! How great is Nature! Thanks for bring it to us!

these pics are awsome i like the sea turteles
These pictures are cool. I like the sea turtles.
these are gorgeous photos. thanks for putting this up, it made my day. #38, especially, gave me a lot to think about.
Several photographs of bears, cats, a dog or two, but not a single pinniped, viverrid or mustelid that I could see. No seal, ferret, civet, otter, sea-lion, mongoose, kinkajou, fossa, badger, genet... just lions and tigers and bears, oh my! That's half the carnivora just missing. Not a good omen for a day to remember endangered species, is it?
@Peter da Silva: Note that the description of this entry says "a collection of recent photos of animals" - not "All animals", nor "All endangered species". These blog entries are restricted by A) The number of photographs I have available to me for publication (on hand and clear legal rights), B) a general restriction on number of photos (for practicality), and D) an editorial process.
I love the sphinx cat pic....she is beautiful

Hey,
I am a student from England and am currently working on a GCSE Information computer technology project concerning Arctic animals. I would very much appreciate permission to use your picture of narwhals. I would not use the image in any advertisements or websites for financial benefits but only once in a school project. I have been searching free images of Narwhals on the internet, yet all the ones I found have been vague and poor quality. This is the only one that I liked. Thanks

Estas fotos nos llena el espiritu , nuestra alma, y nos ayuda a ver este mundo de una forma diferente, y darle a Dios gracias por este gran regalo
Great pictues i loved them they helped me recognize whats society doing to them these animals, are in captivity but are at the moment are making more of their kind, so they can live alot longer now than they were going to. The animals are probably wanting to go home but are getting perfectly healthy again and safe. people should stop making them more endangered. People out there are still hunting out there when its illegal and wont stop. We need to stop them. Once you cut a tree plant a new one to save our animals
i love all of thouse pics!
