Beyond The Big Dig
About this project

What happens to the ribbon of land being created by the depression of the Central Artery may be the most important development decision to face Boston in a generation.

Parcel 16 map

Parcel 16

Area: 39,224 square feet (0.90 acres)

Bordered by: Atlantic Avenue, Surface Artery, Milk Street, East India Row. Adjacent to Boston Harbor Garage.

Master plan calls for: Visitor-oriented civic plaza with sculpture or arts garden

Other plans: The Artery Business Committee plan calls for art and special exhibitions space and sculpture garden. Also a skating rink in winter.

Zoning: Recreation Open Space Subdistrict. Open space, cultural, retail and restaurant uses are allowed.

Notes: Parcel 16 is unique because of its location in the cross-street system, and its proximity to the New England Aquarium and the Long Wharf maritime facilities. It will be one of the most heavily used parcels on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Because the roof of the underground Central Artery is close to the surface at this point, low planters may be required to provide the soil depth needed for trees.
