Riding the waves
Riding big waves or small, or riding the wind and catching some air, people across the world have been busy surfing over the past few months - in competitions, as therapy, or just for serious fun. Here, you'll find a collection of images of people recently enjoying the surf in several ways. (23 photos total)

In this handout photo provided by Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) and Covered Images, Andy Irons of the United States of America competes in round two during the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, part of the ASP World Tour at Supertubes on July 11, 2008 in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. cant get enough of the big picture!
Where'd the terrier end up? Did he win his heat? Thats the real story!
wonderful pictures, thanks.
Surfing dog! Surfing dog! Does whatever a surfing dog does!
Gives me a headache to look at those Hout Bay pictures.. because the water there is icy... even without wiping out into that weight of water..!
Hats off to them.
now I change wallpaper, again!!!11
There's no need to fear, Surferdog is here!
When criminals in this world appear,
And break the laws that they should fear,
And frighten all who see or hear,
The cry goes up both far and near for
Surferdog! Surferdog!
Speed of lightning, roar of thunder,
Fighting all who rob or plunder
Surferdog! Surferdog!
Picture #5... looks like he's at the edge of a very large frosted cake. Wicked cool.
The Big Picture has done it again. These photos take my breath away since the only surfing I do is on the internet. Love the Boston Terrier. Did he win any prizes?

Great shots, but what's with posting only one more shot of women surfers than dog surfers? Surely there were additional, equally-compelling shots of the ladies?
Great photos.
Does anyone know of any other sites that are similar to this one? Regular updates with high quality pictures like the ones typically found here?
it has only been three days since I've subscribed to this RSS feed but MAN-oh-MAN the pictures are FREAKIN' awesome !
one little remark though: too bad EXIF data is stripped (being an amateur photographer)
enjoy,
d.
@10 - these are shots from recent contests around the world. There is no women's heat at Dungeons (guess why?) and I don't believe there was a women's heat at J-Bay either. The contests with women's heats (U.S. Open and Roxy Jam) were represented in equal proportion to the men's.
Great collection as usual, A.T.
I love all the photos! Great shots..especially love the dog pic!
Malia Manuel is showing one of the best top turn cranks I've ever seen. She looks like she's kicking the sh*t out of that tail.
Goddamn China, can't even have a proper venue for windsurfing ruining everything.
surfline.com all sorts of surfing updates/news
estan al dope!!
photo #15 with the windsurgers and the chineses algae cleaners :
"Experts say the algae, which has clogged the coastline of the Olympic city, is a result of climate change and recent heavy rains in southern China, according to the Xinhua news agency."
Well, that's some bold lie ! The only cause of massive growth for green algae colonies is phosphate pollution, in other words, chinese Wastewaters directly rejected in the ocean without any sanitation.
"But don't wolly, we ale cleaning it, not oul fault ! global walming !"
haha the terrier! GO BU!
Is there no life jacket for the poor terrier? It looks like he's just in a harness.
Dude that is totlally SIC man. I love it.

Fantastic photos! These pictures really make you feel like you're out there with them!
SWEET!
Gnarly!
#12: I concur. It would be a amateurs heaven if exif-data was available:-)
COOL!!
those big waves will give me nightmares! all the respect in the world to the people willing to tackle that large freezing ocean.
love this blog!!
You're doing a great job with this blog. Love the photos.
First - This blog rules. Its nice to see some photos on the web as they were meant to be seen.
Second - EXIF data. It's meaningless. Seriously. Unless you happen to go to South Africa to shoot the same event under the same lighting conditions from the same angle then its not really going to help you. I think too many amateurs get hung up on numbers and cameras and gear. Just go make photos and learn what works and what doesn't work for you in your own shooting. Thats what matters.
Great pictures! I like this blog!

I'm in Beijing right now, and I was looking at maybe taking a train to Qingdao to go to the beach. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
I very like!
This is really cool. It makes freshness in my mind!!!!
Does the Globe have to insert something about Global Warming in every article it runs?.
hey beantown surfers! please join boston surfers where a bunch of surfers from around the city keep in touch...
send email/subscribe at: boston-surfers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
I wonder if it's the same dog who rides the skateboard?
Love the big picture so much!!!
Anthony Tashnick is a big wave surfer from Santa Cruz, Ca. He's won the Maverick's competition, so I'm thinking he right at home on these So Africa monsters
#19, Thomas Pereira: if you wanted to make a point about, say, untreated agricultural run-off into (global warming-linked) warmer coastal waters leading to algal blooms, don't you think that maybe a better way of doing so might have been to *not* have make use of a Mickey-Rooney-in-Breakfast-at-Tiffany's style racist characature? Your point is lost because you sound ignorant. You'd do better to look at the always pretty pictures that Boston.com provides and keep your mouth shut.
Boston.com, is there a way to have a "report this comment" button instated for offensive content such as Thomas's?
"I'd like to report an offensive comment "
Lord. Get over yourself. Life is too short to get your panties wadded over that. Take a deep breath, stop playing the victim, and try not to be so self-righteous
Amazing shots!!!
Thanks "The big picture"!!!

I am an old surfer chick that thought going to Hawaii was equivalant to Heaven. (at 19 yrs old) I have spent most of my adult life in alaska. Born and raised in So.Cal. and vacationing in Mexico most of my life. I can say I love surfing in Mexico and calif. But I don't want to hear anyone bitching about beaches....... Why do you think I left??
Now I live in NW Montana. own a bar on a river....the river yaak..come visit. no fear. no people here. 350 max in a million acres.
It's a mans world, one woman on one wave, the rest of the photos are great, is this your way of including the other 51% of the population,
It's a mans world, one woman on one pissy wave, the rest of the photos are great, is this your way of including the other 51% of the population, I want to visit Sheila M. Female surfers and all other sporting chicks are forced to wear 'sexy' clothing to make the sport more watchable, and all we get for the effort is a cute photo. Do you understand what waxing is?
Hot babes on big waves next time. Thankyou
I LIKE THE BIG PICTURE,ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
